Week 8
Thu, May 8 CW- image of work completed in class
In class, I got the wood boards for printing and then printed out the back, front ledge, and other pieces on the lazer cutter.

Thu, May 8 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I finished laying out my sketched onto 6 different boards:
Board 1: 15in x 13in
Board 2: 15in x 15in
Board 3: 14in x 14in
Board 4: 19.5in x 14in
Board 5: 17.5in x 17in
Board 6: 17.5in x 15.5in

In addition: I finished the right side as well. Now I’m all ready for printing 😀

Tue, May 6 CW- image of work completed in class
In class, I imported all my files into Adobe illustrator and put them all into one file. I also added some dfxes of the side that I didn’t cut out in the cardboard sketch. (I documented this while doing homework so I do not have a before picture of all my sketches on one file because I forgot to screenshot before I formatted everything.)

Tue, May 6 HW – image of completed homework
I took the mountains from another drawing that I found and I added it to my design. Then, I took this poem and added it onto my side with image trace, ungroup, and moving the characters.

Here is how it looks on the left side. I think it fills up a lot of the empty space and looks much better.

Here is the improve right side. I also did about the same thing with bringing in parts of another drawing.

Week 7
Fri, May 2 CW- image of work completed in class
In class, I succeeded in printing out the frames that I designed.

Fri, May 2 HW – image of completed homework
Here, I reformatted the drawing so that it looks a bit better but I still want to work on it a little since there seems to be oddly empty space in the design

Then I took this drawing and I reformatted it onto the left side of my design but I still need to add stuff as well

Wed, Apr 30 CW- image of work completed in class
For the entire class, I had been fixing my sketches as they kept burning when I printed them, so I don’t really have much to show 🙁
Wed, Apr 30 HW – image of completed homework
With the completed 3D model, I started designing the sides, here are some examples of what I would like to put on the left and right side:

Since these leave a lot of space in the side, I wanted to add some words onto the side to make it seem cooler, like how there is words next to the bamboo. Here is some that I might use after fixing them on procreate or tracing them on adobe illustrator:

Here is my design right now, i need to fix it later.

Mon, Apr 28 CW- image of work completed in class
For the design on the little panel, I chose to sketch and extrude one of the more rectangular designs that I found yesterday night. This is the design and heres how it looks on my Desktop organizer. I think it looks pretty on theme and I think that next class I will print some prototypes on wood to make sure that the designs won’t break or snap.

I also cut the curve onto my cardboard model with scissors but not the pattern because it may catch on fire as cardboard.

Mon, Apr 28 HW – image of completed homework
I realized that my cartoonish style was a little bland so I decided to redo the design a little… Just a little…

I was inspired by the designs on these ancient Chinese doors. I really like their shape and how it blends together to form a really beautiful pattern. I thought that this would be perfect for the back of the desktop organizer as it is currently very bland and I had no idea what to put on it.
Here is my finished product. (this took a bit too long to make T-T)

So ofcourse, the stars would not suffice as they would now seem out of place. instead I decided to replace the stars with a branch of cherry blossom. I still want to stick to the 3D feel of the stars so I am going to spline it and then extrude it.

Here is the finished product extruded. I plan on projecting the image onto the shape to print out the details since it is also black and white. I used spline and had to reload it multiple times cause my fusion kept crashing due to the amount of points but at least the finished product is nice.

Ok so I really liked the hollowing in the back but I thought rectangles were too boring for the drawers, so I took inspiration from these historical Chinese styled windows and added their patterns onto the drawers of my desktop organizer. I really like the many geometric shapes it uses to from a coherent and organized feel.

Here is my finished product on the drawers, I might alter it a bit in class because I saw some prettier ones but for now this is what it looks like. Now I kind of want to extrude a pattern into the blank wall to its side but I’ll leave that for class as all this took me like 4 hours…

Here is some inspiration I might take for what to put on the side:

Week 6
Thu, Apr 24 CW- image of work completed in class
Today, I printed out the framework of my desktop organizer on cardboard. At first, the lazer cutter did not cut through so I increased the power of it but it still didn’t work even at p = 53 compared to p = 45. This is the front and top view of my organizer, I will maybe add the drawers and adjust the dxf as I noticed that some of my joints had missing connectors. This is also my readjusted design on the front left. Also, I notice that the design was inverted so I am going to try and figure out what exactly is happening.

Thu, Apr 24 HW – image of completed homework
I first created a sketch for every part of the desktop organizer that I would need to print out by creating a folder for all the sketches, projecting onto the slides, then naming them corresponding to the sides.

I wanted to put this teddy bear design on the cover of my desktop organizer as it is a thin strip of wooden board which would also be a perfect place to put the bear.

