Final Project:

Week 10

Thu, May 22  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I finished staining my parts and then could not do anything else because I asked Mr. Brodie and the wood has to dry overnight. Next, I will assemble my drawers and the full model. I am very close to finishing. Staining was pretty fun and I also counted all my parts and compared it to my Fusion model and I had full inventory.

Thu, May 22  HW – image of completed homework

On Tuesday after class, I stayed for consult and continued sanding my parts. I did not take another picture because I kept working into consult and then just took a picture when I left. I was very locked in to my work and honestly lost track of time because I was being very productive. Then, on Thursday before class, I went into consult and finished sanding. After that, I began staining my parts.

Tue, May 20  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I noticed that some of my parts were missing, so I took inventory of what I had and then finished printing out of wood because one of my drawers and one other piece was not printed. Then, I sanded more than half of my parts and I will finish the rest later.

Tue, May 20  HW – image of completed homework

Today, I could not do anything for homework because all I need to do is print. I have not been able to print because everyone also needs to right now. I tried going in for consult but both printers were already taken, I believe from people staying from the class before. I also went in on Sunday, but by the time I got there, one of the printers stopped working and the other was being used. I did talk to Mr. Brodie and I will go in after school to print, but I could not do anything for homework today.

Week 9

Fri, May 16  CW- image of work completed in class

Today, there was really nothing I could do in class. Basically, Mr. Brodie cut out my wood pieces, but I did not get to print as people were engraving and took a long time. Since I could not do anything, I just worked on illustrator a bit by converting my images to greyscale and simplifying them to make sure they will print correctly. I also helped Isaac assemble his cardboard model a bit.

Fri, May 16  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I did not have much I could do as I gave my wood dimensions to Mr. Brodie last class. So instead, I spent some time cleaning up my Fusion model and making sure all of my extrusions and clean and complete. Then, I went to Adobe Illustrator and experimented with combining different images. In this image below, I got a couple different types of flowers and tried to put them together to make one image that I think looks good. In class, I hope to print.

Wed, May 14  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I put all of my sketches into illustrator and then find out the dimensions of the wood that I needed. I wrote this down on a paper for Mr. Brodie so I should be able to print next time. I then also copied the etchings that I previously made into the pieces that need them. Overall, it was a very productive class and I will soon be able to print and hopefully finish the project.

Wed, May 14  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I finished fixing up my drawers in Fusion and then resaved every dxf file. I then talked to Mr. Brodie about my next steps during consultation and he explained to me what I need to do. I will start putting my pieces into art boards in illustrator and then will start wood printing.

Mon, May 12  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I edited my drawer joints. I realized that basically all of them were messed up so I tried extruding further and then using the combine tool. I then reprinted my bottom drawer to see if this strategy would work and the drawer turned out perfect. I then used the same strategy on my other two drawers and hopefully fixed them. I will print on wood soon as I have to save the files and get the correct wood dimensions.

Mon, May 12  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I went to consult on Sunday and finished putting together my cardboard model of my desktop organizer. First, I had to put together my 3rd drawer which had an incorrect piece. Therefore, I had to make some edits in Fusion and then reprint. Then, I had to put together everything else and after a while, I realized that one of my sides was incorrect too. I then had to reprint this as well. Eventually, I finished my model and put my drawers in. Now, I am done with the cardboard model and will go to print on wood. I might have to edit some of my joinery to make it a bit more convenient but it is overall solid.

Week 8

Thu, May 8  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I was assembling my cardboard model. I put together the bottom right side and back first. Then, I started assembling two of my drawers. For one of them, I had to do a bit of cutting so I think I will have to edit the dimensions in Fusion. I should be able to finish assembling it soon as I have now gotten the hang of it.

Thu, May 8  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I went during consult and used the laser cutter. I was able to print out all the rest of my parts which was at least 15 components. In class, I will be able to finally assemble my organizer out of cardboard. I also worked on illustrator a bit and explored how to use different tools that I had not used before. For example, I experimented with the scallop tool to add texture and graphics. Overall, I got plenty done through consult and at home.

