Short Paragraph Response to Ted-ED Video:

From the video assigned for homework, I learned that prototyping is all about being creative and efficient. Mr. Chi discusses how he was able to do his first prototype in only a day, using materials such as a coat hanger and things bought from a drug store. For his second prototype, which took a measly 45 minutes, Chi used hair bands, a fishing line, a chopstick, a binder clip, a pen, among other common things. With this, Chi segways into his second prototype rule, which is: “Doing is the best kind of thinking”. Chi’s third prototype rule is: “use materials that move at the speed of thought to maximize your rate of learning”. This related to our design challenge because I have now learned a new mindset on how to tackle the challenge. Instead of overcomplicating, I will take on the challenge with the skills and knowledge that I already possess. I will attempt the challenge, and when, or if, things go wrong, I will take a step back and attempt again. Another thing I learned is that the kind of learning we are doing in this class is expansive learning.

  1. Create a list of constraints for the design challenge and post them to your blog site.
  • budget
  • material
  • size of speaker
  • size of the phone stand adjustment
  1. Craft a meaningful actionable problem statement and post it to your blog site.

My client wants a stand to place on the counter of their bathroom while they are performing tasks in the bathroom. The problem of facing your phone on the counter and it getting wet from water splashing from the sink has long bothered my client. Therefore, the compartment where the phone stands will be a couple of inches high from the counter. This compartment will be designed specifically for the newer models of the iPhone, as constraints with material do not allow us to adjust the phone stand to other models. My client also wants a compartment for their speaker to be placed into when they desire music. The size of this compartment can not be adjusted based on different speaker sizes, which is a constraont, so there will be a generic medium sized box shaped compartment.

Possible Problems and Challenges:

  • Jewelry is something personal, it is hard to find something that is catered to your own personal taste.
  • Many want to wear piercings for fashion but are scared of or do not want the permanency that is piercing holes into their ears to wear them.
  • Fashion trends such as piercings go out of date for older people, so making the commitment is much harder and many can not wear piercing because of this.

Define Mode:

Piercings are something that go in and out of style and are currently very popular. But many girls are scared off by piercing due to the fact that they are a life-long commitment, once you pierce your ears, the holes do not go away. And, while piercings are very fashionable when you are 17, once you are older and have a job, multiple holes in your ear are looked down upon. This problem mirrors how people are scared of tattoos due to the fact that they are permanent, but we have come up with the solution of temporary tattoos. Ears cuffs are the perfect solution to this problem. They come on and off easily, but hold enough that they would not come off while you’re going about your day. It allows one to sport piercings and be fashionable, while not having to make that life-long commitment that many are scared of.
