No HW because I am finished with my DO project.
Tue, May 20 CW- image of work completed in class

I put my drawers together with the help of Justin and I clamped them together at the beginning of class. It was done drying by the end of class so I just slotted them into the drawer slots in my desktop organizer. I believe I am now finished with my desktop organizer.

Tue, May 20 HW – image of completed homework
No HW because I have to assemble in class.
Week 9
Fri, May 16 CW- image of work completed in class

In class, I cut out my drawer and stained both sides, and also put together the rest of the Desktop Organizer with clamps and glue.

Fri, May 16 HW – image of completed homework

As I still have to cut my drawers, I just arranged them on an art board, figuring out that I need a 20.5×18 in piece of wood.
Wed, May 14 CW- image of work completed in class

In class, I stained the other side of my wood, which is left to dry. In addition, I also attempted to 3D print an AirPods holder that would attach to one of the levels, but the 3D printer would not cooperate.
Wed, May 14 HW – image of completed homework
No HW, as I finished everything I have outside of class. Next, I have to go and stain the other side of the wood, 3D print the airpods holder, make the drawers, and assemble everything.
Mon, May 12 CW- image of work completed in class

In class, I cut out the bottom and below is the dry assembled desktop organizer. Then, I sanded and stained the wood, so I could get rid of some imperfections and make the etchings pop more.

Mon, May 12 HW – image of completed homework
No HW, as I finished everything I have out of class. I just have to go and cut the bottom now.
Week 8
Thu, May 8 CW- image of work completed in class

In class, I cut out the rest of the pieces I needed to cut out, but I forgot to cut out the bottom, so now I am going to need another piece of wood to cut the bottom at some point.
Thu, May 8 HW – image of completed homework
No HW, as I finished all of my etchings in Adobe Illustrator already. I just have to cut my parts and assemble.
Tue, May 6 CW- image of work completed in class

In class, I started the etching for the side pieces of my desktop organizer.
Tue, May 6 HW – image of completed homework
I didn’t do much for homework, as I finished all of the designs. I did try to create a vector image using chatGPT, but it didn’t turn out well, and when I continued to try to modify it, I ran out of chats for chatGPT.

Week 7
Fri, May 2 CW- image of work completed in class

In class, I etched what I did for homework, adjusted it one more time, and then cut it out again. I think it looks pretty good, so I will etch it out on my actual project. Then, I made a layout for all my parts so I know what sizes of wood I need.

Fri, May 2 HW – image of completed homework

For homework, I continued to work on the contrast to hope for a better image. I hope this works this time. Once I get this figured out, I will be done with my designs I think.
Wed, Apr 30 CW- image of work completed in class

In class, I was able to cut out my new image, which did not turn out well. I think I need to head in a new direction with this one and I will keep looking for new images. In addition, in class I began to get the parts for my desktop organizer together, so I could find out what pieces of wood I would need.
Wed, Apr 30 HW – image of completed homework

For homework, I didn’t have that much to do, but I continued to mess with the contrast of the image of Steph Curry, as the ones from last class did not come out as I wanted it to.
Mon, Apr 28 CW- image of work completed in class

In class, I attempted to cut out what I had made in class, but I came out poorly, so I used photoshop to edit the blacks and whites, increasing the contrasts. Next class, I will try to cut it out.

Mon, Apr 28 HW – image of completed homework

For homework, I continued work on the designs for the side. In addition, I re-exported the dxf sketches because it did not export properly when I cut out the thing out of cardboard.
Week 6
Thu, Apr 24 CW- image of work completed in class
In class, I cut out all the parts out of cardboard and put them together. Everything works as I planned and I think I am ready to cut out of wood soon.

Thu, Apr 24 HW – image of completed homework

For homework, I removed the side joinery so I could add designs without having to worry about running into the joinery. Each of the platforms that used to connect to the sides are still connected to two separate sides, meaning they will still be secure. After, I continued to work on a composition, and I believe I have the right side done.

Tue, Apr 22 CW- image of work completed in class

In class, I finished both of my designs on either side. I got my design approved and was waiting for my opportunity to start cutting, but I never got the chance, as someone else was cutting already. Next class, I will start cutting.

Tue, Apr 22 HW – image of completed homework

For homework, I did not do a lot, but I spent I quite a bit of time researching how to use adobe illustrator more effectively. In class, I need to remove the backgrounds of the images so that they can etch properly. The videos I watched are linked below.

