Finished works for both projects

Renaissance

The Renaissance began in the 14th century in Florence, Italy, where it later spread to the rest of Europe in the 15th to 16th centuries. Classical Roman and Greek arts influenced it. Some of the notable figures from this movement include Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. The most distinct features of this art are its realism, with shading (using light and dark to make objects appear 3D) and realistic skin tones, and a neutral color palette. Using linear perspective creates a realistic space and makes the painting pop out. These paintings can be perceived as calm and balanced, with the body’s proportions perfect and not exaggerated (unlike modern art). This style of art promotes humanism, and works such as those shown above, The Creation of Adam and The Last Supper, are now priceless.

High Renaissance oil painting of a robotic figure, realistic body that showcases wires and components, balanced symmetrical composition of the body, good realistic lighting with shadow, natural color palette, very detailed, classical Roman architecture in the background with futuristic lasers and signs that depict a futuristic city, linear perspective, smooth brushwork that resembles works of Michelangelo, noon time with angles and floating spacecraft in the background sharing the sky.

Impressionism

Impressionism began in Paris, France, around 1860-1870. The word Impressionism comes from the painting that Claude Monet did called Impression, Sunrise in 1872. Leaders of this movement include Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Berthe Morisot. The invention of paint tubes allowed artists to paint outdoors, creating realism in their art, so the model for an artist’s painting could be the nature surrounding them. The art showcases bright colors with little to no shadowing. The art captures a snapshot of the painted surroundings. These works don’t capture the fine detail of art, but rather what is happening. Paintings were painted much faster than those from the Renaissance. The atmosphere of the art can be seen as lively and vivid with lots happening.

Impressionist oil painting of a group of individuals outdoors in a field, two families together enjoying lunch outside, a main character with a dark colored suit standing, with visible brushstrokes that showcases fast painting style of Claude Monet, textured paint, and natural sunlight that makes it look semi-realistic but has no shadows. Bright, vibrant color palette captures a certain moment, modern setting of the 1870’s, proper clothing, casual afternoon dress of an upper-class family, color technique of Claude Monet. Include his classic signature at the bottom right.

Surrealism

Began in Paris in the 1920s, developed by Andre Breton after the war; it was a reaction to the chaos the war caused. Primary artists include Salvador Dali, René Magritte, and Andre breton. The colors used were bright and contrasted each other to make the painting appear to pop out. The paintings themselves didn’t make sense, and it felt dreamlike. Usually, bizarre things would be painted with each other, and they would all be mashed together. These paintings were mysterious and unsettling because of the uncanny look of the color blend and the unusual shapes. This new style of painting used more shapes instead of realism and humanism in painting scenes, and people. These ideas were all thought of and original.

Surrealist oil painting of a skeleton with a pear covering his face, background objects, uncomprehensible, don’t make sense, random background shapes scattered and pushing to the edge or reality, asymmetrical and irrational composition, vast empty landscape with impossible perspective, floating and unexpected shapes, dramatic yet unnatural lighting, vivid contrasting colors against deep shadows, smooth hyper-real rendering mixed with spontaneous abstract textures, subconscious symbolism, psychological tension, inspired by Andre Breton, errie art that only contributes to fear.

Analysis

Renaissance

I like how the AI took the statue and merged it into a scene where the surroundings and background all blend smoothly. It combines the classical Roman structures I asked for as well as the neon signs of the futuristic city. It captures both moments at the same time and both pretty well. The sky looks to be clear with spaceships flying around. The buildings are nice with the detailed shadows that show deep realism. I asked the AI for angels to be floating with the spaceships, but I think it forgot about that. The centerpiece is inspired by the statue of David, but instead, I changed it to be a robot with detailed works, which the AI incorporated well. There aren’t really any errors that are noticeable, and if this were an actual patinting it could sit well inside a museum. The Renaissance art period showcases a unique style that combines classical Roman with Humanism, showing both styles well. The stroke of the brush is smooth, and it looks like it took forever to paint, unlike impressionism, which is aimed to capture the moment; this is to capture art and give a deep feeling with the palette of warm colors as well.

