Week 10

Thur, Feb 20 CW – image of work completed in class

In class today, I printed out three panels that are way better than the previous one because I found a proper setting for the panels. I slightly increase the speed and decrease the power, so it doesn’t look burned. I will print out the last panel and assemble them in the next class.

Thur, Feb 20 HW – image of completed homework

For homework, I adjusted the greyscale of these two panels because when I printed these out, some part is burned. I make the highest greyscale to 60, so when I set the power to 60, it won’t be burned. In class, I will print out the panels.

Tue, Feb 18 CW – image of work completed in class

Today in class, I did some test prints, and the results were bad. I set the power to 70 and the speed to 25, which I used to do. This time, the entire panel looks burned and the contrast is not that clear at this point. For the second panel, even though I set the power to 100, the negative space is not completely cut through, and the panel frame is broken. I will go during consultation to do more test prints.

Tue, Feb 18 HW – image of completed homework

For homework, I refined the little details such as the stroke, the greyscale, and the connecting point between negative space and the panel layout. My entire project is done by now. My next step is to test print the first two panels in class.

Week 9

Fri, Feb 14 CW – Image of work completed in class

Today in class, I added some contrast to the Great Wall of China and the oriental Pearl tower by making the mountains and the buildings darker and the background lighter. I am ready to print these out in next class.

Fri, Feb 14 HW – Image of completed homework

For homework, I finished the vector etch and negative space of my last panel, which means that now I have to focus on making the contrast in the panels. I will try to add more contrast to every panels. For class, I will do some test prints.

Wed, Feb 12 CW – Image of work completed in class

Today in class, I decided to change the design of my last panel. My original panel was Shanghai World Financial Center, but I didn’t like the building AI-generated, so I changed the design to Shanghai jin mao tower. I turned this to greyscale and added more contrast to the design. For homework, I will finish the negative space and add some vector etch.

Wed, Feb 12 HW – Image of completed homework

For homework, I deleted some raster etch and added some negative space to the Great Wall of China because I realized that the light had to come out from the panel, and my original design blocked the light from coming out. For the third panel, I finished the vector etching.

Mon, Feb 10 CW – Image of work completed in class

Today in class, I finished etching the first panel by adding more details to the windows. I also added some contrast to the first panel. For the mountain and trees of the second panel, I etched them and added some contrast to them.

Mon, Feb 10 HW – Image of completed homework

I added more details to the balustrade and the windows. For the balustrade, I made a semicircle with two straight lines to create a semi-ellipse shape. I also added two straight lines between balustrades so it looks safer. For class, I will finish etching the first panel and start to work on adding more etching on the second panel.

Week 8

Fri, Feb 7 CW – image of work completed in class

After realizing that this project was due by the end of the term, I decided to add more etching to the panels. I added more details to the balustrade and windows for the first panel, the Chinese pagoda. For the homework, I will finish etching the balustrades and the windows of the first window

Fri, Feb 7 HW – image of completed homework

For homework, I finished the second panel and the outline of third panel. I traced the fortress on the great wall of china. For the third panel, I did Shanghai oriental pearl tower, which is one of the most magnificent Chinese architecture. I added some buildings at the back to set off its majesty.

Thur, Feb 5 CW – image of work completed in class

Today in class, I finished the first panel and the negative space of the second panel. I traced some bricks of the great wall. For homework, I will finish the etching part for the second panel and change the two panels to create a deeper contrast.

Wed, Feb 5 HW – image of completed homework

Today, I am still working on etching different floors of the pagoda. For the etch, I usually focus on the tiles on the roof, which really shows the features of a Chinese pagoda. I also added some etch on the windows, making them inclined, and the incline shows the view from different perspective.

Week 7

Wed, Jan 29 CW – Image of work completed in class

Today in class, I did the etching for the pagoda. I etched the eave and some curves on the bracket, eaves, and roof. I added some straight and curved lines to etch the roof. Ancient Chinese added curves to prevent erosion. I will work on etching the windows and balustrade for homework.