Week 5
Thu,, Apr 17 CW- image of work completed in class

In class, I photoshopped the image I imported to get rid of the background. Then, I put it back into illustrator and made multiple layers to make this cool basketball scene to etch into the background.

Thu, Apr 17 HW – image of completed homework

For homework, I continued to work on designs for the desktop organizer. I couldn’t figure out a way to get around or use the joinery for the sides, but I spent a while finding a picture and putting it so that it avoids the joinery. I think this is the last spot I will put a design, as the other spots would either be not visible or have too much joinery.
Tue, Apr 15 CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class we learned how to use Adobe Illustrator and I started trying to input some designs onto the sides of my desktop organizer. I don’t really know what I’ll do about the joinery yet, but I’ll try to figure it out.

Tue, Apr 15 HW – image of completed homework

I wrote the text as the starting for the decoration of Nemo’s Desktop Organizer. I also put one of the drawers in and another as a sample on the side. I will need help creating the designs for the rest of the organizer, however, such as the Warriors logo on the side.
Week 4
Fri, Apr 11 CW- image of work completed in class

In class, I finished the rest of the joinery to the back, so all divider components have three sides of joinery, keeping it very secure. After, I modeled the drawers that will go in the open spaces on the right middle and right bottom. Then, I added the knob, which I will decorate like a basketball.

Fri, Apr 11 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I continued to make progress on my desktop organizer for Nemo. I made all of the platforms and the AirPods holder on the top, which will house the AirPods and a phone. Next class, I need to finish the joinery between the platforms and the back, make the drawers, and start making the drawings on adobe illustrator.

Wed, Apr 9 CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class I installed Adobe Illustrator onto my computer to use for decorations and drawings in the future. In addition, I made some progress on the desktop organizer itself, constructing the back and the bottom.

Wed, Apr 9 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I started by trying to make numbers for the 30 on the left side of the design. I spent quite a bit trying to get the three to look up to my standard. This is the best I was able to do, so I think I will have to figure out a solution later. I left the sketch where it was and extruded everything else, so I think I will just go back to it later after the desktop organizer itself is finished. After struggling on the number for a while, I moved on to the actual design, where I copied it, then moved it to create the right side. I didn’t get nearly as much done as I would have liked to, but I will continue to work on this during class tomorrow.

Mon, Apr 7 CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class I took measurements down for as much of the desktop organizer design as I could. Then, with those measurements, I started working on the CAD model for desktop organizer. I started with the sketch for the left size, and did a decent amount of it. To finish the side, I need to make the number 30 on the top.

Mon, Apr 7 HW – image of completed homework
Today for homework, I worked on creating more potential designs for my desktop organizer. These all have functionalities, and I spent around ten minutes on each one. Coming up with new designs was very difficult, as I feel like the one I made first is perfect for everything I need in a desktop organizer.

Week 3
Thu, Apr 3 CW- image of work completed in class
Today in class I started working on sketches of my design for the desktop organizer. I was a late to class, so I only had an hour, but I also spent a lot of time thinking of the best way I could incorporate both the design and function that my person wanted. This is what I came up with for now, but I also need to come up with three more designs.

