Week 9

In class today, i worked on and completed the drawer for my desktop organizer. Now I am completely finished with the model and can continue to add images using illustrator and print out the pieces on cardboard for the prototype next class

For homework today, I spent my time making a drawer for my desktop organizer. This took quite a while and I am almost finished with it. Tomorrow I will finish up the drawer and hopefully start printing my prototype. While I am waiting to use the printer I will and more vector images to my desktop organizer on adobe illustrator

In class, I touched up my organizer a little bit and finished the 3D fusion model for it. Then I went in all the sketches and checked to make sure all components had sketches, so I added some sketches for the components that only had bodies. After I saved all the sketches as DXF files so I was able to insert them into illustrator and print out the pieces later. After I tried playing around with illustrator and adding images to the right side of my desktop organizer. I was having a little bit of trouble using it so I also watched a video and did some searches on how to use certain tools. I will hope to finish all my images soon.

For homework, I remade and completed the book divider with all the proper joinery. I also remade the bottom joints on the bottom of the back side sketch. Then I subtracted the joints from the back piece to the bottom and the book divider

For homework I touched up and subtracted the joints for all the parts. I am almost finished with the model, and I worked on creating the joinery for the 2 pencil dividers which was a bit tricky. This is what I will continue working on in class and hopefully finish

Week 8

In class, I re made the book divider piece and used the combine tool on my other parts to subtract the joints. This took a little while because there were some complications but it worked in the end.

For homework, I remade certain shelves so I could get all the holes in the dividers in the right spot by jointing the pieces. Finally after I got that to work I combined them again so there was no mistake.

In class today, I created a new back for my organizer and continued creating joinery.

Today for homework I made new components for each of the shelves and to make them extruded them from the back, making sure all sides went completely through the sides. I also finished the majority of the joinery for the shelves and sides, including subtracting it so the holes show up through the sides. After, I re made the pencil dividers which create 2 compartments at the top.

Week 7

In class, I worked on and completed the sketch of the back side because I made a new project. Additionally, I also moved a few parts of my old project like the left, middle, and right dividers

Because I created a new project where I copied the sides and put those pieces in the new project, I started working on the back sketch, so I could extrude certain parts. However I rand into a complication where I was unable to select a certain enclosed figure, I will try and fix this in class and over the weekend

In class, I worked continued to work on the joinery as well as extruding and subtracting some parts. After that I started to work on my project with Mr. Brodie for a little while and we ended up creating a new project.

Today for homework I ended up creating the joinery for the middle divider and ended up extruding that through the back and bottom pieces. I also as extruded the shelves through that divider for when i create the joinery for the shelves. Then I ended up making the joinery for the divider on the right side which is used to rest books. However when I attempted to extrude each part the whole side got selected and I have ran into this problem a couple times(with the shelves). This is something I will work on with Mr. Brodie tomorrow in consultation.

Today in class, I spent some time making the joinery for the bottom and sides of the desktop organizer. I also started to do it for the top shelf but I ran into a problem with the sketch. For homework I am planning to fix up some of the sketches and extrusions as well as making the actual joinery.

Today for homework, I worked on creating the pieces for my desktop organizer in my new project. I extruded parts laid out on the backside to create the bottom, the sides, the shelves, and dividers. I also extruded the sides of all parts to make sure this time that everything was going through the sides, back, and bottom parts. Then I began to work on the joinery with Mr. Brodie, however during the process of extruding certain parts to create the joinery we had trouble selecting certain parts, I learned that the cause of this problem was a specific sketch being buried inside an extrusion. This is a problem I will work on fixing for next class

Week 6

In class, I noticed that I ran into extrusion problems with my old design so I created a new project and created new parts referencing off my old design. I kept my sketch of the back and copied it into the new project because it had the joinery for each part and I created the bottom and started to make the curvature using the spline tool for the side piece

For homework, I continued to edit the dimensions of my desktop organizer. I noticed not all the faces of the pieces were flush with the backside and bottom components so I tried to fix that. I also used the align tool to edit the sketch of the backside. I also re extruded some of the parts including the the right side of the organizer.

In class today I spent a lot of time making sketches for the joinery of the desktop organizer and fixing up dimensions. I will finish all this joinery and hopefully the whole model by next class.

Week 5

In class, I worked on fixing up and adjusting the sizes of certain parts of the desktop organizer. I also played around with adobe illustrator where we learned how to edit images, for example cutting out or editing the back round of a photo.

I spent the beginning of class learning how to use the software adobe illustrator. I learned that we can use it to make personalized images on the desktop organizer by moving the fusion DXF file to illustrator. I also spent some time in class creating the joinery for the sides of the dektop organizer, the sketches had a few problems so It took me a while to fix them up. I will hope to finish all the joinery and maybe start cutting it out for homework

For homework I had some problems with my desktop organizer so I ended up extruding the sides through the back and doing that for several other pieces. I also recieved help creating the compartments from Mr. Brodie in consultation period.

Week 4

Today in class I continued to work on the shelves of the desktop organizer. I ran into a couple problems so I had to edit the sketches of them quite a few times. I also had some help from Mr. Brodie with laying out the joinery. I had also noticed that prior the shelves did not go through the whole wall , so I edited those and started to cute out the joinery.

Today for homework I spent a lot of time making the shelves for the organizer. I also made a small divider on the write side to make 2 separate compartments. I was having some trouble attaching the shelves and it took me a while to joint them to the back face.

