Impressionism:

Research paragraph: The impressionist movement began in 1860 in France and is characterized by the emphasized visual impression of the moment, especially in terms of light and color. Some of the founders of impressionism include Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas, and Claude Monet. Claude Monet was a very important figure because his painting, Impression, Sunrise, was actually what impressionism was named after. Some distinct visual characteristics of impressionism include light colors, soft and visible brush strokes, unblended colors, depiction of light, and unusual visual angles. All of these characteristics add to the “in the moment” style of impressionist painters. They were so inspired by this style that they began to paint outdoors to be able to capture the effects and angle of the light and capture the atmosphere at the time. The main ideas relate to how the painting was made, as a lot of them relate to the optical effects of light and to convey the nature of the present moment. Also, many emotions expressed are calm ones, as the paintings are very casual.

AI generated image

prompt: a painting that seems a little blurry with a water scene with three water Lillies on the water and a small sun, with unblended colors, loose, small, short and visible brush strokes, light and bright colors, oil paints, and a depiction of light and painted in the moment and outdoors

Analysis: The AI I used to generate the photo on the right was Chat GPT. At first I used the image generator in photoshop, but it didn’t give the brush strokes and the overall feeling that I had wanted the painting to convey. The AI captured really well the depiction of light from the sun reflecting on the water, and the unblended colors that give the painting the impressionist look. Chat GPT also gave an image with brush strokes that were very similar to impressionist paintings, like the one on the top by Monet. The short, smooth, and visible brush strokes really give the AI generated painting a key impressionist characteristic that gives it those important and defining looks of impressionism. However, I think the brush strokes could have been a little bit smaller because in the image on the bottom, the brush strokes are really visible, while on the left, you would have to look closely at the painting to see all of those individual brush strokes. I was also a little bit surprised by the color choice of the painting that chat GPT generated. I thought the colors would be a bit more muted and neutral rather than the bolder colors in the AI generated painting. Overall, I was content with the image that was generated.

Pop Art:

Research paragraph: Pop art started in the mid to late 1950s in the United States and the United Kingdom. Some key artists today are Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein. Artists who shaped the movement include Eduardo Paolozzi and Richard Hamilton in Britain, and Larry Rivers, Ray Johnson, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns among others in the United States. Some distinct visual characteristics include irony, satire, repetition, bold colors, bright colors, pop culture influence, playful imagery and techniques. Together these help convey the main ideas of the art being based on the use of images of popular culture, such as advertising or comics, in art to emphasize the kitschy elements of a culture through irony. Because of this, pop art presented a challenge to fine art by including these images.

Andy Warhol. Marilyn Monroe. 1967 (also reference image)

AI generated image

prompt: a painting pop culture influenced of a tiger using bold and bright colors, with playful imagery and techniques

Analysis: I thought the prompt I gave the AI generator in photoshop was a fairly simple prompt, but the AI output was exactly what I wanted. I think it captures the image I had in my head really well and it uses a lot of the bright and bold colors that pop art usually has. I think the position and composition of the tiger that is wrapped in color is very convincing as pop art. It also uses the bright colors along with playful imagery to give this painting some of the defining characteristics of pop art. Even though the two paintings might not look so similar from afar, when you look at them more closely, they are more similar than one would think. They both use bright and bold pinks, yellows, oranges, blues, which I think are common colors in pop art, and both paintings use very playful images, and are both pop culture references. Marilyn Monroe is a major and pretty obvious pop culture reference, but also the tiger could be one, as tigers are in many paintings and movies that could possibly be referenced in the painting. I think a detail that is missing is the kind of comic book look to it like the Marilyn Monroe’s, but I think this smooth look works as well, but it’s just not the same kind of pop art as the Marilyn Monroe painting.

