Part 1: Research paragraphs with reference images

Surrealism:

It emerged in the 1920s after World War 1 used to reflect hidden desires and ideas through juxtaposition and unexpected images. The movement leader was André Breton, who was backed by Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Frida Kahlo. This movement was used to show hidden dreams and explore psychological states of mind. This idea helped show the unconscious mind and dreams that held a deeper meaning than the real and rational world actually showed. It went past just painting and drawing, shaping literature and film, merging dreams with the reality of the world through human imagination and thought. It had a global impact that continues to influence art and culture to this day.

Impressionism:

It was born in France in the 1870s. It broke away from traditional realism to capture moments of natural light. Artists like Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Berthe Morisot painted scenes of life outdoors. They used short brush strokes and unmixed colors to create a sense of spontaneity to observe changing light and atmosphere throughout their images. It was used to capture movements of everyday life through different perspectives of life. This movement was characterized by visual brush strokes and open competition. Artists focused on how the light affected landscapes and scenes, showing perception. They aimed to express the feeling of the moment using the new idea of Impressionism.

Cubism:

It was founded in Paris around 1907, it was an art movement introduced by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Artists used this to break away from years of tradition and perspective. Cubism was the idea of breaking 3D objects into geometric shapes to view them from different viewpoints and perspectives. The colors were usually dull in order to focus on form instead of emotion. It was broken into two separate phases: Analytic Cubism, which used dull colors to represent form over emotion, and Synthetic Cubism, which introduced brighter colors and simpler shapes. Instead of showing singular objects by themselves, they overlapped images to reveal modern perception. This was revolutionary because it challenged Renaissance perspectives and expressed the complexity of perception in the modern age.

Part 2: Final AI prompts and generated images

Surrealism:

Create a surrealism image based off A dream desert with melting clocks and floating objects, with a deep blue sky. Realistic oil painting with smooth texture, shadows, and surreal contrast. Make it show hidden dreams and explore psychological states of mind inspired by Dalí and Magritte.

Impressionism:

Create an impressionism image based off a riverside sunset with people walking along the river. Painted with visible brush strokes and soft tones of blue, yellow, and orange. Capture the changing of light and the reflection of water. To capture different perspectives of life inspired by Monet and Renoir.

Cubism:

Create a cubism image based off the portrait of a football player in motion on a field, made of geometric shapes of overlapping images of planes and earth tones – brown, gray, and blue to focus on form instead of emotion. Make the character visible but dont change the tones and colors of the image. Use overlapped images to reveal modern perception inspired by Picasso and Braque.

Part 3: Side-by-side comparison and analysis

Surrealism:

The AI I used was ChatGPT. It did a amazing job capturing all the key traits of surrealism, such as dreamlike imagery and juxtaposition, showing hidden dreams and exploring psychological states of mind. The melting clock and floating apple represent the mind, the illogical images and the unconscious mind used by Salvador Dalí and René Magritte represent key forms of surrealism. The AI’s represented the physiological meaning of landscape using empty space to represent isolationism. The AI’s image is missing the complex symbolism we see in the other image that gives surrealism its psychological impact. It feels slightly literal instead of dreamlike and or metaphorical. As well as the AI did not use the images to build surrealism off of eachother but instead created different surrealism images throughout that do not connect with each other, not fully showing juxtaposition. Surrealism depends on subconscious meaning, meaning something AI can replicate visually but not completely understand.

Impressionism:

The AI I used was ChatGPT. It captured the main ideas of impressionism through its light, color, and atmosphere. The orange and blue tones of the riverside help represent the beauty of the sunset, piggybacking off the way artists like Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir would paint the shifting of natural light in order to show Impressionism. The loose and visible brush strokes plus the diffused lighting, do an amazing job at showing impressionism through the AI-created image. The AI had some mistakes in making the brush strokes too rigid instead of smooth visible strokes, lacking the texture of oil painting, creating a much more digital look instead of a polished look. Other than that, the AI did a great job creating an image of impressionism through its major traits of light shifting, revealing emotional power. The AI did a good job matching the calm and emotional quality of light rather than a precise depiction of life.

Cubism:

The AI I used was ChatGPT, and it successfully captured revealing traits of cubism. The AI uses geometric planes and shapes that overlap and intersect, creating fragmented space. It used muted earth tones like brown, gray, and blue to keep the focus on structure and form instead of emotion. The AI’s drawing missed stylistic subtleties that are seen in Picasso’s “Woman with a Cup” which balances abstraction and recognizability. The AI focused more on symmetry, taking away from textural depth, which makes cubism dynamic. The AI did a great job by not showing singular objects by itself, but instead overlapped images to reveal modern perception. One thing the AI did badly was that it did not fully overlap images, but made geometric shapes connect across the entire image to form an image. This takes away a key aspect of cubism, which is overlapping. This was revolutionary because it challenged Renaissance perspectives and expressed the complexity of perception in the modern age.

