Design Thinking PROCESS GUIDE
- Empathize Mode: Understand your clients’ needs and the context of your design challenge.
- A luminary which embodies the same design on each of its four sides, is perfectly balanced, measured, and even. The orthographic view in Rhino will be made out one side. This side will have the design on it. All of the four sides of the luminary will join together and will also connect to the top of the luminary with tabs and spaces for tabs.
- Define Mode: This is the most important step in the process. Accurately define the RIGHT problem and the constraints. Constraints are the rules or limitations through which design is conceived and created. Then, craft a meaningful and actionable problem statement or “point-of-view.” The POV explicitly expresses the problem you are striving to address
- I want a luminary that lets out enough light to slightly brighten a dark room but which doesn’t have so much white shining through that there’s no design. The design shouldn’t be overly complicated but at the same time not too simple. Right-angle geometric shapes like triangles lines, rectangles, squares, and rhombuses. No curvature. Symmetry is very important. Intricate design made of thin lines in the center and then lines stemming from it on each side to the boarders of the luminary. The luminary will be made out of wood with a fixed size for it’s rectangular sides. 10″ x 5″
- Ideate Mode: Concentrate on idea generation. “Go wide” and brainstorm ideas. Transition from identifying problems to creating solutions for your users.
- Ideas above ^
- Prototype Mode: The iterative generation of artifacts intended to answer questions that get you closer to your final solution. A prototype can be anything that a user can interact with—something a user can experience.
- Test Mode: Solicit feedback about the prototype you have created from your user.• Refine prototypes and solutions.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution Video
The video about the fourth Industrial Revolution left me with mixed feelings as although it sent across messages like being more eco-friendly and being more aware of our actions as a civilization, some of the things that the people were talking about in this video scared me. For example Nita Farahany mentions how when we are able to access people’s thoughts and emotions she wants to create a place where people can think freely. She presents this as a solution to the freedom of speech. It may be just me but I think that this partially resembles 1984. I wouldn’t want to have my thoughts and or emotions stored or processed on some kind of platform. I can do that today freely enough with speech and social media. Creating a platform as suggested by Ms. Farahany is a direct invasion into people’s privacy as it does not appear to have the same terms of consent to information as does traditional social media today. Apart from that, I believe that as we move further into the future design will become more and more important as the amount of thought and effort put into designing an object will directly correlate with the sustainability, effectivity, and longevity of that product when put into action, be it an electrical grid, a transportation system, or a school.

From the video I learned that you don’t need months or years to realize an idea but really a couple of hours are all that is necessary. It’s also not necessary to make a perfect design on the very first try, and a prototype, even if distant from the finished product is sufficient to get the process started. This video is relevant to the design challenge because it emphasizes the importance of doing instead of just thinking. “Doing is the best kind of thinking”. This motto will be critical to the design process of the challenge as I will attempt to put my ideas into motion in the Rhino software before I approve or discard of them as the result of the realization of those ideas might prove completely different from the expected result.
