Finished Last surrealist painting

PROMPT:Create a unreal looking oil painting set in a vast, dreamy barren desert under a pale, sky that shifts from blue to yellowish. Solid objects seem to be melting and liquefing. Dropping modern phone like forms hang over branches and edges, warped rather than rigid and normal looking. Scene feels quiet and uncanny. Really detailed oil painting with smooth brushstrokes and realistic textures. Physics should look impossible since supposed to be fictional. Long shadows, and unseltting mood and long shadows. It should should how phones destory out ability to think properly, so add a surreal looking life form (brain) with phones melting on it. Foreground should have all the subjects, and backround should be sharp geometric mountains.

TOOK MANY TRIES! Shifted to brain with phone instead of just phones to add more meaning to it.

Analysis: I chose to use phones and a brain along with surrealism to depict the negative effect of frequent phone use on the person. Surrealism really focuses on making thinks look dreamlike and surreal, and I wanted to depict the dreamlike state that people fall into while scrolling online for hours on end and ruining their brain. I hoped by uses melting and a barren landscape to show the isolation of people from outside society when using phones.

Create a large scale painting that uses bright contrasting vibrant colors. Create 4 , silkscreen painting of trump. All panels identical, the background of the panels should me single color, and then some different colors in the face, all virbrant. Make sure the person in frame looks hap;y and smiling. Each frame is indentical except for colors The foure frames should be equaly deivided on a white backround with some white visible in between the frams. Make sure the trump is less detailed Make them squares, and 2×2.

HEREIS MY FINAL ATTEMPT, my prompt changed from asking for sydney sweeney, to trump and also asking to make it 2×2 and much more simple. Overall I think it turned out great!

Analysis:

Andy Warhol’s silkscreen printing technique was used due to it being repeatable and not one of a kind like find art. I chose trump because he play a major role in America, regardless if he is good or bad. I feel that trump was one of the best person to chose because trump tends to say, like other politicians, a lot of untrue things repeatadley almost as if trying to make it true. I also thought that since he is super famous like Marilyn Monroe, he was a good choice to use for this project.

Thu, Feb 19 HW – Image and description of completed homework

For homework I worked on creating a prompt for my pop art project!

Today i will focus on making it better!

Create a large scale painting that uses bright contrasting vibrant colors. Create 4 frames featuring mass/popular culture, such as comic books, and mass produced objects. Create 4 , silkscreen painting of Sydney sweeney the famous actor. Add some purposeful misalignment but not much, just a slight hint of it.

I tried a lot of times in gemini. After trying nearly 30 times, I concluded that no matter the prompts, there was a key concept that AI struggled to replicated: The concept of having it able to be interpreted in various ways.

Here were my prompts: I tried each many times:

1:Create a large scale monocrhoome painting that portrays greif during ww1. Use fragmented, overlapping, sharp angled shapes to created a 2d effect that evokes various emtions in reader. arange everything tightly, and have it be collage like with newspaper thigns around it.make it smaller and much more simple. Simple is key word. Everything including news should be black and white. Less detial. and shapes should be werid. Everything each is one color no gradients

The first one gave me one me the best one. Here is my best one.

Analysis: I chose this as my final because even though it doesn’t represent a contemporary issue, it uses ww1, which was before Picasso’s Guernica. I chose ww1 specifically because it represents a lot of the themes that Guernica represents, such as grief, remorse, and sorrow. I also found it good because I could include ww1 newspapers in the collage like Picasso did for his infamous Guernica painting on the Spanish civil war.

I also did several other tries, here are my attempts.

I put it here since did not have enough space in the other place.

Andy Warhols, The Shot Marilyns 1964

Analysis of Andy Warhol’s Style
Pop art emerged in the mid -1950s in Britain and late 1950s in the US. Pop art challenged elements of traditional fine art by portraying elements of mass/popular culture, such as advertising/comic books, and mass produced objects. Pop art is interpreted as a major reaction to the ideas of abstract expressionism that emerged in the 1940s after WW2, as well as an expression of those ideas. Pop art often takes imagery that is used in advertising. Product labeling and logos are chosen by many pop artists such as Andy Warhol in his Campbell soup cans art pieces. Famous figures were also featured in Pop art, as seen in my chosen pieces of Andy Warhol’s Shot Marilyns. The Shot Marilyns, made in 1964, consisted of 40 inch silkscreen paintings of Marilyn Monroe, a super famous actor. The reason for the name shot was due to an incident that happened where a comedian Dorothy Pumbar, shot with a revolver, through the paintings of Marilyn Monroe. The shot blue painting even sold in 2022 for a whopping 195 million dollars. These paintings feature repetition of her face with artificial vibrant colors, and purposeful misalignment in many.