Thu, Apr 3 HW – image of completed homework
Actionable Problem Statement
The person I am designing this organizer for said he has problems with not being able to find his stationary and always having loose paper on his desk. With that in mind, I would like to incorporate a shelf on the organizer for him to be able to put any loose papers. In addition, I would like to have shelves and holders for his AirPods and calculator. He also said he likes having snacks on him, particularly small tubs of gum and other candy. So, I will a shelf that will allow him to easily access those too. Furthermore, as he is a big Warriors fan, and of Steph Curry, I would like to make the organizer blue and gold, with a big number 30 somewhere on it.
- How do you feel about the organization of your room?
5/10, thinks it is messy, does not have a lot of space for his snacks and stationary is always messy.
- How do you think the organization could be made better?
He wants a place to store his class materials and snacks.
- What specific issues do you currently have with the organization of your room?
His room is messy, as his loose papers and class materials are strewn all over the place.
- For each item, how much do you use it?
Snacks, pretty much eat them everyday and obviously stationary needs to be used every day.
- How many of each item do you have? (pencils, pens, stationary)
10-15 pens and pencils
- Where do you usually put these items instead?
Scattered around on the table, sometimes he loses his pens.
- How much do you think extra organization would improve your workflow?
It will help me not have to spend time looking for items and instead seamlessly transition from one activity to the next.
- Any question from you about what I’m trying to do?
No, but I would like it to be blue and yellow, GSW themed.
Tue, Apr 1 CW- image of work completed in class
Today in class, as I had finished the phone stand last class, I started making a list of questions for making my desktop organizer. I am making this for one of the people in my dorm, and I made the list of questions below to ask them to help facilitate my discussion with them. I made sure these were all open ended questions to allow them to provide me with deeper answers, which will assist my making of this desktop organizer. This is the define step in the “design thinking process,” as with these questions I will be able to understand the problem better then move on to the next step to come up with as best of a solution as possible.
- How do you feel about the organization of your room?
- How do you think the organization could be made better?
- What specific issues do you currently have with the organization of your room?
- For each item, how much do you use it?
- How should I make the aesthetics of the organizer to fit your style?
- Where do you usually put these items instead?
- How much do you think extra organization would improve your workflow?
- Any questions and/or special requests?
After answering these questions, I should be able to write an actionable problem statement, in which then I can move on to the ideate process, where I can actually brainstorming ideas and creating drawings.

No HW
Week 2
Sat, Mar 29 CW – image of work completed in class

Today in class, I added a revolute joint to allow the stand itself to rotate like it would if I actually made this. In addition, I put my actual phone model in to show how it would look. Last, I added colors to everything to make it look as realistic as possible.

Sat, Mar 29 HW – image of completed homework
Today for homework I finished the stand and made a base for the phone stand. After class, I was still trying to figure out how everything would hold together properly, but I think if I just have the legs attached to the base and nothing else, putting the phone stand in the middle should allow the ridges on the pin to hold everything in place. I could add a spring later too by just adjusting some of the measurements on the inside. However, the phone stand itself has an adjustable viewing angle and is complete!

Thur, Mar 27 CW – image of work completed in class
Today in class, I created a locking mechanism to prevent the pin from being removed. In addition, I added a handle to the pin for easy removal. I spent a lot of the class trying to figure out a way for the mechanism to actually spin around the pin. I started by putting part of the mechanism of the base on the side, but I still need to work on this.

Thur, Mar 27 HW – image of completed homework
I started with starting with figuring out how I was going to incorporate the pin mechanism into the design. When I was looking at other phone stands for inspiration, I realized that those all had their hinge mechanisms at the top or the bottom, as they are collapsible. I am going for a more stable desktop phone stand, and I tried to figure out a solution. The best I could come up with was a little block in the back for the hole to bore into. In addition, I also had to figure out whether I wanted to put the extruded notches on the pin itself or if I wanted to put it inside the bored hole. I decided to put the extruded part on the pin itself, so that way, it is easier to see how much to rotate and where to put the pin in. I will obviously continue to think of better ways, but for now, I think this is the best.

Tue, Mar 25 CW- image of work completed in class

I started to work on my phone stand, which I decided to make the pin hinge. During class, I was able to complete the portion of the phone stand where the phone will actually be placed on.
During consult and at the beginning of class, I finished the model of my phone design, finishing the card holder and placing the decal of my lock screen where the screen of my phone is supposed to be.

Tue, Mar 25 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I drew a more detailed sketch for the phone holder I decided on, which is one with a pin with indents, so when inserted into the hole, it can spin and lock to adjust the viewing angle. In addition, I added in some potential dimensions. I only know the dimensions for the area the phone will be. I don’t really know what the dimensions will be for the rest of the phone stand yet.

Week 1
Sat, Mar 22 CW- image of work completed in class

I need to make a phone stand for myself with an adjustable viewing angle.
Today in class I was working on coming up with designs for my phone stand. My original idea was a hinge with a pin, but I also came up with friction hinge, butt hinge, and a ball and socket hinge. The one I will probably further develop is my hinge w/ pin, as I think it was my best idea and I already have an idea of how I will design it.
Thu, Mar 20 CW- image of work completed in class
Today in class, I continued to make the phone model in fusion. I struggled for a little while on the camera, but I got it eventually and also started on the card holder on the back of my phone.