Tue, Apr 22 CW- image of work completed in class
I finally finished editing all the joinery in the desktop organizer! now I am preparing to add illustrations onto the desktop organizer. I also added a comportment at the top, added some more stars to the front, and added the top drawer. I was thinking about more cartoonish and stary designs instead of the original geometric shapes that I was going for because I really liked my star echtings at the front of the desktop organizer.

Tue, Apr 22 HW – image of completed homework
Today, for homeowrk, I fixed all the joints in my fusion model and added the drawers according to the dimensions you gave to us in class–1/16 for the top and 1/8 for the sides. I think that I would be ready to put designs on print during class today!

Week 5
Thu,, Apr 17 CW- image of work completed in class
Today, my computer unfortunately crashed and I lost a lot of progress on illustrator

Thu, Apr 17 HW – image of completed homework
For Homework, I finished adding in joints to my desktop organizer with the combine and cut tools. This definitely taught me to be sure to add in joints while sketching next time.

In addition, I worked some more on the back of the desktop organizer. Adding onto the theme from last time, I really wanted a cascade of diagonals resembling mirrors on the side like this, but the ai generative tool was not very corporative and kept on giving me geometric shapes. the prompt I gave it when it finally worked was “black and white singular mirror shard geometric”. Then I duplicated this single shard multiple times and arranged it to my liking. I think that I would like the diagonals be completely black so I may have to edit it in another way.

I wanted a design similar to this but falling downwards on the side. However, it kept on giving me shapes that resemble the center of the drawing on the back above.

Tue, Apr 15 CW- image of work completed in class
Today, we experimented on adobe illustrator with the ai generative tool. I wanted to do a geometric design so this was my first run on it on the back of my desktop organizer. I feel like the sides are a bit empty and I think I will add onto it for homework.

This is also another option for design as I really wanted to incoporate chinese qin hua ci into one of my designs but I think it doesn’t look very good and I will probably not go with this concept.

Tue, Apr 15 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I first decided that I was not going to hollow this out but extrude it so that it is out on the surface of the pencil holder so I extruded it. Then I continued working on the joints between parts of the Desktop organizer by making a sketch on everything and cutting, extrudding, then combining. I also figured out how to install Adobe illustrator by downloading it from the actual website instead of the package in the email they sent us.

Week 4
Fri, Apr 11 CW- image of work completed in class
To target the problem from last time, I started to add joints to everything in the desktop organizer so that it would be ready for printing. I started with the secret box because it was a box inside of a box and I thought that it would be the hardest to do (and I was right T-T). I really feel like I should just restart since so many things has gone wrong because I forgot measurements, joints, and also joined a lot of the body parts together.

Fri, Apr 11 HW – image of completed homework
For homeowork, I continued tracing out the star patterns that I found. However, I realized that I needed to improvise for some of them but I needed only the stars with two lines and not the completely hollow stars. In addition, I am struggling on making the spline lines straight because it is supposed to be bended. Also, this surprisingly took a lot of time.

Also, I realized there was a lot of space that I shouldn’t waste under the pencil thing so I plan to make this part of the desktop organizer a mini organizer for paper clips and small items.

Wed, Apr 9 CW- image of work completed in class
I realized that all my parts had been one body so I had to go back and fix everything because I need to add joints to the desktop organizer as it is just boards right now. In addition, I thought that it would look cool if I added star cutout to the front of the pencil holder so I added a Decal to trace over. I also finished the hidden compartment and it works pretty well as you can see

Wed, Apr 9 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I fixed the pencil holder part so that it won’t be too deep, then I added the back wall using a low of project and also finished the bottom of the secret compartment. I’m thinking that there should be a bit of space between the boards so that it is easier to take out so I gave it an offset of .5. However, I feel like this might not be enough space and also I hid the front board so I could see the inside better.

Mon, Apr 7 CW- image of work completed in class
I decided to abandon my rotatable secret compartment idea because I realized that I cannot create a curved edge for the drawer. Then, I saw this design and decided to incorporate this design into my desktop organizer as it is a hidden drawer beneath a drawer. I don’t really know whether or not I would incorporate the edge though because my drawer would not be one board but two connected boxes.

Then I started to create my fusion build of the desktop organizer. I quickly realized that I did not do the dimensions right as I didn’t consider the thickness when modeling out the dimensions. In addition, I feel like I might have to restart this sketch since the dimensions are really off and I also need to fix the drawer part since I hvae to figure out how that would work.