Salvador Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory (1931)

Analysis of Salvador Dalí’s Surrealist Artwork

Surrealism is a 20th century art movement that aimed to “unlock” the subconscious mind through distorted and weird dreamlike imagery. The leader of the art movement, André Breton, wanted to resolve the previously contradictory dreams of reality.  Works of surrealism work on the act of surprise through weird and uncanny juxtapositions. Surrealist pieces were also shaped through sigman’s and freud’s theories on dreams and unconsciousness. The emergence of this unique art style also was a reaction to the rationalism that led to world war 1. One of the most infamous surrealist paintings comes from Salvador Dalí in his 1931 piece “The persistence of memory.” This unique painting features several melted watches that aim to represent the irrational and fluid nature of time. The painting uses a color palette made mostly of warm earthy tones and white tones in the sky that evoke a dream like atmosphere.  The soft, melting watches contrast heavily with the sharp geometric mountains in the background. To finalize, the painting also is hyper realistic especially with the depictions of the watches.

Fri, Feb 13 HW – Image and description of completed homework

For homework for today I worked on my cubism paragraph.

For homework I researched and completed a description of Cubism, and chose Picassos Guernica. Here is my description

Analysis of Picasso’s Guernica

Cubism originated in the early 20th century and featured unique characteristics such as geometric and fragmented shapes/forms. It depicts objects from different perspectives almost as if to fragment reality. Analytical painting, which focused mostly on monochromatic color palettes, was the first phase of cubism (1907-12). Then from 1914 and on, we see synthetic cubism which is made up of more vibrant color palettes and collage. Some of the main artists that represented cubism included Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. For my specific reference painting, I am focusing on Pablo Picasso’s Guernica, which represents the horrible bombing on innocent civilians in the Basque by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italian forces. Picasso reflects this horror and chaos through symbols such as the monochromatic tone which represents photojournalism and death, and the collage-like synthetic cubism which aims to fragment reality. There are also several symbols that are part of it such as the bull, the horse, the light/eye, and the oil lamp. Each of these symbolize darkness and anit-war messages. Overall this painting aims to evoke emotions of grief and terror in the audience.

Wed, Feb 11 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

Today I made everything 0.0001 stroke and fixed all the layers and outlined them so that everything was connected. I plan on printing when I have time during consultation or class so that I can finish my second project. For the mean time, I will make sure everything is tip top and that it looks good. I have it on the thumb drive so its ready!

To add on I also started researching the art project and chose cubism and Picasso’s Guernica as my first one! I also chose Andy Wharhols Shot Marilyns as my second for pop art. Finally I chose for my third,  Surrealism, I chose Frida Kahlo’s the Two Fridas (1939).

Wed, Feb 11 HW – Image and description of completed homework

For homework I spent time going through and making sure all parts were in respective layers and that nothing was floating so that printing would go smoothly first or second try. I also added a lot of small details such as a center which I found to look best out of other options, and on the bars extending from petals, I added a black highlighting under it to add more 3d look. I am now ready to print I believe and will check with you regarding any required fixes!

Mon, Feb 9 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

Tue, Jan 20 HW – Image and description of completed homework

No HW, almost done/

Fri, Jan 16 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

Today I finished all of my panels! I printed 3 today and had one from the other day! They all turned out great so no need for reprints so now I can build them! I also am going to test paint next class so I sprayed some substance to make sure it doesn’t bleed on the test prints and now I have to let it dry!

Fri, Jan 16 HW – Image and description of completed homework

No homework, all work done so far currently in the printing process of my final lamp!

Wed, Jan 14 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

Today I made a lot of progress, I finished one of my panels after organizing all my layers. Next class I hope to finish 2 other panels!

Wed, Jan 14 HW – Image and description of completed homework

I didnt have anything really to do as I am ready to print completely, I checked my whole design and all the layers are correct and everything is correct stroke size and everything.

Mon, Jan 12 CW – Image and description of completed classwork\

Today I got an insane amount of work done! I finished and fixed my vector through cut layer which was previously flawed as it didnt highlight all the negative space. I also did 3 test prints of all the difficult layers that would need to be verified prior to printing my whole lamp. Overall, I feel like today was very productive and next time I will print my actual lamp!

Mon, Jan 12 HW – Image and description of completed homework

For homework I finsished everything, and is ready to testprint. I focused on fixing contrast issues which I probably still have a couple. I finished vector through cut and final edits on the etching layer! I also look forward to seeing how it would turn out on an actual panel!

Thu, Jan 8 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

Today I created all the outlines and the lines in the actual layers, and amade them all 0.0001 stroke size. Next class i look forward to actually creating my lamp with test prints and fixing any lingering issues!

Thu, Jan 8 HW – Image and description of completed homework

I found some issues in my outline for the through cut on the 4th panel from lsat time so I fixed those issues and the novel outline is in a large stroke as seen in the photo below. This took me a good while to reshape and get right and next class I look forward to adding final touches and a practice cut!

Tue, Jan 6 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

Today I worked on and finished the vector throughcut etching layer. I am very happy with my progress today and here it is!

Tue, Jan 6 HW – Image and description of completed homework

I worked a little bit over break on the etching layer/ the major outline around everything and I hope to do more on it today!

