I finished my research paragraph for surrealism.

Surrealism was an art movement that emerged in Paris in the 1920s, growing out of the Dada movement and inspired by ideas such as Marxism and Freudian ideas. It aimed to explore the unconscious mind, dreams, and irrational thought. Surrealist artists included Salvador Dalí and René Magritte. They used vivid, unrealistic color combinations and strange, dreamlike arrangements of everyday objects to blur the line between fantasy and reality. Their works often had dramatic, mysterious atmospheres that created wondrous thinking. Through this approach, Surrealism challenged viewers to question what is real and to confront the hidden forces of the brain. It redefined how imagination and art could express the human experience.

This image has a dreamy and mysterious vibe challenging the reality of such an image.

I forgot to add images for the ones below so I researched and found images for todays homework.

Pop art:

This image shows the bold colors that were present in pop art.

Cubism:

This image shows the dull colors used in cubism, as well as the use of geometric shapes to create the composition.

I finished my research and paragraphs for two of my chosen art movements.

Pop art was an artistic movement that emerged in the mid 1950s in Britain and became more prominent in the US during the early 1960s. It was largely influenced by mass media, consumer culture, and everyday objects. It aimed to critique these widespread ideas and objects and it blurred the line between high art and popular culture. Pop art is often characterized by bold and vibrant colors with borrowed images from mass media and pop culture. They also often use techniques such as silk screening to print and finish their artwork. Key artists in pop art include Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Cubism was a revolutionary art movement that began and emerged in Paris in 1907. It was largely influenced by the geometric forms of Paul Cézanne works and African art. Cubism aimed to show the deeper meaning behind objects beyond just what they look like. It also worked to express the actual complexity of modern objects using defining characteristics like breaking down objects into geometric shapes. Within the work, they also gave multiple viewpoints of the object at the same time. Cubism also often relied on flat lighting and lacked depth and contrast. Key artists included Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.

I also flattened and combined all the outlining so that it will print correctly.

only layer where the middle will be glued on.

I wanted the middle layer to look like there are a lot of “floating parts”.

I originally had thought that each layer was connected to the frame, but some elements needed to be extended and shaped differently so I fixed all of that.

Thur, Oct 23 CW – image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-23

I tested different stain colors for my eventually printed design. I liked this color combination to the best.

I finished outlineing the negative space in my last panel. After finish the linework for the mountain and clouds it will also be ready for print.

Thur, Oct 23 HW – image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-23

I finished all the linework and negative space for my second panel and it is ready to print. I also finished the linework for my last panel and began outlining the negative space.

Tue, Oct 21 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-21

Worked more on my layered mandala. Most layers are connected to the frame, except for the top piece in the middle which I play to have glued on. I used rotations and reflections to ensure that there is symmatrey throughout my design.

Tue, Oct 21 HW – image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-21

Today for homework I worked on my layered mandala even more. I encorporated new elements using the scissor tool on the outside layer of the mandala. I also found ways to connect the mandala to the frame to ensure that it prints correctly.

Fri, Oct 17 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-17

Today I finished both of my adjacent prints. I used the exacto knife to cut out the remaining paper behind the prints.

I am almost finished with the layered mandala tutorial. I finished up to the part where we were learning about how to suspend the mandala so that it isn’t floating. I learned a lot about how the use of layers and swatches can help the composition in this project and create the illusions of outlines. I also learned lots of keyboard shortcute.

Fri, Oct 17 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-17

Today I finished all of my linework and negative space for the third panel. I went in and traced each of the negative space for the trees because flattening it didn’t work. I also think that I am going to do a test print because I’m not sure if I should also create negative space in between branches.

Wed, Oct 15 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-15

Today in class I finished my second test print. I ran through the clouds and the mountain of the print twice so that the contrast was enough. I learned that different pieces of wood can have an affect on the color and contrast, so I got 3 more panels of the same piece of wood to minimize differences. The negative space looks good on this new panel even though I couldn’t get through every single branch.

Wed, Oct 15 HW – Image and description of completed homework- HWDueDate 2025-10-15

Made up Oct13 HW and Oct13 Classwork for homework today because I was at a squash tournament in California. I completed the mandala tutorial. In this tutorial I learned how to rotate and reflect things using smart guidelines across the middle. This makes for an extremely symmetrical mandala. I also used tools such as the circle and square tools while using keyboard shortcuts such as option and shift to ensure that the shapes were made around the middle. Furthermore, I learned to use the scissor tool to cut some parts of the mandala. I also learned the importance of the cmd D shortcut in this project as it because it repeats transformations which is a huge part of this project.

I also finished the composition for my last tile. Once the negative space and line work is done with that panel, all panels will be ready for printing. I geenrated a couple of variations of palm trees to convey the idea of summer, and I found one that I liked. Since it came with a background, I used the direct selection tool to remove the verteces one by one.

Thur, Oct 9 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-9

I finished my first print. From this print I ilearned that with my negative space, I need to be careful with thin branches as one of them broke off. I chose white as the background so that there would be a natural nature look to the light shining through the luminary. The settings for this was as suggested but the line work’s power was reduced to 10 and I ran the etching twice so that there would be more contrast in my final image.

Thur, Oct 9 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-9

I finished the third winter panels composition. I found a tree I liked and I worked on the contrast as well as simplifying line work. Since the trees are supposed to be in the foreground, I didn’t want to simplify too much detail so that it would have the visual illusion. I also edited lots of the trees as the vector generator had some awkward bits.

Tue, Oct 7 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-7

Computer was broken in class today. Will make up in consult.

Tue, Oct 7 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-7

I finished the second panel for test printing and I started generating vectors for the third panel. I went through lots of variations for trees with snow on it but I settled for the one shown on the composition.