Mon, Apr 7 HW – image of completed homework
For Homework, I drew out the specific dimensions of the desktop organizer and the theoretical designs that I could etc onto the desktop organizer. I found a design of a teddy bear that I really liked because it was purely shadows but you could clearly tell the fact that it is a teddy bear. In addition, i think doodles like jelly fishes and line arts would be good to etch. In addition, I really liked the secret compartment design so I decided on this design. Now its all good for building on fusion!
In addition: I thought about how I would incorporate this into the desktop organizer by having a hollow part in the side, allowing it to rotate in and out of the desktop organizer so that there will be more space for storage even though it is not really hidden.

Week 3
Thu, Apr 3 CW- image of work completed in class
Problem Statement: I need to design a Desktop Organizer that is compact and can hold school materials, makeup products, and stationary that is also a bit minimalistic
In class, I designed four desktop organizers based on the interview questions with Yvonne Li. I designed it with utility and aesthetic in mind which I labeled. However, I’m not sure that some of these designes would be plausible as the spots for pencils/makeup products could be too small to design carefully. I also really liked the hidden drawer I designed because I think that it is a cool concept

Thu, Apr 3 HW – image of completed homework
For Homework, I will start designing questions to assist me in creating the perfect Desktop organizer catered towards a specific person’s needs. To make it as personalized as possible, I will need to know what use they would like from their desktop organizer–some may want it to organize makeup, stationary, jewelry, figurines, books, etc. Based on these I will ask what features they want it to include. For example, if they would like it to organize makeup, would they want it to contain a spin wheel, drawers, sections for each type of makeup, or small places that you can clip brushes to. I also need to know what kind of aesthetic they want the desktop organizer to be in order to make it more visually appealing to them.
Questions:
– Do you usually use desktop organizers? if not, why? and what items do you have laying around that makes your room messy in your opinion?
– What kind of things would you like to organize?
*what do you always loose, what do you have just lying around in your room?
– How would a desktop organizer improve the state of your room?
– what functions do you think that the desktop organizer should have to optimize utility
*ex) holes for cables to run through, drawers, spinable parts, shelfs, dividers, clips
– Do you want it to be small or big?
– What style do you want your desktop organizer to have?
*what color do you want it to be?
*What kind of aesthetic do you like?
* what shapes or form do you want the desktop organizer to take?
*is there any patterns/drawings you would like on it?
*is there a particular theme you would like your organizer to be?
– Describe the state of your room and/or items in your room
– if you have any desktop organizers, share how you use them and how they look
Answers (For Yvonne Li):
– Do you usually use desktop organizers? if not, why? and what items do you have laying around that makes your room messy in your opinion?
– Ans: I really love desktop organizers, I have a bunch for my makeup and pencils, but my room is always kind of messy because I have a lot of school materials lying around and no good place to put them.
-What kind of things would you like to organize?
-Probably my clothes because most of them are lying around and I don’t have a good system that keeps it well organized.
– How would a desktop organizer improve the state of your room?
– Because my dorm is relatively small, and I got a lot of items lying around, it looks messy. So like a desktop organizer would make my room less messy.
– What features do you want the desktop organizer to have?
– I want my organizer to have small compartments for pencils and pencil like products. And maybe a drawer to store the sticker packs I have but they are kinda big. I would also like dividers and places to put papers and notebooks.
-What style do you want it to be, what color?
-Well like my favorite color is red so like maybe red but I want it to be simple and minimalistic. I want them to be similar to these other desktop organizers I have
-is there any patterns/drawing you would like on it?
-yes, i like geometric patterns because it looks both clean and sophisticated which is just my vibe 😏
Tue, Apr 1 CW- image of work completed in class
I finally finished the ghost, I wanted it to be different from the ghost in the video so I gave it a winky face and also made it raise its arms like it is cheering, I also decided to model some pumpkins.

Here is my finished pumpkin, I felt that I am more comfortable with modeling forms after this which I am really happy about.
My pumpkin wasn’t really customized because I kind of ran out of time but I will definitely change the face for hw.

Tue, Apr 1 HW – image of completed homework
Today I first decided to work on forming the boy into a more humanoid form, but after multiple failures, I’ve decided to stick to a cartoonish theme and I recognize that the person looks like Baymax right now so I decided to stick to that theme.

If you look closely, you can see a small extruded figure next to the person, that is going to be one of many ghost lingering around the person. I got the inspiration from this video

For reference this is the step I am currently on, next step to work on in class is to maybe add more fun decorations and extend the arm of the ghost 🙂

Week 2
Sat, Mar 29 CW – image of work completed in class
After learning form some more, I modeled a basic draft of what my person would look like and how it would be like. However, I realized that the part that connects to the leg is a little weird and I can’t figure out how to fix it as of now.

