Final AI art history
Surrealism:

AI generated image Example surrealism painting
For the AI image, I asked AI to make the people at the cafe clocks and have clocks sitting at tables, not have a large clock above each of the people. I never asked ai for there to be people or clouds or foliage in the background. In real surrealism paintings artists are able to be creative and express exactly what they want, AI cannot do that. Real artists can also show depth a lot better than the AI can. My analysis is that AI has a very difficult time making images that aren’t natural that are common in surrealism. On the image on the right we can see that everywhere you look is a surprise. AI is unable to make something unnatural without extensive, page long, prompts that tell it exactly what to do. Even then it still doesn’t work super well. I asked AI again this time using a very specific prompt.
Make a beach landscape with the water line breaking horizontally across the page. Have water in the front and sand in the back so water is the foreground and sand and what looks like land in the background. On the beach there should be horses on either side facing towards each other. For both of the horses I want them to have 3 legs and wear red boots. In between the two horses on the beach there is an old style TV with 3 antennas sticking up. On each of the antennas there is a parrot. One parrot is green, the other is red, and the other is black. The parrots do not have any other features; they are all solid colors. Behind this scene on the beach is a low forest and a thunderstorm. Have 3 lighting strikes on each 3rd of the page. The image represents 20th century surrealism and has many saturated tones to incorporate depth into the image.
After all that description and detail, this is what the AI came out with
As we can see, the AI fulfilled none of the requirements I’ve outlined, proving AI is very bad at creating unnatural scenes as it has been trained not to.
Renaissance Art:

AI’s Image Example Renaissance painting
The ai created this image with very similar techniques to how renaissance paintings were. This is because scenes in renaissance artwork are a lot easier to create. It used good depth and tones, however I asked for the man in the robe to be a religious figure and the AI was not able to do that. I also did not ask for the image to be in a circle. Overall, even though it looks like AI, it used a lot of the same techniques and if the details were maxed out I think it could look very similar to renaissance artwork. AI also tends to use larger shapes which is also why it looks fake.
Cubism:

AI image Example Cubism Artwork
I thought AI would be able to replicate cubism very well since it is made of many simple shapes that should be easy for a computer to do. Instead, AI seems to make the same style of images each time. It did make it in the gray scale which I asked it to. The shapes the AI made were too small to be considered cubism, the shapes don’t represent anything else like they do in authentic work.

Renaissance Art:
Renaissance art emerged in the 14th century in Europe and continued through the 17th century. Key artists included Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, though there were many other influential artists their artwork followed the same theme. Most paintings used oil paint and depicted humans in religious settings from the bible. A lot of artwork was focused on religion and humanism. Many important techniques were born in the renaissance like proportion, use of depth, blurring lines and tone, and using depth to add a 3 dimensional appearance to 2d artwork.
The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. This painting represents renaissance artwork very well because it shows the techniques that were being used at the time like depth, the painting is a representation of the last supper in the bible since a lot of paintings were tied to religious scenes and themes.
Cubism:
Cubism is an early-20th-century avant-garde art movement which began in Paris. It revolutionized painting and the visual arts. Cubist subjects are often broken up and reassembled to be viewed from different perspectives. Cubism is an art form that became popular in the 20th century and is considered highly influential and revolutionized art. Key artists include Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. A lot of artwork was made to break classic styles and make the art more unique. Techniques include making normal objects and breaking them into simple geometric shapes like squares and triangles. Cubism has also influenced other art forms like sculpture and architecture.

By Pablo Picasso By Diego Rivera
Both of these pieces of artwork represent cubism well because both works are depicting humans but they are not using complex shapes. Instead the artists used many simple shapes and made them appear to be something else.
Surrealism:
Surrealism first developed in Europe after world war 1. Artists wanted to create art from the “unconscious mind” and make work that doesn’t seem real or is from a dream. Surrealists group assembled and created surreal style artwork. The goal of their artwork was to make something unnatural and dream-like. Many rules could be broken and a great example of this is “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” By René Magritte. Key artists who influenced Surrealism were Guillaume Apollinaire and André Breton, who both led Surrealism manifestos.

By René Magritte By Yvez Tanguy
Both of these works are surrealist works because they break artistic norms. On the left it shows what is clearly a pipe but the words in french translate to “this is not a pipe.” On the left is a structure made from different shapes that is unnatural and won’t be seen in any other styles of art.

