I did a lot of modifications to my panels. Included in these changes was the careful consideration of color and weight; I made the shapes lighter so they are not burnt when I print them, ensuring that they retain their intended integrity during the printing process. Furthermore, I added more negative space, which not only enhances the visual appeal but also allows the viewer to appreciate the shapes without overwhelming them. Adjusting printer settings was another crucial step I took, as finding the right balance between power and speed is essential for achieving good results. Additionally, I added more etching to make the shapes clearer, creating a more defined and polished look. Unfortunately, the laser cutter wasn’t working properly, so I will have to return to improve my designs further and fully realize my vision.

I completed the etching for all my panels, taking great care to ensure each design was detailed, and then I started tracing out the negative space for all my panels. And increased contrast between different shapes, ready to print.

Tue, Feb 18 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I used the tracing tool to make the image generated by mid-journey a vector, which allowed me to refine the edges and enhance the overall quality of the design. After transforming the image, I carefully laid out the logos deliberately, ensuring they would create a visually pleasing composition around the person. This not only added depth to my project but also made the final piece more engaging and professional in appearance, effectively highlighting the central figure while complementing the overall theme with a variety of logos that represent different aspects of the subject’s interests and achievements.

Week 9
Fri, Feb 14 CW – Image of work completed in class

Since we are working with AI in design, I wanted to explore AI outside of Adobe since I felt like Adobe AI could not capture my ideas, and drawing everything by hand is too time-consuming. I first went on chat GPT to give me ideas but I wasn’t the central figure of the last panel since I needed inspiration. It gave me many many ideas which I really liked and then I hopped onto Midjourney. I absolutely loved it, the images it generated really captured my ideas. I kept experimenting with different keywords and adding more and more details I wanted into the instructions. I think I have generated at least 100 pictures and I picked out some of the ones I really liked I will test them out on the background to see which ones worked the best.

Fri, Feb 14 HW – Image of completed homework
For homework, I finished the etching for the third panel, which features the heart, the Banksy signature, and the iconic images of the girl and the man. This panel represents the street art aspect of street culture, capturing the emotions and stories often portrayed on urban walls. I picked Banksy because he is one of the most famous artists who has had a huge impact on the world, using his art to convey powerful messages about societal issues, politics, and human rights. Moreover, I will also have to adjust the grayscale colors so the whole piece will fit better, ensuring that the contrasts enhance the cohesiveness of the artwork.

Wed, Feb 12 CW – Image of work completed in class
In class today, I started to work on the etching of the third panel, which has been an exciting challenge for me. I really like the composition of the third panel because I think the black and white will create a striking and popping contrast for the panel, enhancing the overall impact. The boldness of the black against the crispness of the white adds a layer of depth. I can already envision how it will stand out in the final display, making it a captivating piece that speaks about the themes I am exploring.

Wed, Feb 12 HW – Image of completed homework

I incorporated this famous wave painting into the skateboard panel because I realized that it was a little empty, which detracted from the overall visual appeal. The dynamic movement of the wave added more sense of fast movement to the skateboarder’s action. However, I wanted to still keep the bottom empty to create the “flying in the air” effect for the skateboarder, emphasizing the sense of freedom and exhilaration that comes with performing tricks. I also finished the skateboarder’s hair and face.

Mon, Feb 10 CW – Image of work completed in class
In class, I finished the etching for the skateboarder’s shirt, creating shadows and highlights, complementing the movement.

Mon, Feb 10 HW – Image of completed homework
For homework, I modified my design in multiple ways. Firstly, it took me a long time to figure out how to move my design onto the right template without messing up the arranged layers. It took a long time but it was the only thing I could do. I also separated the panels since my design involved the figures leaping out of the frame so I needed more space. In addition, I started adding the etching for the second panel. It also took me a long time since I’m doing it by hand and it’s very hard to get the shadows and the highlights right since my image was very expressive.

Week 8
Fri, Feb 7 CW – image of work completed in class
In class today, I worked on the negative spaces in my project and generated a rose bush pattern beneath the dancing guy, to create a visually appealing panel that feels more “layerful” and dynamic. As I was refining my design, I stumbled upon an issue: I had mistakenly used the wrong template for my panels. This error meant that the panels did not fit together properly. Recognizing this problem, I made a note to address it during my homework session, where I will carefully correct template options and ensure that the elements of my project align seamlessly.