Tue, May 6  CW- image of work completed in class

*Was not in class because of early dismissal for lacrosse

Tue, May 6  HW – image of completed homework

Today, I simply worked more on Adobe Illustrator because I could not print my cardboard pieces. I tried a lot of different colors and tints to see what looked the best. Also, I used the smooth tool to create a more realistic look on the golf clubs which I believe turned out pretty well. I will not be in class so I hope to stop by in consultation and continue printing if I can.

Week 7

Fri, May 2  CW- image of work completed in class

In class, I did a couple of things. I continued printing parts for my cardboard model, but then realized that some of my dxf files were wrong because they did not have the joinery that I had just edited (I also had to add a bit more in class). Therefore, I wrote down all the parts that were correct and then resaved all the other parts again. I learned that it is important to be organized as if I didn’t try to rush so much the first time, figuring out which dxf files were wrong would have been easy. In class next time, I will be able to print again.

Fri, May 2  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I finished fixing my Fusion model. I created the missing joinery for two of my parts which was relatively easy, but I also had to create one new component. I duplicated a similar component and then used the extrude tool to change the dimensions. I then used the combine tool to create the joinery. Overall, I hope I can go back to printing now.

Wed, Apr 30  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I worked a bit in illustrator, but spent most of my time on Fusion. I noticed that there were a couple of parts without joints which is wrong. I had to create whole new sketches which was very time consuming. Also, I had to change several pieces when I changed each one. I still need to fix the joinery for two components (bottom 1 drawer and 32) and add one component in my top left drawer. I am happy that I caught these errors now, but it means that some of my printing might have been wrong. I will fix my model and then go back to printing on cardboard.

Wed, Apr 30  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, since I am currently printing on cardboard, all I could do was work on illustrator. I tried to use multiple AI images to create my desired design which proved more difficult than expected because I had to edit the specific features of each picture. In class, I will continue printing.

Mon, Apr 28  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I printed some of my parts on cardboard in the laser cutter. I did not finish printing because I have quite a lot of components, but I hope to make even more progress next class. I also had to edit my model a bit in Fusion because some joint were incorrect. I printed all the parts below:

Mon, Apr 28  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, since I could not print my model in cardboard, I started working on illustrator. It took a bit of time to figure out but I have come up with designs for my back and right side. I had to enter several different prompts into the ai generator and then change the colors as well. I also tried editing the picture that the ai gave me to make it more of my own. I hope to print in class or work more on this if the printer is occupied.

Week 6

Thu, Apr 24  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I finished my Fusion model. I created all the joinery for each of the three drawers which was very time-consuming and I had to change a couple of things because a couple of dimensions were off. Then, I created the joinery for my other side that I did not do. After that, I copied my left vertical to the right side and used the combine tool to create the joinery. This helped me create my bottom storage simply without wasting space. I believe I am now done with my Fusion model.

Thu, Apr 24  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I finished my last two drawers. I created the backs of both drawers and then created the sides of the left one. Then, I extruded the holes in the fronts. I also made sure to leave a bit of space for the offsets of the drawers so they could actually be functional. I believe I am basically done with my Fusion model, but I do think I am missing some joinery which I will add. It is nice to finally be done with the drawers.

Tue, Apr 22  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I basically finished my second drawer. I need to create the hole which I will do for homework. Once I create the last drawer, I need to make sure that I have created all my joinery because I believe I am missing some. After that, I will hopefully be able to go to illustrator.

Tue, Apr 22  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I finished my drawer by creating the hole and joinery. This actually proved difficult because a couple of the dimensions in the sketch were wrong so I had to go in and fix those. Then, I was trying to create the verticals for the other drawers but had trouble with the dimension tool. After probably 15 minutes of trying and scouring the internet, I realized it was because my lines were not fully extended. Once I did that, I was able to create those verticals. I hope to be done with the Fusion model in some time.

Week 5

Thu,, Apr 17  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I worked on my drawer. I created the sketch and then extruded the sides. I need to join the sides of the inside and then make a hole and one of my drawers will be completed. Making a drawer was much harder than I expected, but at least one of them is almost done.

Thu, Apr 17  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I created the joinery between my verticals and the top horizontal. I also created the joinery between my sides and the back wall. I believe most of my joinery so far is done. I had to spend a lot of time creating the joinery because I did not do it before when I was creating the pieces. I will try to do it as I create the pieces from now in. There is still more but I have done most of it.