Cleaned up linework for splashing water underneath the trout on the 2nd slide.
Tue, Oct 7 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-7

Worked on saturation for each slide to male colors pop more. Then i simplified lines on the second slide and did the negative space for the second slide again since it wasn’t lined up with the linework. All of my slides are completed. I also removed the inner lines on the frame layer.
Tue, Oct 7 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-7

For homework i edited the saturation for the 4th panel which i test printed in class. I want more differential between the colors when it prints.
Week 4
Sat, Oct 4 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-4

In class i test printed a few more pannels. Below is the one i printed last class and I changed the settings to now it is the one on the right. I also test printed the 4th pannel which is the one on the left. for homwrok I’m going to edit the saturation for the pannel on the left so it pops more when printed.
Sat, Oct 4 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-4

Attached clouds to frame and added negative space to surround it, touched up on details.
Wed, Oct 1 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-1

I went in and Cleaned up the lines on the fins of the fish. During my test print the lines on the fins were messy. I cleaned them up to make it safer too. I also re centered artwork on the second artboard which took a while.
Wed, Oct 1 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-1

Finished 3rd artboard and set all lines to 0.001. Changed contrast of 1st and second artboards. Ill be able to print next class.

I used the pen tool to create the negative space vector through cuts
Week 3
Thur, Sept 25 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-25

In class I put the lines (vector cuts) and rasters on seperate layers. after that I did linework for the slides except the fishing rod. I made the negative space for the landscaope scene and attached the cloud to the side. I simplified linework on each of the fish. The piece on top of the 3rd and 4th slides is the negative space I made for the 4th slide.
Thur, Sept 25 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-25

For homework I generated new fish for 2 of the slides because I didn’t like the original ones. I converted them to grey scale and resized them to fit the rectangle. I also did some linework for the waterfall and removed uneeded raster images on the new slides.
Tue, Sept 23 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-23

During class I made a illustrator file for my artwork. I used generative fill to make my artwork then i edited it a bit and converted it to grayscale. Im doing a fish themed piece so during class I had to crop them so they would fit the rectangle. On the 3rd slide I used 2 generative fills. I removed the backround on each of them to use as negative space.
Tue, Sept 23 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-23

For homwork I sketched the fishing design in more detail and it is what I will be doing for my final luminary design.
Week 2
Sat, Sept 20 CW – Image and description of completed homework. – CWDueDate 2025-9-20

In class I sketched two possible themes for my luminary design. On the top is a fishing themed design and the bottom is winter themed.
Sat, Sept 20 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-20
Fishing themed
Snow/Skiing themed
Food themed
The ultimate theme I’m choosing is going to be a fishing themed luminary design. One side will feature a fishing rod and reel while the other sides will feature the “big three” trout to catch. Brookie Brown and Rainbow. I go fly fishing a lot and I think it is a theme that could go across well with my luminary design.
Thur, Sept 18 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-18

I printed my design in class and also made the layer for the negative space vector through cuts with the pen tool. During class I uploaded to the hard drive and finished my print

I continued on the linework for my forest scene. I’m just about finished simplifying the lines and making them neat and ready to print. Next thing to do is get rid of the clouds or attach them to the window frame. I also changed some of the ground shapes to further simplify the cut. Trying to make as much of the ground raster as possible.
Mon, Sept 15 HW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-15

I worked on linework and put together the layers of the linework and raster shapes for the final part. Looking to print in class and see how it turns out. I also did some linework on the frame and Im seeing how I can integrate the two.
Mon, Sept 15 CW- Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-15

This is the CW for 9/15, the work above is the HW. (They were mixed up) I used class time to continue line work. I also deleted the clouds because it would be impossible to cut in the negative space. I merged colors in the raster object too and I had to draw some lines on the right trees to help simplify the artwork.
Week 1
Thur, Sept 11 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-11

I used a new layer to work on the linework for the forest. I went in with the general selection tool to remove specific lines so it will look better on the print. Here, the linework is about 50% done and I’ll complete the rest for homework. i removed a lot of the crowded lines to make the overall image look cleaner when I bring the raster shapes back.

Thur, Sept 11 HW – Image and description of completed homework- HWDueDate 2025-9-11

I turned the layer with the fram to non-visible so I could work on the generated forest. I went into the raster shapes and changes the colors of them individually. I made each a lot darker and some lighter to add my own creative approach. I changes the clouds from being white to being black because I think it goes with the style better. I also added some shapes on the bottom where i felt it needed it and I made the tree trunks a little thicker.
Tue, Sept 9 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-9

I used the generate shape tool to generate a forest within the 3rd frame. after that I changed the color pallete to all gray scale. I’ve started going in one by one and changing the grays darker to make it look more saturated. I’ve started by changing the trunks of the trees to black.
