During the homework last night I had trouble constructing the bottle opener because of the lack of instruction. I tried my best to use the tools I learned how to use in the first exercise as well as during the lesson. But it was getting hard for me to keep track of the measurements as well as construction lines.

Bottle Opener #4
Bottle Opener #3

In the homework session, I managed to finally finish bottle openers #3 & #4. Initially I was confused because there were not any specific instructions therefore I had to combine the little experience I accumulated in class as well as some trial and error to finally figure out as to how I can draw the openers in the most efficient way possible with the correct measurements. I plan to work on the MAD Exercise #2 and although it may possess more complex parts, I anticipate it will be easier and less time consuming because of the specific step by step instructions and the video provided.

iPhone Orthographic Drawing

At first, the dimensions of the iPhone were not correct and it was hard for me to fix the dimensions without disrupting the other parts. But after using the class period and consulting my peers as to how they went about changing their dimensions, I can confidently say that my iPhone’s dimensions, camera sizing and volume buttons are close to the exact measurements. The only thing that wasn’t measured was the speaker holes and the charging port. Overall this process taught me how to adapt to challenges because I had to refrain from disrupting my previous work while correcting the measurements.

20/04/2021 – Rapid Prototyping Google Glass

Some things that I observed included that Tom always had the user experience prioritised in his mind when speaking and designing the product. When trying to keep the user experience in mind, he relies on this idea called “rapid prototyping” which is essentially a rule that states “doing is the best kind of thinking” and he shows the process and steps he took from transferring an idea he saw in an Tom Cruise movie to real life. Tom states that it is extremely to hard to envision what the product will come out to be and that is why when he tried out his whiteboard idea, he realised the social awkwardness of controlling things with his hands alongside other ergonomic problems that may not have been recognized if it wasn’t for the rapid prototyping. In the long run it would probably mean it saved the company large sums of money in prototyping and testing. Then Tom dives into this idea of “use materials that move at the speed of thought to maximize the rate of learning” which is a really interesting because often times we get limited by our resources. In Tom’s case, he wasted no time utilising materials that possessed the same amount of weight as the actual material and immediate it gave him an indication of whether the product was actually comfortable. The ideas of book learning vs expansive learning are then explored. I think the idea of expansive learning is extremely valuable because you are no longer dealing with questions you have answers to, but rather, you are trying to find the answers so that what you investigate can be implemented in book learning for generations to come.

Phone Stand #1

Today in class I made significant progress on my phone stand and I successfully transferred the shape of the phone stand and its different components on to the Fusion platform. After consulting with Mr. Brodie, he challenged me to make the movement in the phone stand to be functional and he suggested to do this with a hinge. Therefore for homework I plan to research and try and draw a hinge design on Fusion.

24/04/2021

After researching and understanding what a hinge can do and its purposes, I proceeded to attempt and make a hinge but after a while, it was extremely hard to visualise the specific measurements therefore I looked up a tutorial on youtube and I created a hinge for homework. I have yet to attached it because currently the hinge is on another design, so I am not entirely sure how I would transfer and put the hinge onto my phone stand.

29/04/2021 – Fourth Industrial Revolution

I learned that the fourth industrial revolution is supposed to bring together digital, physical, and biological systems. The original industrial revolution was a energy revolution therefore moving forward we have to solve the problems we initially created. Though because of the original revolution and technological developments we can now change and form our society towards a greener society. Not only a greener society but solving challenges mankind is not capable of achieving. Such as specific jobs with precision and how machinery may be more fitting. On the other side, another idea that was mentioned was free speech and how technology could encourage that. More specifically, how technology will allow us to stimulate our brains and encourage creative thinking. This is very interesting because it allows other to see one’s approach to problem solving and it will help the society discover many more ways of approaches to learning. The fourth industrial revolution relate to our tech design class because in the future, prototype modelling, digital sketching, and design thinking will all be essential skills that will need to be used in order to not only understand the machinery but to immerse ourselves into the technology as well. By immersing ourselves into the technology we will have the capability to solve the problems of the world as the solution to a lot of disease is technology. For example in the video, they treated a patient that patient by connecting the artificial leg to their spine nerve.

1/05/2021 – Problem Statement

The problem that I am addressing through my lamp would be to use as much recycled material as possible. Often times, people are quick to assume that garbage is of little to no value, in reality certain types of plastic such as polycarbonate exhibit extremely strong and supportive properties. Therefore by utilising these unwanted materials, I am hoping I can make lamps that are wanted. Not only does this prove the point that society is visually judgemental, but it also tells us there is perspective to everything. From a certain perspective, the lamp may look like trash, but from another it can be considered a work of art and proof of great craftsmanship. As a result, in addition to actually using recycled materials, I also want to illustrate the problem of “perspective” in society and how we should not judge things upon first glance. Some constraints may include the amount and type of recycled material I can attain because if there are little strong plastic pieces I can actually craft with, it will be hard to make the product as I had planned and will most likely need to find supplemental materials. Another constraints would be heat because without heat it is extremely hard to create designs with curvature for plastic. In addition to it being a safety concern, heat combined with plastic, if not done right, can release harmful toxins. Therefore, it would probably mean I would need to use a combination of tools and brute force to achieve the curvy shape if I do want to include that design. To conclude, in order to fix all of these issues while maintaining the problem I am trying to communicate within my product, it will require a lot of pre-scavenging for materials and open-mindedness to the possibility of working with other supplemental materials.

My

My final lamp drawing consists of a wire organisation system and an elegant sleek design. I have decided that the main frame will be made of aluminium and the lamp shades consists of white linen that allows the light to not be overwhelming but still provide adequate lighting to illuminate the surrounding area.