Tue, Apr 15  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, we spent the majority of the time learning Adobe Illustrator. We will use this to etch drawings into the wood for a better look. After, I created more joinery in Fusion. I created joinery for one of the sides, corrected one set of joinery for my drawer, and started the joinery for my right vertical and bottom.

Tue, Apr 15  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I created the joinery for my bottom left drawer. This took a while because I had to figure out an efficient way to create the joinery. Now that I have figured out an easy and repeatable way, creating the rest of the joinery should be easier. I also had trouble with downloading Adobe Illustrator because it is taking a long time to download. It has been downloading for about 5 hours and is still not done. I tried to research the issue but nothing online had any information. Soon, I hope to finish my 1st drawer.

Week 4

Fri, Apr 11  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I spent a lot of time editing my sketch because I had the wrong wood thickness. I had to change basically all the dimensions. Then, I created one set of joinery between my right side and bottom. Last, I started creating my 1st drawer. I hope to create more joints between my components and make progress on my 1st drawer.

Fri, Apr 11  HW – image of completed homework

For homework, I created my left side, left vertical, back, bottom, and bottom left storage. I had to edit the sketch more to get the wood thickness for each piece and then extruded it out. During class, I was forgetting that I had to account for the wood thickness, but after realizing that, modeling is easier now because it makes more sense. I hope to make my drawers soon.

Wed, Apr 9  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I created my front elevation sketch and started extruding the sides. It was difficult but I think I will be able to make more progress for homework. I am also attaching an inspiration picture for my organizer under the progress picture for today.

Wed, Apr 9  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I did a couple of things. First, I finished my 4th concept sketch (bottom picture) and finished the ideate step of the design thinking process. I then talked to my client and showed him all the designs. I asked him which he liked the most and why. He ended up saying this specific design because it will have a lot of holding capacity and looks simple yet complex. Then, I sketched the design more in detail with dimensions. I hope to start and make progress on my Fusion model in class.

Mon, Apr 7  CW- image of work completed in class

Actionable Problem Statement: The main issue that my client has is that his desk gets easily disorganized and cluttered. Since he has lots of empty space on his desk, I am going to make a large desktop organizer that can keep all his general study materials. This easily accessible storage will make it much easier to stay tidy. I will create 3 drawers as well for different types of materials because he wants to keep things separate. The drawers are the biggest constraints of this project because they need to be a solid size so he can actually keep things. I will also put his interests on the organizer such as the New York Giants, Track, and throwing. These aesthetics will fit the vibe of his room because posters and objects in the room are similar. My client does not care that much about features like font or wood color but I will make sure it looks simple but elegant. I believe if it looks nice he will be more likely to use it and the problem will be solved. The more appealing it is, the more useful it will end up being.

Today in class, along with creating my problem statement, I created 3 of my 4 design sketches. For homework, I will create my last sketch, talk with my client and decide which one to pursue, and hopefully start a more detailed sketch of that one design.

Mon, Apr 7  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, as the syllabus said, I interviewed my housemate about current issues with his desk, why he needs a desktop organizer, and specific wants/needs about the organizer. I got a general sense of his hobbies and what he wants it to look like, as well as the size because he has a lot of space. His problem is that things get cluttered so the solution is pretty simple – containers for him to store different types of study materials in. I summarized his general needs, but in class, I will define the constraints and create an actionable problem statement.

Week 3

Thu, Apr 3  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I started my desktop organizer project. The first step was to create my interview questions for my client. This will help me understand what they want. I then wrote how this interview is important to the design thinking process. For homework, I will discuss with them what they want and create an actionable problem statement. I also continued with my Fusion phone model. I finished up the buttons on the sides and bottom because I added all the details. I used the filet tool to add the curves and used circles to add details on the bottom holes. The rectangular pattern tool was very helpful. I also created my phone case using the offset tool.

Thu, Apr 3  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I continued my phone model in Fusion. I created the buttons on both sides of the phone and the bottom. Although it was generally simple, this took time as my sketches had to be very precise and I had to use the dimension tool a lot.