Wed, Jan 29 HW – Image of completed homework

Today, I finished the negative space and attached the eave to the outline, making the panel less fragile. I also changed the color of the windows, making the right side darker and the left side lighter, as if the sunshine was coming from the left side.

Mon, Jan 27 CW – Image of work completed in class

Today in class, I traced the negative space of the pagoda and planned to finish the outline for homework. For the outline, I need to extend some eaves and finial, so the building can connect to the panel, making it less fragile.

Mon, Jan 27 HW – Image of completed homework

For the luminary project, my theme is Chinese Architecture, both from ancient and modern. I aim to show the connection between ancient and modern Chinese architecture. I turned these AI-generated designs to greyscale for later trace.

Prompt1: Chinese octagonal pagoda

Prompt 2: Great Wall of China

Prompt 3: Shanghai oriental pearl tower

Prompt 4: Shanghai Financial World Center.

Week 6

Thur, Jan 23 CW – image of work completed in class

Today in class, I printed all four panels and the base for the pencil box, but I still have to sand and assemble these panels to make it a pencil box. I have tried different speeds and power for the raster etch and finally found one that is the best for my print. I also realize that different wood boards can produce different contrasts even if all the settings are the same.

Thur, Jan 23 HW – image of completed homework

After realizing that I needed more vector etch, I added more etch on the bird and tiger. I traced the wings, feathers, and beak of the bird and the leaves of the branch. For the tiger, I traced its stripes, ears, and legs since I believe that the upper body is fine so far. I will go to the consultation tomorrow and print these out.

Tue, Jan 21 CW – image of work completed in class

Today, I tested the print on every panel and decided to add more vector etching on the bird and tiger panels. I also made more contrast between the leaves and the bird’s fur so the color difference could be seen.

Tue, Jan 21 HW – image of completed homework

Today, I adjusted all minor details of the panels, arranged them in the correct layer and order, and added some lines so that the subject could be cut out properly.

Week 5

Fri, Jan 17 CW – image of work completed in class

Today in class, I adjusted the negative space of the first panel. Last time when I printed this out, the cut didn’t work properly, so I adjusted the panel this time. I didn’t have time to print out panels in class today. I will make some final adjustment this weekend and ready to print by next class.

Fri, Jan 17 HW – image of completed homework

Today, I finished etching the bird, and I think I have finished all three panels for the pencil box design. In next class, I will print out all three panels to see where I can adjust further.

Wed, Jan 15 CW – image of work completed in class

Today in class, I worked on etching outline the wings. I will finish the outline for homework and add some details to the feather.

Wed, Jan 15 HW – image of completed homework

I finished tracing the negative space(the outline) and created a space between the bird’s legs and the branch to demonstrate the vividness. I also adjusted the wing’s and branch’s outlines so the image can attach to the frame. In the next class, I will work on the etch layer, so the feathers on the wing are more life-like.

Mon, Jan 13 CW – image of work completed in class

Today, I trace the negative space of the leaves of the branch. I almost finished the negative space in class, but I need to add a few more details for the negative space. I will add these details for homework.

Mon, Jan 13 HW – image of completed homework

Today, I just traced the negative space, and I will finish the negative space in class tomorrow. This will be my last panel, which will be a bird. So all four panels revolve around the idea of animals.

Week 4

Thur, Jan 9 CW – image of work completed in class

Today in class, I worked on the test print, but it turns out that my negative didn’t work while printing. I think it is because I didn’t set up the print properly. So I adjusted some of the outline and its line weight.

I also started a new panel today, I changed the previous design to a new one. The prompt is a bird on a branch, and I traced its wing in class today.

Thur, Jan 9 HW – image of completed homework

For the homework, I removed the background so the tiger could attach it to the outline of the panel so it wouldn’t fall off. I also rearranged the layer so it was clearer. I made some parts darker and some lighter to show the strips on the tiger. I also deleted some of the outline of the tiger by adding points and deleting points so the tiger is actually attached to the outline. I will do the test print tomorrow in class.

