Cubism

Use inconsistent geometric shapes and compose a two dimensional shape of a head. Include eyes and nose by bold, rough straight lines. Distort the facial features. The shapes should have definite borderlines. Use various colors and the brush stroke needs to be rough and visible.

Pop Art

Generate a comic style illustration of a blonde American woman from the 1950s. Include bold black outlines and vibrant colors with high contrast. Precise details should be neglected. Make sure the face of the woman fills up the majority of the illustration. That background should be painted with one color.

Impressionism

Generate a painting of people near a pond of 19th century France by using very subtle outlines and visible brushstrokes that illustrate the natural light of the scene. Small details like leaves or facial features should not be definite. Use loose, and rapid brushstrokes with dabs of unblended color and use more cooler toned colors than warm colors

Cubism

Cubism first emerged in Paris in the early 20th century and its creation was primarily led by influential figures like Pablo Picasso and Georges Barque. Cubism is significantly associated with fractured geometric shapes like cubes, cylinders, and rectangles, representing multiple perspectives simultaneously on a two-dimensional surface. Cubism, as a major shift in modern art, rejected traditional perspectives and realistic representation such as the conventional concept that art should imitate nature. In fact, cubist artists aimed to produce emotionally resonant pieces that pushed against traditional ideas of form and aesthetic beauty. Until 1910, Cubist artists mostly still depicted recognizable figures, although they were represented by fragmented pieces reassembled in abstracted form. This abstract aspect of Cubism was advanced by Picasso and Baroque during the early 1910s establishing the style of Analytic Cubism. Many painters of the time adopted cubism into their art and Cubism also exerted a profound influence on sculpture and architecture.

Pop Art

Pop art emerged in the mid-1950s, primarily in Britain and the US, and it is known for imitating the distinctive style of popular and mass culture like advertising, comic books, and everyday objects. The Pop Art movement marked a pivotal point in modern art as crisp, clearly defined forms and recognizable imagery were recognized. Pop artists often used ordinary, impersonal subjects to counter subjective symbolism and the seriousness of Abstract Expression. Major influential figures include Andy Warhol, renowned for his Campbell’s Soup cans and Marilyn Monroe silkscreens and Roy Lichtenstein, for his comic-inspired works and Ben-Day dot technique. Pop Art is defined by its distinctive use of vibrant colors, bold outlines, repetitive motifs, and a graphic aesthetic reminiscent of print media. Its uniqueness is also influenced by the fact that pop art rejects the portrayal of unique objects. Rather than pursuing originality, Pop artists adopted everyday popular culture as their repetitive motif. The movement aimed to criticize consumerism by its ironic incorporation of ubiquitous everyday objects and blunt imagery.

Impressionism

Impressionism, a 19th century art movement, emerged in France as it rejected the conventional portrayal of historical or mythological themes in art. It is primarily characterized by visible brushstrokes, capturing of light, and depiction of modern everyday life. Impressionist artists moved away from the traditional academic art style as they used variance of colors to define forms instead of definite black outlines. The illustrations of modern life captured transient moments focusing on the movement of the objects and the outdoor light. Impressionism initially received harsh criticism as it was seen as a derogatory label. Artists who positioned themselves beyond the official Salon as impressionists held their own group exhibitions starting from their first exhibition of 1874 in Paris. This group of independent artists was founded by renowned artists such as Claude Monet and Edgar Degas. Claude Monet’s Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874, initiated the name of the Impressionist movement when it was condemned by Louis Leroy who commented that Monet’s painting was merely an “impression” rather than a completed work.

I have been looking up reference photos and articles during class to get a better understanding on modernism so I can start writing my paragraphs.

Thur, Nov 13 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-11-13

I had added a couple of missing lines in the through cut layers for the bottom and middle layer. I was able to print my botton layer during consult on Wednesday, but the outer layer was not cut even after changing the stoke settings. I will try to resolve this issue by creating another layer or using another tool to adjust the size of the panel.

Thur, Nov 13 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-11-13

Tue, Nov 4 HW – image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-11-4

I printed my third panel and sanded all my three panels. I was able to start attaching paper to the back of one of my panels. I will resume this work during class next week and I will try to print my last panel on Sunday. I learned how sanding increases the contrast when done on wood.

Fri, Oct 31 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-31

Some parts of my Mandela designs were not saved(fourth and fifth layer) so I focused on connecting the shaped to the edges with secure links instead of adding complex layers. I will try to work on more layers if time permits for detailed shapes.

Fri, Oct 31 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-31

I was able to print my third panel during class the but the contrast was not visible. I am aiming to reprint the panel during class on Friday (or Sunday). I will try to simplify my Mandela design for homework because I think I have some unnecessary layers.