This is my final work for the AI Art History Challenge.

For homework, I worked on my last side-by-side comparison. In class tomorrow, I need to add words to my other side-by-side comparisons because they do not have 150 words. Lastly, I am going to add all my work for the final submission to one blog page.

Thur, Nov 6 CW – image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-11-6

In class I finished cutting the excess background film off my last two panels. Once I did that added wood glue to all the panels. Mr. Brodie and I worked together to align all the panels together and put clamps and rubber bands on it to hold it together while it dried. I then Added the magnet to the bottom piece and glued it in using clamps to make sure it stays in place. I am now completely done with my luminary design project. For homework and ongoing classes I will work to complete my AI art history project.

Abstract Expressionism:

It was a post-World War 2 movement in New York in the late 1940s that was used to express intense emotions. These emotions were expressed through gestural brush strokes and large fields of color. It was created by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Franz Kline, and Barnett Newman. This movement influenced the anxiety, trauma and most importantly the aftermath of world war 2. The art work of exaggerated bold brush strokes and spontaneousness showing the artist’s connection to the canvas that expressed his feelings and thoughts about post World War 2 life and experiences. This art expressed individuals’ experiences and universal themes.

Wed, Oct 29 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-29

For Homework, I fixed my lines because some were less than 4 for stroke weight. I also made sure all my lines touch the border or touch something touching the border, so it stays as one piece. I also converted it to an outlined stroke. In class, I need to print out my first 2 panels.

Thur, Oct 23 CW – image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-23

In class, I need to fix each layer because I messed up some of the colors, making lines on the same layer different colors. I went through each layer, changing them all to either 25% 50% or 90% of the grayscale.

Thur, Oct 23 HW – image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-23

For homework I needed to switch all my lines, becuase I copy and pasted them and then reflected them they were all on one layer so I needed to go through one by one and switch the lines to the appropriate layer. I also went through and made sure each layer is touching the boarder and has a connection. In class I need to print out my panels and work on my luminary design project a little bit more.

Tue, Oct 21 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-21

In class I added lines to both the bottom and middle layer because I only had the lines on the top layer. We were not able to print this class so I need to print my other panels next class. I also made sure each layer had a connection to the wall so it doesnt get cut out when laser cutting.

Tue, Oct 21 HW – image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-2

For homework I added symmetrical details to make the design more sophisticated. In class I need to finish printing out my panels and I need to add more designs to my drawing and hopefully complete it soon.

Fri, Oct 17 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-17

In class I added more lines and made overlapping lines on layers with the bottom layer the darkest and thickest and then the top the thinest and lightest. I also made sure all my lines connect to something so they dont fall off. Next class I need to add more lines and print out my panels.

Fri, Oct 17 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-17

For Homework I had to rearrange all the lines I created becuase I put them all on different layers and it would not print out correct. In class tomorrow I need to add more lines to my project aswell as laser cut my next panel.

Wed, Oct 15 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-15

In class I completed most of my second luminary design challenge, I have a few more details I am going to add in for homework. In class on Friday I need to print out my second 2 panels and finish my second luminary design challenge aswell as print it out if I have time. I need to work on my layering and make sure each layer connects to the boarder.

Wed, Oct 15 HW – Image and description of completed homework- HWDueDate 2025-10-15

For homework I began my second luminary project, using the reflection tool and new commands I learned from my first luminary project. In class tomorrow I need to print another one of my panel. While it prints I will work to finish my second luminary project.

Mon, Oct 13 CW – Image and description of completed homework- CWDueDate 2025-10-13

In class I printed out another one of my panels aswell as sanded it and glued it down to the film we put behind it. I also finished the Luminary challenge project. Next class I need to begin my next luminary challenge that will be printed out using the laser cutter.

Mon, Oct 13 HW – Image and description of completed homework- HWDueDate 2025-10-13

For homework the base image and added the circles inside of them. I created the lines that connect the circles. I am confused how to make them go all the way around. In class tomorrow I will keep working on my luminary design challenge and come to consult for help.

Thur, Oct 9 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-9

In class today I printed out my first panel. I glued it down to the film and am letting it dry over night. Next class I need to keep working on my luminary project and print out another panel for my project.

Thur, Oct 9 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-

For homework I made every panel its own artboard. Also I went over all the panels to fix the vector through cut so I dont cut the image off the boarder and instead cut around the image. In class I just need to print and then I am ready to move onto my next project.

Tue, Oct 7 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-7

In class I finished all my panels, I fixed all the vector etching and vector through cuts putting them all on the correct panels. I also changed the gray scales on each image to make it appear more vibrant. Next class I am ready to print out my panels, I could not in class today because there was a long line.