I finished tracing all the negative space for the second slide.

Sat, Oct 4 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-4

Today in class I simplified the line work for the trees. I also started working ont he negative space in between trees. Since the laser cutter would burn through the smaller branches, I am going to try cutting only the negative space between the trunks of each tree first.

Sat, Oct 4 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-4

I finished the composition for my second panel which I increased the contrast of the mountain and I fixed it up so that my trees can show. I also added smaller pumpkins from another generated vector onto some parts of the tree to give it the idea of fall. I also finished simplifying the linework for my second panel mountain.

Wed, Oct 1 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-1

Today in class I ran a test print. I ran the etching twice and it worked really well with darkening the image and improving the contrast. I also added a lot more detail than before into the image and it worked really well to give the illusion of depth in the trees.

I removed all of the space behind the trees with no leaves. I also increased the contrast of the trees in my spring panel.

Wed, Oct 1 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-1

I also started generating images for my second panel with the trees. I found trees that I liked and the use of some pumpkins to add to the composition coudl help with the idea of fall.

I outlined my negative space for the areas in between the trees. Last time I had trouble with the smaller details within the trees because when I used the pathfinder tool it flattened it all out. This time I used the pen tool to go back in and trace the smaller areas to ensure that there is adequate negative space.

Mon, Sept 29 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-29

Went back in and simplified the original linework, but kept a lot of detail in to ensure that it can transfer over to the next print.

Today in class I tried a test print. From the test I learned that: the contrast in from the trees to the mountain needs to be extremely exagerated, I took too much detail out of the line work for the trees, and I need to add it back in, and finally I should cut through the smaller parts of the tree to ensure that light shines through.

Mon, Sep 29 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-29

I finished outlining the vector through cut for the negative space between my trees. After I did that, I also simplified any parts of the outline that may be too detailed. I should be ready for a test print next class.

I simplified the linework for the mountain. I also simplified the line work for my clouds.

Thur, Sept 25 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-25

  • Used a copy of the trees and flattened it out to start taking out all lines except for the negative space so that light can shine through the trunks and branches of my trees.
  • Simplified line work for trees a lot. To speed up the process I used the direct selection and lasso tool to take out a lot of bulk in the middle of the trees.
  • This image shows the progress I made with making the third slide (winter slide) look like its covered in snow in relation to the other panels.

Thur, Sept 25 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-25

  • Increased contrast in the mountain background view through all the panels
  • On spring panel
    • created negative space at in all the trees so that the trees will be visible and so that light can pass through different areas of my finished luminary, not just the top part
    • added clouds to fill some of the big negative space at the top- still unsure if it fits well with my image so far

Tue, Sept 23 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-23

Today in class I started working digitally on my luminary project. I created many different layers so that my image is easier to work with. I first started with the mountain background and when I found a generated image that I liked, I used the shape builder tool to cut the image so that it fits perfectly into each panel. I then experimented with different ways to add detail to my left most panel which is supposed to represent spring. I added trees and birds using the generated vector tool after several different tries and I put them together towards a composition. The image below shows the spring panel in more detail. Towards the end, I noticed that there is not enough contrast through the grayscale and thus the laser cutter is going to have trouble cutting it. This gave the idea that I could have negative behind the trees to furthur accentuate the trees and to have light shining through different parts of the panel.

Tue, Sept 23 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-23

I ended up going with the continous mountain landscape because I think it was able to encorporate the connection of the four panels the best. I want that each panel has similarities such as a body of water and mountains but defining elements such as cherry blossoms for spring, beach in the summer, and snow in the winter. I think using negative space on the top and through the bodies of water is the best way for light to fully shine through the luminary.

The first thing I did for homework today was make up what I was unable to do in class due to a missed class. I experimented with two concepts. One revolving around having a central theme of a tree in all four panels of the four seasons with differences to show each season. The other idea I worked with was having a continuous mountain landscape, but each panel has differences that also identify each season.

Missed class today- gave permission in class on thursday to submit concept sketches on Tuesdays class.

Sat, Sept 20 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-20

paragraph was submitted on time in the blog post below.

Thur, Sept 18 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-18

Started working on my Luminary project. I started off by brainstorming and I came up with the two themes of sports or seasons and I ended up choosing seasons. The following paragraph is my concept paragraph: I chose this theme because, as a child, I spent a lot of time outdoors playing with my friends which gave me a strong connection to nature. I also think that negative space, varied shades, and the linework can really accentuate specific elements of the four seasons such as snow and fallen leaves as if it isn’t done right, the snow and leaves might just look like a huge blob. I also think that the four seasons are a great way to utilize four tiles of the luminary to show the transition between each seasons by keeping certain elements through all of the panels, and only changing a few very defining elements of each season to show the similarity and differences.

Day student: Left laser cut image at home.

finished project

Mon, Sept 15 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-15

Cut out the full image. Learned and applied how speed and power is used for different types of cuts (negative space, line work, etc). Saw through this example that some of my contrast is still not enough.

Furthur simplified line work. Added more contrast to the etch. Prepared for print. Added new layer for the vector through cut.

Mon, Sept 15 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-15

Created a vector outline for the negative space using the pen tool.

Scaled the image so that the feet and tail were touching the frame.

Continued to simplify line work for the laser cutter. Deleted vertices with direct selection tool.

Thur, Sept 11 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-11

  • Creating even more grayscale contrast in the image to ensure that the lasercutter can see the difference.
  • Learned how to and worked on simplifying line work for the laser cutter.
  • Learned how to use the direct selection tool to simplify line work more effectively.