Wed, Oct 29 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-29

For homework, I added another layer on top of my top layer and constructed a boarder shape for my top layer. I was able to connect my bottom layer to the edges of the design with more secure shape. I am aiming to print my luminary project panel during class on Wednesday.

Wed, Oct 29 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-29

I added another layer to separate small details from the bigger shapes and create an overlapping effect. I had figured out a way to connect the middle layer to the edges but there are still work to be done in order to strengthen the link for the top layer. I will finish printing my luminary project during class next week.

Thur, Oct 23 CW – image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-23

I added more details to my Mandela design and I am aiming to add more layers during class. I also have to work on connecting my top layer to the edges of the design and securing the connection for my botton layer because it is held together by a very thin piece that is likely to break when printed.

Thur, Oct 23 HW – image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-23

Based on the basic concept of layered Mandela that I learned through the homework assignment, I redesigned my first three layers with more complex shapes. For homework, I will work on connecting my shapes to the edges of my design.

Tue, Oct 21 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-21

I started my layered Mandela design for homework and was able to structure a base for further details. I aim to add more details during class and edit shapes that are off center. I will also consider adding more layers for a more complex composition.

Tue, Oct 21 HW – image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-21

I was able to complete two adjacent panels during class today. I had my etching printed from last class, but because the file was not saved, I had to re-print the entire thing. The outer boarder is slightly off due to an unknwon reason. I will work on my Mandela project for homework.

Fri, Oct 17 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-17

For homework, I completed the Mandela tutorial with the video. I was able to discover and explore new tools such as the scissor tool and the rotation tool with command D. During class, I will continue printing my second panel and hopefully start printing my third panel.

Fri, Oct 17 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-17

Wed, Oct 15 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-15

I was able to finish the through cut layer for my last panel and I have all my panels ready for the laser cutter. I will start working on the Mandela project during class after printing.

Wed, Oct 15 HW – Image and description of completed homework- HWDueDate 2025-10-15

I was able to use the laser cutter for my second panel but my through cut layer was incorrectly placed and I was able to start re-printing my second panel by the end of class. I was not able to get to my through cut layer because time didn’t permit. I will finish printing my second and third panel during next class.

Mon, Oct 13 CW – Image and description of completed homework- CWDueDate 2025-10-13

I was able to finalize my design for the fourth panel and add detailed line work for it. I will work on the laser cutter during class and further edit my last panel so it can also be printed by class on Wednesday or consult on Tuesday. The through cut layer will also be edited in to prevent any neglected spaces.

Mon, Oct 13 HW – Image and description of completed homework- HWDueDate 2025-10-13

I was able to print my first panel and I will get my other two(three of possible) over the weekend. I will also have my last design finalized and ready for the laser cutter by next class. I created separate art boards for each of my designs which made the printing process much easier to track.

Thur, Oct 9 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-9

I developed a basic layout for my last panel. It still needs a lot of revision and I will work on this for homework since I need class time for my prints. I will try to minimize the complex lines and replace them with solid shapes. I aim to print at least one of my panel during class time on Thursday.

Thur, Oct 9 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-9

I was able to get a test print during class but could not get my through cut layer because time did not permit. I found out an error in my vector shapes since some of the shapes did not print. I will try to resolve this error before my final print either during consult or next class.

Tue, Oct 7 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-7

I finalized my design for my third panel and completed the through cut layer for it. However, since it contains complex negative spaces, I will be double checking before my test print during class on Tuesday. I will focus on confirming the composition of the shaded areas for the central figure from my test print.

Tue, Oct 7 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-7

I added some detailed vector shapes for my third panel during class today. I also edited my line work based on the additional shapes. I try to cut my panels during next class and I will also work on finalizing my panels for the final cut out for homework.

Sat, Oct 4 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-4

I transformed some line work to my etching layer because I thought it would come out to be too thin on the actual print. I also worked on the line work for the third panel and edited some contrast in general. I will try to print my first two panels during class on Saturday.

Sat, Oct 4 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-4

I was able to cut out a test print from my first panel and worked on increasing the contrast and transforming some shapes from my vector layer to my etching layer because it turned out to be too thin. I will continue working on increasing the contrast for other panels and finalize the designs for my last two panels before class on Saturday.

Wed, Oct 1 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-1

I had completed marking the negative space boundaries for my two adjacent panels including all the detailed shapes. I also finalized my composition and small details for my second panel(third from left) to maximize the contrast and minimize complex shapes as my first panel is composed mostly of complex vector shapes. I am aiming to print my first and second panel during class on Wednesday.