Wed, Dec 17 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

Today I converted everything to grayscale, and worked on making my own clouds, and also deleting all the continuation outside the panel. For homework I am going to work on the vector etching outline and the through-cut.

Wed, Dec 17 HW – Image and description of completed homework

I ran into a big issue, I had a digiexam test earlier today and it erased all my work since I forgot to save it. However, as designers, we must understand and know how to accept and fix these issues, so what I did is start from scratch, but this time, have an idea of what to fix, in around 45 minutes I was alble to go back to the point similiar to where I was before, except this time I am happier with the aesthetics. Now I need to cut out parts of it so they all fit in frame.

Mon, Dec 15 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

Today I worked on my adobe file. What I did is created an outline of the ramp shape, and then generative filled it with a texture, I also created several people on skaetboards and clouds. I started cutting out parts that i Dont need and converted everything to grayscale.

Mon, Dec 15 HW – Image and description of completed homework

In class tommorow I will commence my adobe sketch since I finished my large drawing of my chosen idea for the luminary project and also defined all the negative space. I started thinking about how I am going to prompt engineer to make my light panels.

Thu, Dec 11 HW – Image and description of completed classwork

I chose to switch to do skateboarding as my main theme not only since I used to skateboard very often, but also I did it for a while 6-10. I have made great memories skateboarding alone and with my coach and I would love to do my project on it.

This would work as I, like in the sketch would create a continous skateboard park with the bacjround as trees and other ramps and have several people skateboarding doing tricks. Also for detail I can have some lawrenceille themed small grafitii and hints throughout my design.

Light passes through my design through the backround, mainly through the empty parts such as the sky and where people are not skateboarding in the back. Thats my negative space. Here are all my photos, for skiing my reference images are below, for the other two, I remebered my old skatepark and invented some of the backround and for the rock climbing I looked at some images but mostly with my head since I rockclimb.

Thu, Dec 11 CW – Image and description of completed homework

Today I worked on my official large 4 panel image. I created a skatepark with people doing tricks. Even though it was not perfect, and I can fixt some parts such as the grafiti, overall I think that I refected and continued lines well across my 4 panels and I look forward to continueing my project.

Here are my reference images —>

Tues, Dec 9 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

Possible Themes – Surfing, Tennis, Rock Climbing

I chose to do skiing as my main theme not only since I ski very often, but also I have done it for a while. I have made great memories skiing with my best friends before they moved away and felt it was the perfect theme to do for this project. I ski yearly, and have some of the best memories doing so with my family and my friends.

Skiing would work as I could place several frames of one slope where people are skiing down it with mountains and trees in the background with a chairlift on the top. This would include negative space and these details would add to the complexity of the lamp and the meaning.

Light passes through my design through behind the mountains and through the trees, the spot that will not pass through are the ski slope and the people and the trees/ski lift. To add on, to lead our eye acros a panel, I have a continuation of the line of the chairlift and the angle of the slope.

Here are some of my reference images and my sketches. For homework Ill create next sketches and take better photo of refernce image ->

Tues, Dec 9 HW – Image and description of completed homework

Done and ready to cut! On thumbdrive too!

Thu, Dec 6 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

I worked on my file, I made negative space outline, reformatted and organized my layers, made everything 0.0001 stroke so it would print, and transfered it onto thumbdrive!

Sat, Dec 6 HW – Image and description of completed homework

Today for homework, worked on outlining the dog to emphasize the negative space and also at a grey backround to it, I also tweaked some of the outline and the alignments of the gray scale photo on the outline that we created last class.

Thu, Dec 4 HW – Image and description of completed homework

For homework I watched all 3 videos, there was not any directions on how to prove that we watched the videos so Ill describe them in detail. The 3 videos discussed the step by step process on how we as students, can succeed this term. Specifically, we need to show not only completion of homework on this blog page through a screenshot, but describe and show our process over time on this blog aswell as give some sort of description. It is also crucial that we keep our blog page up to date with images if needed. We also have several resources such as the syllabus which tells us not only due dates, but how many images we need a week. An example of someone who did this really well was Ava B, one of your past students who documented her process really well especially for her lasercutting and led light project.

Thu, Dec 4 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

Today, I created an ai Jack Russel photo catching a ball. I created an outline and have put it into gray scale. Here is the photo of the outline and one photo with the outline and the photo.

Tue, Dec 2 HW – Image and description of completed homework

I created my wordpress acount, which was the homework due this day!

Tue, Dec 2 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

Today I utilized the pen tool and the option key to outline the negative space in my newly generated AI dog image. I also outlined the outside and filled the negative space inside the window with red to clearly show where the negative space is in my image. Today I learned how to take advantage of the pen tool as apposed to the curvature tool to get more precise lines which can help when laser ingraving especially vector engraving since vector is best for precise lines and edges.

Also I was unsure as to how we were so supposed to take the image and I just did the HW and saw that this is how we are supposed to screenshot it so I just uploading the image below. But I had it all done in class.