As you can see, the side of the human looks relatively better now because of the rounded shape.

Sat, Mar 29 HW – image of completed homework
For Homework, I attempted to body a more human figure for the phone stand, However, it only partly worked as the spline function in edit sketch does not give a lot of room for a precise drawing.

As planned, I gave it a pillow and used the create sphere function to make a perfect sphere near the pillow. I then also realized that the neck needed to be elevated so I cut a small chunk away from the top half of the neck and filleted it. However, it is still too boxy in my opinion so I decided to try researching for examples on how others modeled humanoid figures in fusion.

So I went onto youtube and found that most times these things are done by bodies called forms. These forms allow you to make smooth items, specify the amount of faces, and allow you to modify each and every face. After I learned this, I went and started playing around with the forms trying to determine how to best model the human and this is what I have so far.

Thur, Mar 27 CW – image of work completed in class
I decided while doing the homework that I should redo the joint into an in-place join because I was struggling to make the old parts revolute around each other similarly. I first made both parts rectangular just to make the modeling of the hinge easier. I also realized that I had to either joint the body to the plate or to ground the body in order for the leg part to move. Now all thats left is making it look more humanoid instead of just two rectangular blocks, so I cut the legs and also gave it feet. For homework, I plan to research how to model a humanoid looking figure in fusion and incorporate it into the body as I don’t really know how I will make the body less rectangular right now.

Thur, Mar 27HW – image of completed homework
I tried to make an in-place hinge; However, the joint function would not let me joint it correctly so I realized that I had to remake it in class so that the second part is on top of the first.
However, I found that my original design was in accurate as the joint will not turn when the corners are not rounded enough.

In addition, I decided to change the hinge into a variation of a hinge similar to this one in the video because it seemed like I could modify it so that it would look like the legs are the smaller piece and the body is the bigger one. Also I have printed this already so I’m familiar with this hinge instead of the barrel hinge I saw online.

Tue, Mar 25 CW- image of work completed in class
I originally wanted to do a barrel hinge, however, I thought that it was too complicated so I decided to replace it with a simple cylinder hinge that I found. In addition, I added a pillow under the head of the guy holding up the phone so that its head would not look weird floating in the air. I decided to make the length of the upper body a little longer so that it

would look better and sacrificed the ability to make the stone stand up even straighter.

I edited the dimensions of the guy so that it would be easier to model. I decided that the legs can go off the base as it is rotating so that the base would not look unusually long. In addition, I also decided to ignore a little bit of anatomy and make the head a sphere that is 7/19 inch in diameter.
I started modeling the phone stand and I feel a little confused on where to start, but I decided to try and build the in-place joint first.

Tue, Mar 25 HW – image of completed homework
Homework and in-class work assignments not submitted on time will receive a grade of 0.
Week 1
Sat, Mar 22 CW- image of work completed in class
Problem Statement: many phone stands are plain and uncreative which is why we need to design a personalized phone stand incorporating hinges for mobility.
I chose a variety of hinges and also tried to incorporate elements from phone stands that I see my parents use, such as extendable arms and rotatable ball hinges for mobility. In addition, I thought that we could put illustrations on the phone stand to make it seem more fun which is why I chose the design of animals.

I thought that the bunny, which i saw on a previous design, could have a movable leg so that it could allow for more angles and seem like it was really kicking the phone. However, to prevent the phone from slipping at low angles, I also added a ledge at the end. The bear is is held onto the stick with a ball joint which would allow for rotation in any angle.
I also saw this design where the phone stand was held by a metal stick with fluid motion, and I thought that it resembled a snake so I decided to make the face of the phone stand a snake. I also saw this really cool design where a clay figure was laying down doing sit-ups and its legs supported the phone, so I modified it so that the legs are movable and the position is different to allow for a more stable support.

Thu, Mar 20 CW- image of work completed in class
Today, I colored my phone model into similar colors of my phone and also projected an image of my lock screen onto the phone model. I learned that to make color very light in fusion, you actually need to increase the luminance by a very high amount in order for it to not give off a beigeish tone, as seen with the color of the phone in contrast to that of the key card. I also learned that you cold color separate faces difference colors for a more realistic look.
In addition, in the process of coloring my phone through appearances, my fusion had crashed because the colors had not loaded correctly which was apparently a common occurrence.

As for the decal, I learned that you are able to stretch and cut the image and that it is projectable upon both objects and faces, which could also be used to project the Lawrenceville logo onto the card holder. If the image was sized wrong, then there will be weird shadows and I noticed that the back of the phone when I hid the case part of my phone, since it was divided into a rectangular body and a think offset for the case, the main body was glitching as the image was too big for the body.
