Rapid Prototyping Video Reflection

They created a prototype which took them one day and they were able to create different ideas on how to manipulate their prototype which also took 45 minutes. This connects to our project because as we only have one day to do it, which means we have to create our prototype in similar time constraints. This was not their first prototype and they had to figure out the best material. They had to learn how to model to the costumer, which is similar to us as we have to take into account different phones and their sizes. The video talks about how we all have the same way of prototyping a product and it is the realm of finding a new insight into products.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution

The Fourth Industrial Revolution will be the use of computers and technology to further advance human life. This video talks about Mobile Supercomputing, Artificially-Intelligent robots, Self-driving card, Nuero-Technological brain enhancements, and Genetic editing. All elements that would alter while still trying to improve human life. This revolution will be characterized by new technology that incorporates many different worlds together and is going to being able to change the fundamental ideas of what makes a human. This could be seen as scary to many humans as it changes the basic structure of what makes us human but the writer of this tries to show how it can help advance the quality and length of our lives.

Bag and Coat Holder Design – January 6, 2020

My product is designed for Lawrenceville students as a way to hold up their bags and coats. My product would hook onto tables during class and would be an easy way to have access to both your bag and coat. Our design shows two different pieces that will be later glued together, one being the heavy part holding it up and another being a hook. My partner, Ayan, and I will create two different prototypes, a 3D printed design and a wood design. We created two different lengths and and different designs as they were cut on different machines.

3D Printed Prototype – January 7 , 2020

For this prototype we had 3D printed both pieces of our drawing. Once we had printed it out we had realized that the red one is too short and the only other way to fix it would be to add length to the top.

3D Printed Prototype – January 9, 2020

Once we had printed both pieces we soon realized that without tolerance in the handle both pieces would not be able to fit into each other as they are the exact size. Another problem that could’ve happen was that the material it was printed in could have shrunk due to the material. To avoid this problem I created another prototype with 0.005 tolerance so that they could tightly fit into each other. Another adjustment I made was making the length of the top of the handle longer to be able to fit a more different variety of tables.

New 3D Prototype – January 13-14, 2020

We also thought of another idea in that the hook would have an angled bottom meaning that it would latch onto the table rather than just hanging.

Plan for the new design
We then realized a better way to create this would be creating it as a slant so that the weight of the bag or jacket would create a self support (1.20.20)
This is the final design but we realized that it wouldn’t be able to hold heavy items since it is slippery and doesn’t have rubber to hold it up. (1.21.20)
To solve this problem we created a new design, similar to the first one but with an indent for the rubber. We first found the thickness of the rubber grip then created the indent to print. This ideally will be the final product. (1.23.20)

Pricing and Profit

A PLA filament of 1kg costs around $25.00 each and the “2PLUS” takes 21g of PLA to make, therefore we could make 47 of them per spool. It takes about $0.53 to make each “2PLUS” meaning if we price the products at $2.99 dollars we will make $140.53 dollars but $115.53 dollars of profit per 1kg of PLA (not taking into account the deductibles etc.). We can buy 20,834 pieces of rubber for about one dollar. So we continue to have a high amount of profit.

As you can see we added rubber grip to the bottom to help the product stay on the table.
This is our final product poster that we will be placing on our booth.
This another version/ our improved design. This design will be able to have a customization on the back and will have rubber on the top and bottom making it more secure.

FINAL PROJECT

I created this airpod case so that I would be able to charge my case next to my bed without it being able to fall over.

This is my original design. On the first day I got all the measurements and created the outline. (02.13)
I then extruded it so it would be able to stand up (02.13)
I then created a whole so that the wire from my charger would be able to fit. (02.17)
This is my case in cura. This is what it will look like while it prints. It needed a bit of support on the bottom but other than that it should print well. (02.17)
This is final product. It printed perfectly and everything fit but I had to sand down the interior of it so that it wouldn’t be so tight. Now I am going to make an airpod case for the new airpods.
Since I had extra time I created different variations for the new AirPods. I also created different heights for the model to see if the charger would fit better.