Modernism Art:

Research paragraph: Modernism started in the early 20th century, and it was a broad cultural movement in the United States and England. Some key artists involved include Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Paul Cezanne, and Edouard Manet. The roots of modernism are traced back to Manet because he was the one who first broke from tradition and experimented by depicting scenes of modern life and mimicked the real world by using a different perspective. Some distinct visual characteristics include experimentation on line and color, use of geometric shapes, abstractness, distorted perspectives, and unconventional lines, shapes, colors, and themes. All of these characteristics work together to convey emotion and a new perspective depicting normal life.

Fernand Leger. Mechanical Elements. 1967 (also reference image)

AI generated image

prompt: a painting depicting normal life with geometric shapes, abstract distorted perspectives, and unconventional lines, shapes, colors, and themes with bold vibrant colors and oil paints

Analysis: For this AI generated image, I used photoshop. I think the two images are pretty similar. They both have abstract shapes and give off a similar feeling. I think the AI image generator in photoshop did a good job putting together an image with geometric shapes that depicts normal life. I also think it did a good job incorporating key characteristics of modernism, like distorted perspectives and unconventional lines, as there are both in the image. I think those two key characteristics really help to depict this image as a modernist painting. However, the AI generated image seems to have a brighter pop of color compared to the other one, but when I was researching modernist art, the descriptions of modernist paintings included that it had both bold and bright colors, so it could have just been the artist’s choice. The abstract and unconventional lines and shapes are very convincing in giving the painting that modernist look. It took a bunch of tries to get the prompt exactly how I wanted it, and for photoshop to produce an image that I thought looked like a modernist painting.

I finished constructing the panels into a box and let it dry

  • I had to copy it again and paste it in front and change the fill to none and the stroke to red
  • then I just edited the lines so it only traced the negative space on the panel
  • I also changed, in the second panel, the fact that we can only see the cables of the ski lift instead of seeing only part of the lift because I thought it was a little crowded with the car in the frame too

Wed, Oct 1 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-1

  • in class today I was mostly printing or waiting to print
  • I did a test print, but I forgot to delete some of the lines from the panel so it messed up my print
  • I also saw that the ski poles were too short so it didn’t hold the skier up so I have to fix that
  • I also just finished editing some of the skier

Wed, Oct 1 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-1

  • for homework I finished outlining all the negative space around the skiers
  • Also I finished the negative space outline on all the panels
  • I also had to edit the copy of the skier in the third panel because I copied it and then pasted the copy in front of it and made the fill none and stroke red
  • So I had to make sure it only outlined the negative space and that there were no extra lines

Mon, Sept 29 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-29

  • in class I fixed the position of the skiers poles
  • then I made a copy and pasted it in front and then changed the fill to none and the stroke to red
  • then I edited the lines to make them all connect and only outline the negative space on the panel
  • I also added a continuation of the ski lift to the second frame

Mon, Sep 29 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-29

  • for homework I added the sun in the fourth panel
  • and I outlined the negative space around it
  • I also just cleaned up the whole thing and made it ready to do a test print in class on Monday
  • I also changed the position of the ski pole on the third panel, the one where they are jumping off of the mountain
  • I wanted it to be in a different position than the one on the fourth panel
  • and I feel like they would hold their pole like this when jumping

Thur, Sept 25 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-25

  • in class today I converted all the images to grayscale
  • I edited the lines of the skiers so that they were all connected and so that there were less lines
  • and I edited the lines and colors of the ski lift
  • I made the cables of the ski lift thicker so that when it prints it is thicker lines so it can hold up the ski lift
  • I made there be less colors so that it was a more simple image
  • I edited some of the lines and colors of the mountain to make it more simple
  • I used the pen tool and the shape builder tool to edit the sun so that it doesn’t show behind the mountains

Thur, Sept 25 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-25

for hw I finished my designs for the panels

  • the first one I decided to go with a ski lift
  • for the second I picked a sun setting behind the mountain
  • for the third I put a skier jumping of the mountain
  • for the fourth panel I put the skier on the mountain going down it
  • Also for hw, I traced the negative space on all four panels
  • for the skier because it has so many lines, I just made a copy
  • pasted it in front
  • moved it to a new layer
  • made the fill white and the stroke red
  • and then I traced the border of the panel and just connected it to the lines from the copy I made

Tue, Sept 23 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-23

At the beginning of class I decided to switch my theme again and I chose a skiing theme

  • In the first two panels I put parts of the mountain and a ski lift
  • I also put a sun in the first panel but I might put it in the third panel instead
  • in the third and fourth panels I put a person skiing down the mountain
  • for one of the last two panels I wanted to make the person skiing look like they are jumping
  • then the next panel they would have landed and are just skiing down the mountain

Tue, Sept 23 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-23

for homework I sketched the 4 panels I am going to make. I decided to do the holiday theme because I liked it more than the other ones.