Impressionism

The AI followed the instructions pretty well, giving me two families of people with some children eating in the field, the references I had were from Claude Monet during the Impressionism period, which shows the AI followed the color palette pretty nicely and also signed the painting on the bottom right to sho its from Claude Monet. The AI also didn’t use any or, lightly used shadows to make the vivid colors really pop and make the painting stand out. The painting I generated, compared to the other two paintings I have from this time period, seems to be almost indistinguishable except for some details on the top left of the hills, which are slightly blurred. It doesn’t capture the fine details but shows the surroundings really well. Overall, the AI took the prompt well and gave me something I asked for, and really defined the thick brush strokes and the details of how the painting was painted swiftly outside to capture a scene like the Impressionist movement.

Surrealism

Surrealism and AI are by far the favorite topics. I feel like the AI understood the assignment very well by giving me a picture with the two reference images I asked for. The eerie sense I tried to portray was understood by the AI well, and it gave me a picture that combined a lot of the notes that Andre Breton wanted to show. The color palette the AI used was nice, as it kept the painting dark and grim. What I liked the most is I asked for it to generate random shapes in the back, which was supposed to be unsettling for the viewer. It gave me two versions, but ultimately I chose this one because the other one was far too unsettling with the organs and even more randomness in the background, which the viewer wouldn’t suspect. Out of the three styles I picked, I feel that the AI understood surrealism and my prompt the best, and gave me a work of art that I believed could be placed into a museum. This shows that surrealism could be understood even when it’s unsettling and could be drawn.

Continue to add flow and work on in class, finishing up the final shape builder work around the house, and going to add more elements of the flow.

Tue, Jan 6 HW – Image and description of completed homework

Converted to grayscale, and I also removed any free-hanging pieces that were floating around in the middle of the piece. Currently working on the lettering design (Chinese characters) and will add more artwork in class.

Wed, Dec 17 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

I redid my design because I thought a center background would help a lot and I am working ot cutout all the frames. I will put it in grayscale for HW and continue working on it during break. Have a good break!

Wed, Dec 17 HW – Image and description of completed homework

I wanted to incorporate my culture of Chinese New Year into my desing for the luminary project. Below I attached a few reference images for my sketch. I want to use some color in the final design after all the cutout becuase one of the most important parts of Chinese New Year is the color red being featured. The animal I have picked out of the twelve is the dragon because my mom’s new year animal (out of 12) is the dragon. I have also written common wishing well phrases in simplified Chinese that is common to see during the New Year aswell. I chose this for my project because Chinese New Year is coming up and it is very important to my culture so I want to find the best way to incorporate it into my design. To incorporate my design into four pannels I want to spread the dragon and make it float across the four, and add text for each pannel and seperate imagery aswell.

Mon, Dec 15 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

I started to add AI images ot my design, and I am trimming the dragon’s boarders to make it flow through all the frames continuously. I also added a few lamps on the other frame and, I will continue to finish trimming the dragon next class.

Thu, Dec 11 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

I finished the print for my laser-cut project and sketched with more detail for my Chinese New Year theme. I will define the negative spaces more next class and continue to work on my sketch then, move onto Adobe to start the process there.

Thu, Dec 11 HW – Image and description of completed homework

I finished the laser cut (waiting to cut during class), so I started working on the next project by sketching out one of the themes I would like to incorporate into my design.

Tues, Dec 9 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

Finished all the layers needed: through cut, edging, and raster layers. Ready to print and, I am moving onto the next project, where I am thinking of ideas and generating 2-3 different themes to sketch.

Tues, Dec 9 HW – Image and description of completed homework

Added and refined lines for the negative space cutout. Reworked some of the lines that I already put in during class and changed the remaining negative lines from before to 0.0001pt stroke and corrected their positioning.

Thu, Dec 6 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

Finished the image by creating the second layer and currently working on the lines for the negative space cutout. I am using the pen tool to trace out my image.

Sat, Dec 6 HW – Image and description of completed homework

Cleaned up the shades I used for my figure and finally figured out how to get rid of sublayers by dragging everything, which was separate into one layer. I could easily duplicate now and create the lines needed over my original work.

Thu, Dec 4 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

I created image that I wanted to use with the vector generator, but there was an issue with the image being on sublayers. I know how to create the outlines needed for the next step, but first to figure out the issue.

Tue, Dec 2 CW – Image and description of completed classwork

I outlined the vector image and highlighted the negative spaces with the pen tool in green lines.