Fri, Feb 7 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I organized the other panels and was ready to trace the negative space, which had become a crucial aspect of my project. I figured I maybe wanted to put flower bushes in the negative space, considering how their organic shapes could contrast with the structured elements surrounding them. Since I didn’t know what patterns could be connected and create the airy effect I envisioned, I debated various floral arrangements that could weave throughout the design, adding depth and texture. On the last panel, I would probably put a figure in front of the logos, as I believed this would create a focal point and make the whole composition work.

Thur, Feb 5 CW – image of work completed in class
In class today, I started composing the references for my last two panels so they fit nicely and was connected to the frame, ensuring that the overall aesthetic was visually appealing. As I arranged the elements, I considered how each reference would interact with the others, adding depth to my project.

Wed, Feb 5 HW – image of completed homework
I finished tracing out the negative space for the first two panels, carefully considering the composition and balance of elements within each design. As I drew, I was mindful of how the shapes would interact with one another, ensuring that the negative space would enhance the overall visual impact.

Week 7
Wed, Jan 29 CW – Image of work completed in class
In today’s class, I started tracing the negative space for the first two panels, considering how each element would interact with the overall composition. Since the AI couldn’t generate the big dramatic perspective picture I needed, I traced the figure for the second panel myself, ensuring that it had the depth and movement I envisioned. While working on these details, I had a new idea; for the first panel, I wanted to incorporate patterns inside the negative space beneath the person. This allows the figure to serve as a splitting line between the alley buildings and the vibrant patterns below. I believe that this design would add a new layer to the artwork while filling up some of the negative space effectively.

Wed, Jan 29 HW – Image of completed homework
For my homework, I utilized the reference I found and generated this fascinating AI image, which I then modified to create multiple intriguing versions. I wanted the guy to fill up the panel to create a popping visual effect.

Mon, Jan 27 CW – Image of work completed in class
I generated a new theme for my luminary panels and found my references. The them of my luminary will be: street culture. My panels will demonstrate the different parts of it by combining different elements.
The first panel will be about street dance, as seen in the references. There will be a street dancer in a dead end alley way with kids peering over the wall.

The border of the panel will be the walls of the alleyway.

The second block will be about skateboarding. I wanted to create a very strong visual image, so there will be a skateboarder with dramatic perspective as seen in these references. I want them to be popping out from the frame to create an even more dramatic effect.

The third panel will be about street art, featuring the work from Banksy as seen in these references.

The fourth panel will be about streetwear as it is also an important part of street culture. On this panel, I want to make the collage of iconic brands the background with a person posing in front wearing an iconic outfit. Reference photos seen as below:

Mon, Jan 27 HW – Image of completed homework
For homework today, I modified the images so that they would have simpler shapes, which helped to create a more defined appearance, ultimately making the panels more clear and pleasing to the viewer. This not only enhanced the overall aesthetics but also allowed for a clearer demonstration of the features of the architecture, showing its unique characteristics. By deleting unnecessary details, each architectural element became more prominent.

Week 6
Thur, Jan 23 CW – image of work completed in class

Today, I completed the Larry pencil box project, printed out my improved panels which had a lot more contrast and clear images. I sanded down the panels and glued them together. Through this project, I learned a lot about the printers, and how to adjust the settings to create effects I am happy with.
Thur, Jan 23 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I converted my images to grayscale and started tracing out the negative spaces with careful precision, ensuring that each contour was meticulously defined. This process not only helped me appreciate the intricate details within the images but also allowed me to focus on the composition of light and shadow. Additionally, I increased the grayscale contrast of my Larry pencil box panels, enhancing the visual impact of the artwork. I spent extra time adjusting the levels to create a more dynamic range of tones, which brought depth to the panels and made the subtle nuances of the design stand out prominently.

Tue, Jan 21 CW – image of work completed in class
I have done multiple test prints for my panels with different settings. Most of the time, my vector etching burnt the engravings, so I learned that I needed to increase the speed and lower the power. I was also unsatisfied with the contrast of the images, the light image didn’t match with the vector etching. The contrast was so low that I could not see the pictures clearly, so I increased the contrast of the grayscale in illustrator.

