Tom Chi’s “Rapid prototyping Google Glass” Paragraph Response HW

One important takeaway I got from the video was that prototyping should be a fast. When first hearing prototyping, people often think that this process should take a few days however in reality, it takes about 45 mins to 1 day. Prototypes are also very simple with very few details; they are not supposed to be perfect. Instead, a prototype should displays some of its strengths as well as things that can be improved. Something that really surprised me was that using the most basic and random materials when prototyping is much more effective than a fully polished prototype since those materials allow you to move at the speed of thought which then maximizes the rate of learning. Lastly, I learned that “Doing” is the best type of thinking. By actually doing a task, you are allowing more expansive learning which is extremely important when prototyping and finding ways to improve your product. In relation to the video, I believe that in our design challenge, we need to make sure that our prototypes are quick and simple, but will allow us to identify whats working and what needs to be improved on, therefore allowing us to push our thinking in making our design better.

List of Constraints

  • The cellphone stand cannot block the charging port, headphone jack, speaker, home button, volume buttons, flashlight, or camera
  • The stand has to be easily removable
  • The materials and tools that are used are limited
  • The stand must have a manageable weight (cannot be too heavy)
  • Time
  • The size of the stand should be adaptable to any phone
  • The stand should be able to hold the phone whether it is landscape or portrait

Actionable Problem Statement

My client wants a stand that will allow her to put her phone down when does not want to hold it. The stand should be able to hold the phone steadily and provide protection whether the phone has a case or not. The stand should not block any main features such as the charging port, headphone jack, speaker, volume controls, flashlight, and camera. In addition to that, the stand must be flexible and should be able to adapt to any position the client prefers whether it be horizontally or vertically. The stand should also be portable if the client wants to move the holder to different places and should have a strong grip, allowing the stand to hold any phone tightly.

Response to “What is the Fourth Industrial Revolution?” Video HW 12/22/20

After watching the video, I learned that the Fourth Revolution was industrialization that included the practice of manufacturing with the use of modern technology. This new introduction to technology has been affecting our world largely as it is helping create more resources for people, creating a more technological world. One thing I found extremely interesting was the fact that we actually already have all of the technology but are unable to implement it such as clean water, clean energy, and protecting the environment from plastics. The video also reiterated the fact that digital technology can essentially enhance our lives for the better. This video relates to the Tech Design class because we are learning how to design new technologies that can make someone’s life better and also how to use existing technologies to solve world problems.

LUMINARY PROJECT:

Define Mode:

Actionable Problem Statement: My client, which for this project is myself, wants a Luminary with an aesthetic concept between all four sides. This luminary should be able to stand on its own and all pieces should be even and lined up properly.

Constraints:

  • Size of luminary (important since pieces need to fit in envelope to be shipped)
  • Materials available

Side one (Fire)

1/28/21 HW

Fire and Water panels finished
Re-did my panels to add a continuous visual element and made them all symmetrical

2/1/20 HW

Worked on Earth Panel…having some trouble extruding

2/8/21 HW

Was able to finish the design and extrusion for 3/4 panels. Need to finish and extrude last panel

2/9/21

Was able to finish all 4 panels as well as extrude them

2/16/21 HW

Finished assembling lamp extrusions as well as worked on design for light holder
Ended up changing light holder design

2/17/21 HW

I made a more complex design and fixed the dimensions of the light holder