  • For the first panel I drew a christmas tree with presents underneath it
  • for the second one I drew a moon with ghosts in front of it and a jack o lantern underneath it
  • for the third I drew a turkey on someones head with maple tree leaves falling from the sky
  • for the last panel I drew a wreath with flowers on it and an easter bunny

Sat, Sept 20 CW – Image and description of completed homework. – CWDueDate 2025-9-20

Since I wasn’t in class today, for homework, I drew some sketches of what I thought my panels could look like.

  • For fall I thought the light could shine behind the girl and the leaves highlighting them
  • For winter I would do the same, have the light shine behind the snowflakes and the girl playing ice hockey
  • For spring I would focus it behind the tree to highlight that as the centerpiece
  • For summer I would had it nine between the mountains like a sunset

I also drew 4 panels for the holiday theme

  • for christmas the light would shine behind the tree to highlight it
  • for halloween it would be in the background to highlight the moon and jack o lanters
  • for thanksgiving it would light up the background
  • for easter it would be in the background with the sun

Sat, Sept 20 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-20

For the luminary design project, the themes I am thinking about doing are seasons, sports, and holidays.

holidays:

  • Christmas: Christmas tree with ornaments
  • halloween: pumpkins and ghosts and candies
  • thanksgiving: pumpkins, turkey, and leaves falling from the sky
  • easter: a bunny and candy and a cross

seasons

  • fall: someone playing field hockey and dribbling the ball upfield and there could be leaves falling from a tree hanging overhead
  • winter: someone ice skating and shooting a puck into a net with snow falling from the sky
  • spring: there could be some trees with flowers blossoming on them and a bird flying in the sky or a bunny in the grass
  • summer: a lake with mountains in the background. I would want this panel to be like the scenery from my vacation to Europe this past year maybe some hiking or biking scenery too

sports:

  • Ice hockey could be for two panels. 1 of them could be the Pittsburgh penguins logo which is my favorite professional ice hockey team. The other could be the Lawrenceville L with a hockey stick in the background and maybe my number.
  • Field hockey could be another panel with someone dribbling the ball
  • The last one could be like a jersey with my last name and number.

I still haven’t fully decided, but I think I am going to go with the seasons

Thur, Sept 18 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-18

  • in class I did a test print but the lines of the window went through the parrot so I had to go back and fix it
  • The next one I fixed the lines so the parrot was in front and the lines didn’t go through it and that is my final one

Thur, Sept 18 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-18

  • I figured out why the windows didn’t cut in my test print
  • I forgot to trace the negative space on the windows
  • so for hw I just traced them

Mon, Sept 15 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-15

  • I finished editing the lines of the parrot
  • I changed the lines to be lighter
  • I finished tracing the negative space around the parrot
  • I did my first print

  • I just finished fixing and deleting some of the lines on the parrot so that I can print it on Monday

Thur, Sept 11 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-11

  • I changed my image from what I had before to a husky to a parrot
  • I was woking on the lines of the husky and I edited off the legs to fit the frame, but it was too difficult to edit the lines out because there were so many lines
  • Then I changed the image to the parrot
  • I changed the image to grayscale
  • I increased the contrast
  • I outlined the negative space
  • I made the fill white and the stroke .25 and black
  • I worked on editing the lines to try and make them not so close together

Thur, Sept 11 HW – Image and description of completed homework- HWDueDate 2025-9-11

Tue, Sept 9 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-9