Tue, Jan 21 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I fixed my vector etching layer since there were too much details the last time i ran the print.

Week 5
Fri, Jan 17 CW – image of work completed in class
In class today, I decided on the themes for my four panels. Mountain and water, a little tower, neon sign filled ally way of Hongkong, and the city of Shanghai. I also added another AI generated image onto the main one, I added each city/regions’ flower onto the panel on the corners so they can connect the image to the border while adding more details to each panel.

Fri, Jan 17 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I worked on my luminary panels. I have decided that my theme for the panels will be the architecture of China, combining the modern and the traditional. I found a lot of reference photos and used them to generate images inside the template. I have generated different versions of three panels so far and will continue to decide on them in class.

Wed, Jan 15 CW – image of work completed in class
For class today, I didn’t get a chance to print so I went back and worked on my luminary. I added an etching layer since we only carved out the negative space before so we didn’t have any patterns inside the positive space. I also added vector etching for the window/lights of the buildings onto a separate layer. I also the gradient to include the lit up effect of buildings at night.

Wed, Jan 15 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I made a lot of modifications to my panels. Firstly, I increased the grayscale contrast of the etching layer, for example, I changed some of the grayscale values of the Christmas tree since both of the two prints I made last class were either too dark or too light meaning that more contrast between black or white would make the image clearer. Secondly, I added a lot of vector etching details to my image. I experienced a mistake when moving shapes from the etch layer directly to the vector etch layer since the shapes would no longer exist on the etching layer. In order to have the shape on both layers, I had to copy and paste into the vector etching layer. I did the same for the two other panels.

I am ready to print in class and make any modifications necessary.
Mon, Jan 13 CW – image of work completed in class
In class today, I test printed all my panels and got feedback from Mr. Brodie. I did some reflection on this project. I found that the tempo of the project had ben bothering me, waiting in line to print and having ai generate the images. I have to admit that sometimes, I thought maybe we didn’t need this long for this project so a lot of the times I felt like I was making unnecessary or changes which were unnoticeable, which made me more hesitant to make changes to my panels. However, during class today I realized that there were a lot of modifications I could make after receiving feedback and I can continue to improve my panels, by adding more details or etching that makes my panels stand out more.
Mon, Jan 13 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I went to consult and printed out the two panels so I can fix whatever error and make some final adjustments in class.

Week 4
Thur, Jan 9 CW – image of work completed in class
For class today, I added details and contrast to my panels and added some vector etches. All my panels are ready to print however, I didn’t get time to print so I will come back and print for Friday consultation time.

Thur, Jan 9 HW – image of completed homework
For homework, I rearranged all my layers and increased contrast of the greyscales. Now I am ready to print out all my panels in class.

Tue, Jan 7 CW – image of work completed in class
In class, I fixed and reorganized my layers separating the etching layers and the cut through layers. I also did a test print of one of my panels and recorded the setting. However, the negative spaces weren’t cut through the first time because of the wrong settings.

Fri, Dec 13 HW – Image of completed homework
For homework, I adjusted and recolored some of the shapes in the images to make them more simple and make certain parts of the design pop out more.

Wed, Dec 11 CW – Image of work completed in class
In class today, I worked on my vectors. I was figuring out how to turn the images into greyscale images. I first tried to convert it in Photoshop but found that it would be a complicated process to transform it from a vector to a pixelated image and back to a vector again. Instead, we found that there was a recolor button in illustrator which converted the vector into black and white really quickly and easily.

Week 1
Thur, Dec 5 CW – image of completed homework
For homework, I worked on my piece and checked if everything was connected so pieces don’t fall out when it is printed. I also identified what parts I want to cut out and what parts I want to burn. However, I do have questions regarding the stroke thickness that I am going to ask in class.

The theme of my four panels is the architecture of China. For this panel, I was trying to create a cityscape of Shanghai. The panel features three of the most iconic buildings on the Bund. The flower on the top part of the panel is the flower of the city Shanghai. I think this design will work well with the light shining through the luminary.