Tue, Oct 7 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-7

For homework I worked on panel 3, I added more flames and used the shape builder tool to make sure there is no overlap of the edge and the flame. The reason I added more flames was to make the image stronger so it does not break off easily from the boarder. I also changed the direction of the rocket ship making it look more pleasing to the eye instead of going straight up and down. In class I need to work on panels 1 and 2.

Sat, Oct 4 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-4

In class today I test printed my project. From this I learned that I need to add more objects on each panel to make the main objects more secure to the panels. For homework I will make the objects touch each wall so that the panels are stronger.

Sat, Oct 4 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-4

For homework I finished all my slides. I just have couple tweaks to perfect it in class, then I am ready to print it and turn it in.

Wed, Oct 1 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-10-1

In class I finished panels 3 and 4 making sure I have vector etching lines on all the necessary things. I also changed the colors of the gray scale to make the image look how I want it to. I am going to test print both of them then finish panels 1 and 2 next class and for homework.

Wed, Oct 1 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-10-1

For homework I fixed my vector through cuts because before it went around each object completely which would cause the image it get fully cut out. I fixed it to make sure each object has at least 2 points of contact with the edge so it is sturdy.

Mon, Sept 29 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-29

I finished all the vector through cuts and vector etching for panel number 4. Next class I am going to test print it and complete panels 2 and 3 and then complete panel number 1 last since it is the most complicated. I used to the pen tool to trace out all the etching for laser cutter to make the image more appealing when printed.

Mon, Sep 29 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-29

For homework I finished all my vector throughcut lines. In class tomorrow I need to finish Vector etchings lines and test print my panels.

Thur, Sept 25 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-25

In class I finished getting my vector images and placing them in the correct panels. I also started the outlines for my vector through cut and vector etching. I have a 2 more images I need to outline before I am ready to test print. For homework I need to finish the outlines and then fixs the shades of gray for each image so they appear how I would like when I use laser cut the panels.

Thur, Sept 25 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-25

For homework I used AI to generate images of the moon the earth and a railing. I then converted them all to grayscale and used the shape builder tool to make each image fit the panel and make the earth go from the 3rd panel to the 4th. In class I need to add little details to each of the panels then start using the pen tool to trace the images.

Tue, Sept 23 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-23

In class I Ai generated the images of Satrun and the Rocket ships. I took the flame from one rocket ship and outline of a different rocket ship and combined them using the shape builder tool. I also used the shape builder tool to make Saturn go from panel 2 to panel 3. Lastly I used the shape builder tool to cut off top of the Rocket ship to make it seem like its flying off. for homework I will need to finish getting on the images onto the set panels so I can start outlining them with the pen tool.

Tue, Sept 23 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-23

For homework I completed my final design drawing and in class I am going to begin working on illustrator.

Sat, Sept 20 CW – Image and description of completed homework. – CWDueDate 2025-9-20

In class I finished my thumbnail. I need to complete my final design for homework and at more detail so there is not as much blank space.

Sat, Sept 20 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-20

For homework I found reference photos for my each panel of our second project.

Thur, Sept 18 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-18

My second Project is Space Themed, I chose to do an Outer Space theme because when I was younger my dream was to be an astronaut. I can integrate this into all four sides making one side an astronaut, one a rocket ship, one a UFO, and one a solar system. I also chose this theme because it will take up a vast majority of the panel instead of just the bottom half which would have happened if I did sports themed. Space represents discovery and exploration which represents the kind of person I am. Lastly I chose this because the astronaut and solar system will create amazing silhouettes when the light shines through them.

Thur, Sept 18 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-18

The homework assigned was to finish and laser cut our Illustrator design, which you can see in CW Sept 15. Therefore, I had no homework since I had already finished it.

Mon, Sept 15 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-15

In class, I finalized the empty space so I could cut out the window from the block of wood. I also changed the contrast to make the image appear better. I printed out the image. As well, after I printed it, Mr. Brodie and I sanded it to lighten up the dark areas to make it look better. I now have a better understanding on how to use the laser cutter and the necessary setting to use it.

Mon, Sept 15 HW – Image and description of completed homework – HWDueDate 2025-9-15

For homework, I came to consult because I forgot how to use the shape builder tool. I used it to remove parts of the bird around the window so the lines do not overlap when printing it out with the laser cutter.

Thur, Sept 11 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-11

I created the line work and printed out my image. I cut out all the empty space and learned how to set the calibrations for the machine to assure the image prints correctly.

Thur, Sept 11 HW – Image and description of completed homework- HWDueDate 2025-9-11

Tue, Sept 9 CW – Image and description of completed homework – CWDueDate 2025-9-9

I learned how to use the text image generator. Practice using the pen tool to trace empty space. Lastly I created a image using image generator put it in the gray scale and change the shades of gray to cause contrast.