Today in class I started to model the desktop organizer on fusion. So far I have made the two sides, the base, the backside, a large divider, and a small divider. I used the fillet command many times for each of the pieces. I also spent quite a bit of time working on and modifying the sides and the large divider because originally the backsides had a fillet but it should not have, so I had to edit the sketches a couple times so the pieces would joint into the back. I also worked with Mr. Brodie a little bit for help with creating my sketches on the right plane. For homework I will finish all the pieces and hopefully start cutting out joinery.

Today for homework I visited my friend’s room and took some exact measurements of her desk to gather more information about the size of the desktop organizer. I also ended up making a rough draft of the desktop organizer and brainstormed some of the personal designs that I will incorporate in the model. I also drew up the measurements for all of my main pieces so I can start modeling on fusion tomorrow in class.

Today I was absent from class due to sickness, however I drafted a problem statement and defined constraints for my friend’s desktop organizer.

Constraints:

  1. Space: The organizer must be designed to fit her medium-sized desk without taking up too much room.
  2. Accessibility: All daily essentials (pens, notebooks, phone) need to be easy to access and organized in a way that minimizes clutter.
  3. Function: The organizer should have dedicated spaces for writing tools, books, gadgets (phone, headphones), and storage for miscellaneous items.
  4. Aesthetic: The design should reflect my friend’s modern and simple preferences, with touches of her sports interests.
  5. Material: The materials must be durable and feel of higher quality, avoiding the “cheap” feel of her current cups and boxes.

Problem Statement:

Lily’s current desk setup is inefficient, leading to clutter and frustration in daily tasks such as finding and using pens, books, and gadgets. She lacks a cohesive, functional organizer that aligns with her design preferences and provides easy access to her essential items. My goal is to create a customized desktop organizer that will streamline her desk, reducing clutter, and ensuring that her frequently used items are within arm’s reach. The design will incorporate her aesthetic preferences, improve efficiency, and reflect her personal style, with dedicated spaces for pens, gadgets, books, and small personal items.

Today for homework, I interviewed my friend and asked her my 8 questions so I could gather more information about her desk and her preferences for the desk organizer I will make her. I also drew 2 more sketches for the organizer, one of the sketches having dimensions from which I measured, now I have, 4 total sketch ideas.

Week 3

Thu, Apr 3  CW- image of work completed in class

Today in class, I made a couple last touches to my phone model. For example I made a screen using the Decal tool for my phone to make it look as realistic as possible. Finally I used the joint command to joint my phone to the stand. Then, I read “Using Interviews in Design Thinking for Innovation” to understand how I will come up with an idea for the desktop organizer. I have picked a friend and wrote eight questions I want them to answer so I can start making a rough draft and modeling the organizer. After writing down some questions I began to research some ideas to reference off of. Then, I began to sketch 2 out of the 4 ideas that I though were well put together and incorporated some of my own ideas/details into my sketches, for homework I will ask my friend the questions and finish the other 2 sketches.

Thu, Apr 3  HW – image of completed homework

For homework tonight, I continued to work on my phone model. I added the ringer switch and the volume buttons on the left while adding the on/off button on the right. I used the fillet command multiple times throughout modeling my phone especially for the buttons and the designs on back. I also adjusted the camera lenses by adding more circles in the already existing ones. To make my phone look more realistic, I used the fillet command to round the edges of the phone so it would not be as sharp and brick like. Finally, I learned how to use the appearance tool, which allowed me to change the colors of bodies, components, and faces. I thought this tool was pretty cool because after applying the right colors to my model it looked exactly like the real thing. Additionally I tried to find a screen/wallpaper for the front part of the phone, however the image kept glitching through the model. I hope to fix this in class tomorrow and joint my phone to my phone stand.

Today in class, I made minor changes to the components of my phone stand. I used the fillet command to round the edges so they are not as sharp. I also created two holes an extruded them backwards, additionally I learned how to find different types of screws, so I added screws to each side of the hinge caps. That is the completed model of my Phone Stand! Then, I started to add some details to my iPhone model like the pocket holder and the card, for homework I will continue to work on these details for he phone design.

Today, for homework I completed my phone stand. I I finished the sketch and extruded holder and added circles that wrap around the top part of the base, therefore creating the hinge. I also worked on making hinge caps to make the top for sturdy and hold the pieces together. I also added my phone to the project so I could make sure it would rest comfortably on the stand. Then, I made some minor changes like changing the size of the rest plate and adding a hook to it so the phone could be more enclosed. Throughout next week I want to add screws for the hinge and work on the aesthetic of the phone stand.

Week 2

Today, I class I continued to work on my phone holder. I started to make the back and and the bottom. However, I decided to take a different approach and reference the holder off the base of the phone stand so It would be easier to create the hinge.

Today for homework I added circles to the top part of my base so the actual phone holder and hang on that and rotate. Then I started to make the small part of the phone holder including the part where the phone rests and a bottom piece under that. My hope is to finish up the phone holder and start assembling it.

Today in class, I altered my design a little bit. I have decided to make stand, with the hinge on the top and the actual holder on the opposite side. First I completed the base/stand and then I partially completed the holder for the phone, and I will continue that for homework

Today for homework, I started working on the second component to my phone stand, which was the arm hinge. I created a triangle with certain angle measurements and made a hole to create the hinge using the cut tool.

Today in class, I came up with what my problem statement was for my phone stand project, Problem Statement: I need to design a phone stand for my specific phone made of metal with a hinge so you can change the angle view. I also started working on sketch designs for my model phone stand. I am going to come up with 4 ideas, so far in class I have completed 3 and will finish the last one for homework.

Today in class I worked on designing a model of my phone using fusion 360. I used skills I have learned in the last term to create this such as adding shapes, dimensions, using the project as well as the fillet command
