Week 9
Fri, Nov 7 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork
I finished the first side of the box for my lamp.

Fri, Nov 7 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework

I almost completed the design for the first side of my box.
Wed, Nov 5 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork
I continued modeling my lamp by creating the top where my light bulb will go.

Wed, Nov 5 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework

I started my model in fusion by modeling my box and the ring around it.
Mon, Nov 3 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork
I completed my full scale sketch in class and figured out how my light bulb will fit.

Mon, Nov 3 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework

I finalized my design. Instead of just creating a rectangular prism, I am going to have a box inside a circle with a bird on the bottom of the circle. The sides of the box will be simple geometric designs. I also figured out the dimensions for the circle and box so that they perfectly fit with each other.
Week 8
Thur, Oct 30 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork
I continued brainstorming my lamp design by creating another concept sketch. I will probably move to a full size sketch next class.

Thur, Oct 30 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework

I continued to brainstorm ideas for my lamp. Over the summer I visited Morocco and was really intrigued by their lamps. The lamps are made from brass, copper, or iron, and have a lot of intricate geometric patterns. They also have colorful glass panels that cast unique shadows. Using that idea, I sketched some possible designs with reference images.

I finished my Luminary.
Fri, Oct 24 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework
I started on some concept sketches for my lamp project. I will check with Mr. Brodie to see what else I need to do before modeling on Fusion.

Wed, Oct 22 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork

I finished painting all my panels and glued green paper to the back of each one. I will assemble the luminary next class.
Wed, Oct 22 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework
I started on my second step of the lamp project by designing the light bulb for my lamp in Fusion.

Mon, Oct 20 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork

I finished painting my second and third panels and started to paint my fourth. I will finish my fourth panel next class.
Mon, Oct 20 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework
For homework, I started the lamp project by creating my problem statement and gathering some ideas from online for a theme.
Problem Statement:
I am designing and creating a wooden lammmp in the shape of a stick figure that provides focused and adjustable lighting for reading. The challenge is to engineer a prototype of a lamp that is both aesthetic and functional. I aim to create a lamp in a playful, human-like form of a stick figure while maintaining stability, balance, and proper light directrion. The lamp must also have a light bulb incorperated into it, ensure safe electrical wiring, and use sustainable materials.

Here is the image that I took inspiration from. For homework, I will model the light bulb on Fusion and create some concept sketches.
Week 6
Thur, Oct 16 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork
I started to paint my first and second panels. I finished my first panel, and started my second by painting the soccer ball. I will choose three different colors to paint the jerseys.

Thur, Oct 16 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework

I designed the light holder for my luminary and started to 3D print it on my friend’s 3D printer at home. I should have it by class tomorrow to test to see if it fits my luminary.
Tues, Oct 14 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork
During class I figured out how to assemble my luminary. I realized my 3D printed light holder needs to be sanded in the corner. I also test painted my piece and next class I will paint my actual piece. I will most likely paint the soccer ball in each panel and the jerseys in each.

Tues, Oct 14 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework

I finished my third and fourth panel. I will test paint my pieces first, and then I will actually start to paint them. I will also start designing the piece that will hold the light in the luminary.
Week 5
Fri, Oct 10 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork

I finished the line work for my fourth panel. I also started re coloring my fourth panel. I should be able to finish the coloring and through cut layer soon. Hopefully I can print both panels on Sunday.
Fri, Oct 10 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework
I finished cleaning up my line work for panel three. This took quite a long time as there were a lot of duplicate lines and random lines from the AI generated image. I also started on the through cut layer for the third slide. I will need to complete the through cut layer in class and I will be ready to print the third panel.

Wed, Oct 8 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork

I finished my second panel in class.
Wed, Oct 8 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework
I finished the through cut layer for my second panel and started to color grade my third panel as well as clean up the linework for it.

Mon, Oct 6 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork

I cleaned up my second panel, still have some work to do for the through cut. I should be able to print out the second panel during consultation tomorrow.
Mon, Oct 6 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework
I came during Sunday consult and I cleaned up my first panel. I ran one test print to see how the contrast and line work looked. I finished by printing out my first panel of four.

Week 4
Fri, Oct 3 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork
I completed my initial line work for my third and fourth panel. Now, I need to clean everything up and I should be done.

Fri, Oct 3 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework

For homework, I started the line work for my second panel. In class, I am going to test each of my panels. I should be able to clean up and finish my line work very soon. My goal is to finish everything in the next two to three classes.
Tues, Sept 30 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork
During class, I finished my line work for my first panel and started to outline the negative space using the pen tool. I also tested a section of my third panel to see how well the contrast is currently. For homework, I will need to go through each of my panels and make sure I have at max five shades of gray to improve the contrast.

