Matching Style Through Prompting
Throughout history, artists have used visual language to reflect their time, culture, and ideas. In this project, you will learn to recognize the defining features of major art movements and explore how artificial intelligence interprets those styles. By writing descriptive prompts for AI image generation tools, you will test whether machines can convincingly imitate the look and feel of human art.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this assignment, you should be able to:
- Identify key visual and conceptual traits of major art movements.
- Write precise and descriptive prompts that communicate those stylistic traits to an AI image generator.
- Compare AI-generated images with historical artworks and evaluate similarities and differences.
- Reflect on how AI interprets artistic style and what that reveals about both human creativity and machine learning.

Choose three art movements from the list below and research their defining characteristics.

Your Tasks:
- Select three art movements that interest you
- Research each movement’s historical context and visual characteristics. Do not use AI-generated secondary summaries (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, etc.) as sources.
- Write a paragraph (100–150 words) for each movement explaining:
- When and where the style emerged
- Key artists and influences
- Distinct visual characteristics (color, composition, lighting, brushwork, etc.)
- The main ideas or emotions the movement aimed to express
- Include one historical image for reference for each movement
Using Adobe Firefly write one well-crafted prompt for each art movement. Your goal is to generate an image that convincingly matches the chosen style.
Example Prompts:
Baroque: “A dramatic scene of an angel descending through clouds, painted in the chiaroscuro style of Caravaggio, oil on canvas, strong contrast of light and shadow.”
Cubism: “Still life with guitar and bottle, fragmented into geometric planes and muted earth tones, in the style of early 20th-century analytical Cubism.”
Your Tasks:
- For each of your three art movements, write a detailed descriptive prompt. Do not use AI-generated prompts (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, etc.).
- Include specific details about:
- Subject matter
- Visual style characteristics
- Color palette
- Composition techniques
- Medium (oil painting, watercolor, etc.)
- Specific artists or techniques if relevant
- Experiment with several versions of each prompt
- Save your three best final images
- Document your final prompt text for each image
Create side-by-side comparisons of your AI-generated images with historical examples and analyze the results.
Your Tasks:
- Create three side-by-side comparisons:
- Your AI-generated image on one side
- A historical artwork from that movement on the other side
- Label each pair clearly with the art movement name
- Write an analysis (150–200 words) for each comparison explaining:
- How well the AI captured the defining traits of the style
- Which specific visual elements are convincing
- Which elements are inaccurate or missing
- Any limitations or surprises in how the AI interpreted the prompt
- What this reveals about the art movement’s characteristics