Tue, Jan 7 CW – image of work completed in class

Today in class, I did several test prints, and they all failed. The part that was supposed to be etched was cut out. I concluded that the failure was caused by the wrong layers, so I arranged the layers into three categories: cut layer, normal etch layer, and line etch layer. By the way, Kai and Alex helped me with the printing process.

Tue, Jan 7 HW – image of completed homework

Today, I turned the image to greyscale and made some parts darker to contrast with the stripes on the tiger. I finished tracing the outline and started etching the subtle parts of the tiger such as its beard and eyes. I will start to work on the background in class tomorrow.

Week 3

Tue, Dec 17 CW – image of work completed in class

Today in class, I used Ai to change the color to greyscale. I made the shadow 100 percent black to make the contrast between the pet and the doghouse. I also made the dog bed darker, so we can differentiate the dog and the bed. I adjusted the exterior layer’s line weight to 0.0001, representing the cut layer.

Tue, Dec 17 HW – image of completed homework

Today, I traced the outline of negative space and found this complex because this image has too many details. It took me around 40 minutes to trace the outline. After doing the outline, I focused on the etch part; I used the pen tool for the eyes, nose, and beard. I plan to finish half of the etch layer in class tomorrow.

Week 2

Fri, Dec 13 CW – Image of work completed in class

Today in class, I worked on tracing the negative space and the etch layer. This panel’s prompt is a sleeping dog curled up in a kennel. I don’t have enough time to print this out today, so I will print it out by the next class.

Fri, Dec 13 HW – Image of completed homework

I redid the third and fourth AI images because I thought that there were not enough details in the image generated in Class. I changed the setting of the AI generator; I changed the level of detail and changed the subject to the scene so the AI could generate the background for me, as shown in the third picture.

Revised prompt 4: A sleeping dog curled up in a kennel

Wed, Dec 11 CW – Image of work completed in class

I misunderstood the homework because I thought we were only generating AI images and exploring AI, but we had to make each panel related to another. So today, in class, I generated three images, that revolve around the theme of animals.

Prompt 1: tree branches are attached to the outline, and a bird is standing on the tree branch

Prompt 2: In a forest, there is a tiger patrolling its own territory

Prompt 3: A puppy that is sleeping in his kennel

Wed, Dec 11 HW – Image of completed homework

Today, I double-checked with Mr. Brodie about the homework. I need to screenshot the AI image and record its prompt for the assignment.

Prompt 1: two people in a boat at sunset, Prompt 2: bored student in class, Prompt 3: beautiful dawn on the mountain

I let AI generate one image with background and subjects, one with only subject, and one with only background. I observed that AI tends to center the object in the middle like number 1 and number 2. And for number one, the background’s color is powerful but doesn’t overpower the subjects on the boat. For the second one, I noticed that the hair of the subject is obscure in terms of gender; it has both short and long hair and I think this is the disadvantage of using AI. AI also had a hard time drawing hands, especially fingers as shown in the second picture. The third one, AI uses layered shapes to create the mountain’s depth to demonstrate the perspective drawing. However, those three images’ lines are simple, which makes it hard to have its own style.

Mon, Dec 9 CW – Image of work completed in class

Today in class, I was working on generating AI images for the panels. I asked AI to generate the image of Greek heroes

Mon, Dec 9 HW – Image of completed homework

I deleted the intersected lines on the outline so the building could connect to the outline. I also sorted the layers by etch and cut parts, making it easier to work on the design. The last thing I did was finish the third floor of the temple. For tomorrow’s class, I will take some suggestions from Mr. Brodie and work on the fourth and fifth floors of the building.

Week 1

Thur, Dec 5 CW – image of completed homework

Today, I traced the windows, roofs, and columns. Mr. Brodie taught me how to erase the line so the building could connect the outline. I will start to work on adjusting the outlines of the building.

Tue, Dec 3 CW – image of work completed in class

Dec 3rd

I chose Chinese tourist attractions as my luminary panel design because I want everyone to appreciate China’s intricate buildings and unique landscapes. For the first part, I traced the outline of the building and filled the outline with black to indicate where should be cut, so layer 2 is for the cut part. After tracing the outline, I started working on the etched part on layers 3 and 4.