Tue, Apr 1  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I finished my phone stand in Fusion. Making all the adjustments actually took some time. First, I had to change the sketch and extruding of the base so the leg could actually fold in. Then, I found out there was a gap in my actual phone holder so I had to fix that using the extrude tool by creating a whole new component. Last, I made a simple and clean butt joint connecting the holder to the leg. Next, I will continue with my actual phone model.

Tue, Apr 1  HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I was able to create my second hinge. It took less time since I already created one hinge last time in class and was able to mimic what I did for that. I also jointed my actual phone stand to the leg. I think I am done with the project but I might make some final adjustments during class. To create the hinge, I just made a sketch with circles, extruded them, and then combined and cut them. To finish, I made a revolute joint.

Week 2

Sat, Mar 29  CW – image of work completed in class

Today in class, I finished the hinge between my base and the first leg. I used a video as a model which was very helpful. Next, I will do the same thing with the other leg. It should be quicker now that I learned how to make a hinge.

Sat, Mar 29 HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I wanted to start my hinge joint which I was able to do but figuring out how to make it took a lot longer than I expected. I was confused because with the LED lamp I did not fully understand what a joint was, but since there were clear instructions, it was easy. I ended up having to do a lot of research about hinge joints so I could find a type of joint that would work for my model. To be honest, this took me probably around 20-30 minutes since I had to watch some very long videos to understand what joints actually are. I also did research about types of joints such as butt joints and continuous hinges. Then, I decided to create my joint using cylinders and a rod in the middle which the cylinders can rotate around. Last, I created my sketch for the cylinder parts of my joint on Fusion and then extruded one of them. After that, I used the rectangular pattern tool to create the other 2. I will continue with making this hinge because I think that after I figure out how to make one, the second one will be a lot easier.

Thur, Mar 27 CW – image of work completed in class

Today in class, I created the different parts of my phone stand on Fusion. Although I created all the parts, I now have to figure out how to create hinge joints and in general put the components together. It was a bit difficult creating the components without a video because they are not as simple as the pencil box challenge. In the second half of class, I was watching a video on how to create hinge joints, but it is still a but unclear. I hope to make some more progress for homework.

Thur, Mar 27 HW – image of completed homework

Today for homework, I made my simple phone model which was easy but actually took some time because I left my orthographic phone sketch in the classroom. For this reason, I had to take all the measurements again with a tape measure at home. On the bright side, I will be able to confirm my measurements in class today and make sure they are accurate. Then, I started planning out the actual dimensions of each part of my phone stand as you have to do that before modeling in Fusion. I hope to make good progress in finishing my planning and doing work on Fusion today in class. In the future, I will start taking my sketches home as if I leave them in the classroom, it is harder to do work at home. I made that mistake today but still tried to do what I could.

Tue, Mar 25  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I was deciding which sketch to go more in-depth with, but then decided to mesh two ideas together. Now, I am creating a stand with two joints that can fold in so it will be flat and easy to carry. For homework, I hope to make my simple phone model so I can finish my phone stand sketch and start modeling that soon.

Tue, Mar 25  HW – image of completed homework

I was able to finish my last two designs for homework. I had some issues uploading on WordPress I am not sure why if it was the computer or WordPress but it eventually worked. Next, I will decide which design I want to use and then hopefully start modeling in Fusion if it is working now.

Week 1

Sat, Mar 22  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I wrote my problem statement for the phone stand and then drew two whole ideas (without measurements). For me, sketching the idea was more difficult than coming up with an idea, but I was able to do it by taking some time and being patient. I will continue with creating the next two sketches in homework and/or class.

Problem Statement: My phone stand needs to be able to change viewing angle, should be able to accommodate my specific phone, and should be constructed with realistic materials. It should also not be too bulky as easy transport is a necessity. This stand will help with convenience as I will have two free hands even if I need to see something on my phone. Also, it will help improve my posture as I will not look directly down as much.

Thu, Mar 20  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I finished my orthographic sketch. Then, I tried to start my model on Fusion but Fusion was not working today. Instead, I completed the homework which was reading about design thinking. I then took a quiz and got 100% (given that some of the “correct” answers on the form were wrong). Hopefully next class Fusion will be working and I will be able to start my model.
