How to Mount it On Wall
Initially, I planned to mount this on the wall in my room. However, my initial plan of using 8 push pins would not have been strong enough, so I drew a new design (with the help of Mr Brodie) that I think would definitely work better. It takes more work and design but it seems to be pretty sturdy.

The Final Product!
11/18/2019: On Reading Day, I realized that the design I had for the hooks would break, if not immediately, over time if any weight was added to the hook. Therefore, after talking a little bit, I decided to add a securing triangular piece beneath the hook that would hold it more securely.

11/12/2019: One thing I realized is that the hooks that I will be creating will not be extremely stable because they are just going to depend on the one little part of the piece to hold up the bags while also staying in place. I am making it 0.42 longer so that it protrudes out the back. However, this means that I need to somehow find a way to put this on my wall so that this can occur. I am also planning on making something I can attach on the back to really secure the piece.
Final Concept Sketches (with precise measurements)

Define Mode: I need to design and fabricate an organizer for my bags which will also hold them, given that there is a time constraint and that I also need to make my organizer strong enough to not break under the weight of the bags. I also plan to make a little shelf in the bottom corner for smaller bags without handles like wallets or makeup bags.

My first idea is a bag holder. To be more specific, I have a good number of bags that I keep from stores like Lululemon after shopping there a few times, and just some bags (purses) in general that has accumulated in numbers over many years. However, they are all over the room, and my mom, sister and dad always tell me to store them somewhere and organize them, or at least take them off the ground. This bag holder would go on my wall next to my desk, and preferably would have little hooks for each one. The bags are relatively light as they currently do not have anything in them. I also want to make it easy for me to just grab one off the wall for whenever I might need to use one. I definitely want to personalize it as well (maybe group by store or just have little embellishments here and there).
Another idea I have is maybe to do another organizer for my own desk this time and make it personal to myself. I was definitely left wanting a desk organizer like the one I made for my sister after I was able to print it and put it together. Maybe I could do an organizer for my jewelry so that I can ensure I will not lose any small pieces.

Finished Product!

I was unable to create the little drawer that would be part of the shelf on the very right due to time constraints, but because of this she can now use that section more for all of her books.

9/30/2019: I showed this to my sister and she said she really liked it which is good. When we tried to put one of her bigger binders in, we realized it could not fit as I tried to make the organizer smaller to fit her small desk, so she thought about it and told me that generally all of her binders are always in her bag, so she didn’t need for me to make it any bigger. Furthermore, she said she didn’t want the organizer to take of any more room than it does currently. She also really liked the divider for her singular or few pieces of paper to prevent curling at the bottom. When I talked about the drawers opening to the side rather than forward, she said it was fine because if there was something directly in front of the organizer it would be harder for her to be able to open the drawer and take something out in comparison to side drawers. A tip she gave me was just to make it aesthetically pleasing, at the very right to finish it to keep the shape the same for consistency, and maybe make the shape of the dividers to match the section dividers(like the things that separate each section of the actual organizer) for aesthetics as well.

9/23/2019: After talking to my sister a little bit more about if she really needed everything I had shown her in my original concept sketch, she said the only things she really needed were: somewhere to hold her miscellaneous stuff (plus glasses) so that she could actually put books there in her drawers instead of on top of her desk, and somewhere for papers, notebooks, binders as well as a little section for reading books from school. I revised my design (a lot) to make it look like this: more aesthetically pleasing I would say as well as neater and more fit for her needs.
Concept Sketches

9/19/2019:
Ideate Mode: One problem I encountered was realizing that some of her binders and/or papers were various sizes, so I am going to make it big enough so it can fit everything. However, given the large stack of papers she has on her desk, the majority of this organizer will be for organizing books, notebooks papers. Also, I realized her desk was already pretty small, but given that this organizer should fit in the corner of her desk, the size would be about the size of a stack of pieces of paper but a little bigger in width. Another issue I encountered was that she uses an extension cord for charging so somehow I have to make it so that the cords can go through the organizer to the extension cord. Here are some sketches that I made that outline the basic idea of what I want each part of the organizer to do.
9/17/2019:
Define Mode: Basically, Tiffany needs an organizer that she can either place on her desk or somewhere beside her desk where she can store all of her papers and binders that she is not using or any extras, as well as a few compartments for stationery things like paper clips or tape. Finally, she likes to snack and drink water while studying, so she needs the last part of the organizer to be able to hold a drink and snack and, while out of the way, they can be easily accessed while studying. Also, if possible, she wants a charging station.
Empathize Mode: Understand your clients’ needs and the context of your challenge.
- What objects or things do you need to organize the most? My papers that are not in binders and my stationery stuff
- What are some habits of yours: organizing or study wise? I usually put the books I don’t need either to one half of my desk or on the ground so I have the other half for homework. Study wise, I always have a couple snacks and water and will generally listen to music. I also usually plug in my phone and my laptop and a lamp so there are a lot of cords to push out of the way. I need a charging station or a cord organizer of some sort too.
- What is the ideal way for you to study? I like to study in an environment where it is quiet and I have an organized, clean area that I feel focused in. I also usually use my laptop for things but generally like to write notes on paper instead of using my laptop.
- Generally, what is always lying around on your desk? Random paper, old binders and books, water, random stationery
- What are some of your organization techniques? Well, my lamp stand has like a couple of compartments that I can stuff some things in. I have a lot of random stuff lying around inside the drawers of my desk that are very miscellaneous and not relevant to my studying.
Industrial Revolution
The First Industrial Revolution was fueled by the fact that you can use steam engines to do all kinds of different things, and the second and third for technology, and now, the Fourth Revolution bringing together biology and the digital age. However, now, we have AI, which we can program do what a human could do, therefore resulting in what (in the video) indicates that we will lose 20,000 jobs to technology by 2020. Despite this fact, technology today is able to do something that can create cures for diseases, make things like self-driving cars possible, but threaten to take over the world as technology becomes more advanced and even going beyond what a human could do. In relation to our class, I think this video shows how using technology we can build things like a cardboard phone stand with simple tools but then realize how in today’s world most people would just use probably a speaker, showing how design has become more advanced in that particular invention as well.
Concept Sketches: Phone Holder
This is the first initial sketches that I came up with after Carina and I talked about what we wanted to do. These sketches show the front view of our cardboard stand, the back (using triangles to hold the stand up), and then our modified idea for the length of the back after we remembered the stand had to hold any type of phone. I put in the measurements after we started to actually prototype the phone stand.

Rules of Prototyping:
- Find the quickest path to experience.
- Doing is the best kind of thinking.
- Use materials that move at the speed of thought to maximize your rate of learning.
I learned that anyone can prototype from this Ted Talk as prototyping is not just something scientists can do; basically anyone can do it, whether he or she is a teacher, an author, etc. Furthermore, I learned that we can use basic objects like clay or a clothes’ hanger to prototype something as complicated and advanced as the Google Glass. This relates to our cardboard phone stand challenge because it’s not as complicated as the Google Glass, but creating a phone stand which is universal and amplifies the sound is not easy–from this, we can start with using basic things to model what each part of the cardboard phone stand will do at the end when we finish with it. Also, it helps with the design challenge because even if we are trying to think of ideas to optimize the phone stand, we have to do something instead of just pondering upon the idea in order to gain progress.
