Watkins: Layered Mandala – Adobe Illustrator Tutorial

  1. Create a new file – 11.5″ x 11.5″
  2. CMYK Color Mode
  3. Modified Essentials Classic Workspace
  1. Create Guides Layer
  2. Create a 11.5″ x 11.5″ square with no fill
  3. Center square on Artboard with Transform Tool
  1. Show Rulers – Command R
  2. Turn on Smart Guides – Command U
  3. With square selected, drag guides to center
  1. Select the square
  2. Command 5 – turns square into its own set of guides with center point
  3. Lock the Guide layer
  4. Create new Swatches layers
  1. Create a color swatch for each layer in your mandala
  2. No stroke
  3. 25% grey, 50% grey, and 90% grey fill
  1. Swap Fill and Stroke (Shift X)
  1. Create copies
  2. Align Stroke to Inside
  1. Create more copies
  2. Align Stroke to Outside

  1. Create ellipse
  2. Change color with eyedropper to 25% grey
  1. Select Pen Tool and Option Click to convert the points
  1. Select Objects
  2. Command C – Copy
  3. Lock the Top Layer
  4. Unlock and select the Middle Layer
  5. Command F – Paste in Front
  6. Use the Eyedropper to change color to 50% grey
  7. Increase the stroke weight
  1. Lock the Middle Layer
  2. Unlock and select the Bottom Layer
  3. Command F – Paste in Front
  4. Use the Eyedropper to change color to 90% grey
  5. Increase the stroke weight

Command J – to join points

Add a frame on each layer using stroke inside swatch

Check each layer to make sure objects are connected

Bottom Layer

Add more detail on the various layers.

Make sure everything is connected

Command Y – Toggle to Outline View

Everything has been merged together and ready for the laser cutter