Wed, Oct 1 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-1

I added detailed vector shapes for my third panel and made some progress on the through cut layer for my second panel. I will finalized my vector shapes for my second and third panel by next class for home work. Maximizing the contrast was very challenging for the third panel because of the complex shapes; therefore, I will also plan to clarify the boundaries using the line work layer.

Mon, Sept 29 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-29

I finalized my line work and the through cut layer for my first two panels and started to build the basic vector shapes for the third panel. I was trying to maximize the contrast within the vector shapes of the flowers which I will also continue working on. Figuring out the composition based on the new frame is also a major task to be done this week as well as completing the line work and the through cut layer.

Mon, Sep 29 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-29

I was able to add detailed line work for the first panel and finalize the contrast for the flower and the torso. I will continue to work on it over the weekend focusing on the third panel and adding detailed vector shapes/line work. I also tried generating images for the torso but ended up using my original sketch because I was not able to generate an appropriate image for the intended design.

Thur, Sept 25 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-25

I added the basic vector shapes for the first panel(tone/contrast not finalized yet) and added more precise line work. I tried generating vector images for the cranes but ended up tracing my own artwork since I wasn’t able to get images that match my theme. I also added the vector though cut layer and was able to get some minor work done. I will continue to work on my vector shapes and the negative spaces and start finalizing my contrast.

Thur, Sept 25 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-25

I transformed my sketches into Illustrator and completed the line work for the fist design(left) and started creating vector shapes for my third panel(right). I also tried applying an oval frame to the designs to test if it works out and by next class I will finalize my composition and continue working on the vector/line work for the designs I have so far. I discovered that the complex patterns are much easier to create and combine unsing the pathfinder tool.

Tue, Sept 23 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-23

I finalized my design for the panels. I will aim to figure out the tone variation and display to maximize the contrast. I also tried to simplify the complex lines and clarify the lines/shapes for it be transformed into a vector format.

Tue, Sept 23 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-23

I was not able to complete my thumbnail sketch during class time but was able to solidify and visualize my theme. I am planing to work on my thumbnail sketches and complete it before class next week.

Sat, Sept 20 CW – Image and description of completed homework. – CWDueDate 2025-9-20

“Sublime orientalism” represents an aesthetic that displays surreal and unsettling visuals through the lens of orientalism, constructing a characteristic that is both dreamlike and layered with cultural resonance. This theme connects with me because surrealism has been a thread for my artistic inquiries for a long time. In addition, my Asian origin also determines my engagement with such visual lexicons, despite my nationality. In addition, the repetitive imageries of nature within this theme resonate with my personal values, since nature is one of my main sources of inspiration. To effectively display this theme onto four panels, I will try to arrange my design within oval frames that emphasize the classical value of orientalism while also softening the surreal imagery. The panels could also share a continuous element that flows across them or include recurring symbols with a shared theme that ties the composition together both conceptually and visually.

Sat, Sept 20 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-20

I was able to complete the assignment by printing out my final result. I discovered the printer settings for different layers/parts of the printing process and how the power varies base on the type of the print.

Thur, Sept 18 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-18

As I was finalizing my vector shapes by editing the contrast, I discovered an error with my line work: some of them were overlapping with the negative space. Since all of my line work was connected into a single line, I had trouble making small edits to resolve this issue and ended up redoing all my line work(not visible). I reshaped some of the vector shapes near the boarder between the owl and the flame behind it so it could directly connect and reserve space for clear line work. I also added some line work to clarify the boarder between the overlapping parts of the wings and the window.

Thur, Sept 18 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-18

I completed my line work(not visible; visible on the layer preview: bule- line work, red- negative space) during class which was very time consuming because I was not able to group my vector shapes to create a single stroke. I had to trace every shape in order to create a clear boarder which I later converted to 0.0001. I was able to review how to use the laser cutter properly during the demo.

Mon, Sept 15 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-15

For homework, I focused on increasing the contrast and minimizing complex shapes which I will need to work more on during class. I also traced around the negative space which decreased since I expanded the central figure to increase the overlapping spaces.

Mon, Sept 15 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-15

I mostly focused on generating an interesting image and simplifying overly complex lines. The contrast still has to be higher and I am looking forward to work on that for homework. I learned how the laser cutter function based on the contrast and why it is important to implement clear lines and boundaries for a cut out with clear outlines. I will also try to polish the negative space to increase the overall clarity.

Thur, Sept 11 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-11

Thur, Sept 11 HW – Image and description of completed homework- HWDueDate 2025-9-11

I was not able to get work done during class time because my had to go through an updating process for me to properly generate images. I was able to learn from the demos and from my classmates on how the laser cutter functions based on the contrast and the colors. I will be critical for me to be aware of my negative spaces and boarder lines as I work on this project.