Tues, Sept 30 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework

I came during Sunday consult to test some of my current designs. The first test, I tried the default settings for my image, and the contrast wasn’t great. For the second, I improved the contrast in Illustrator and then tested it again. It turned out much better. For my final test, I used the same settings as the second test, and I also added the linework and through cuts. I want to add some of the through cuts in my images so that it can provide a cool effect when the light shines through.
Week 3
Fri, Sept 26 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork
I edited a bit of my third panel to make the connection with the second better. I started on my fourth panel. I generated the goalie and now I am trying to figure out how to make a net.

Fri, Sept 26 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework

I continued to work on my Luminary Project in Illustrator. For homework, I finished my first draft of the third panel. When I am done with drafts of every panel, I would like to go back and add more detail to the players’ faces and bodies.
Wed, Sept 24 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork
I improved the quality and details of my images by using ChatGPT to help me generate prompts for Illustrator. Next class, I will finish the last two panels.

Wed, Sept 24 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework

For homework, I continued to move my design into illustrator. Instead of using the field to connect the four panels, I will use the ball. I spent most of my time resizing the guy kicking the ball. Then, for the rest of the time, I generated many different variations of two players going for a header. This is the best I got so far, hopefully in class tomorrow, I am able to add details to their faces and jerseys.
Mon, Sept 22 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork
I got my ideas approved and I started to transfer my work to Illustrator. Next class I will look to add all the people and add detail to them to provide contrast.

Mon, Sept 22 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework

I finished my third concept sketch for homework. Instead of connecting the field across all four panels, I decided to connect the ball so that there could be more negative space. Panel 1 shows a guy kicking a ball into Panel 2 with two people contesting a header. Into Panel 3, the guy on the right is shooting while the guy on the left is trying to block him. Finally in Panel 4, the shot passes the out stretched keeper to go in.
Week 2
Fri, Sept 19 CW – Image and Description of Completed Homework

During class I realized that I should probably connect my images. Instead of each panel by itself, I will create one image, with each player being one of my favorite players.
Fri, Sept 19 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework
During class I realized that I had not followed Mr. Brodie’s steps for the Luminary Project. I decided to restart at step one with my theme/concept statement and reference images/thumbnail.
Theme/Concept Statement:
After taking a look at some of the example luminary projects, I figured that my theme should be something that I love or enjoy that I feel is an integral part of my identity. I decided to choose soccer. I have been playing soccer ever since I was four, and now it has become an inseparable part of my life. Playing soccer brings me energy and motivation, and I want to convey that message through this luminary project. Even though I would love to incorporate some of my own photos, I believe that I do not have even high quality images to choose from. Instead, I plan to either use the generative AI tool to help me create some engaging action shots or import media from the internet. I currently plan to have some shots of my favorite professional players on each side, and using the spaces around them as negative space. I believe waking up and seeing these players that I look up to everyday will really motivate me to continue my passions.
Thumbnail Sketches:
I based these off of images online. During the actual project, I plan to use AI to clean up some of the parts of the images. I currently have three players, I am still deciding on who should be the fourth.

Wed, Sept 17 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork

During class, I cut out my project for a second time. This time, I tried to make the person and frame contrast even more and added more line work to highlight different areas.
Wed, Sept 17 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework
Going ahead with my soccer idea, I plan to have one player on each side of the luminary. For homework I mapped out how this would look like by generating images using ChatGPT and refining them on Illustrator.

Week 1
Fri, Sept 12 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork

I went back to my first project and added more line work to provide more contrast. I also changed some fill colors to black and white to provide more contrast too. I need to reprint next class.
Fri, Sept 12 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework
For homework, I started my brainstorm for the Luminary Design Project.
Themes:
1. Soccer
Soccer is important to me because I love to play the sport. I think for each side, I will either have a portrait of my favorite player or action shot, with the person being the positive space, and everything else being the negative space. I am also considering having a image that stretches more than one side, connecting multiple parts of an image across different sides.
2. Pokemon
I really liked watching Pokemon and trading Pokemon cards when I was young. Additionally, my nickname on the soccer team is Squirtle, so I think it would be cool to do a luminary with a Pokemon theme. Each side might have a Pokemon and I might save two sides for a complex Squirtle mural.
Wed, Sept 10 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork

During class I finished my design on illustrator and printed it out using the laser cutter.
Wed, Sept 10 HW – Image and Description of Completed Homework
For homework, I finished my last step which was to take some parts of my image and add a stroke width to them. This allows them to stand out when I try engraving it during class tomorrow.

Mon, Sept 8 CW – Image and Description of Completed Classwork

For our first class, I started our mini project, reviewing how to use the pen tool, then using the AI generator to generate my own design. I also used the pen tool to outline the negative space.
