Rapid prototyping Google Glass – Tom Chi
He introduced the concept that everyone will be able to be the “scientist” without those high tech tools. People are able to produce high-tech themselves through simple materials. Also, he discussed about the comfort when wearing the glasses. Tom Chi pulled out various pictures about previous design that is about these 3D vision glasses. He mentioned that all of those have a major flaw which is all of the glasses are hard to wear for fifteen minutes or more due to the fact that none of them are comfortable. However the google glass he designed are made out of simple materials like clay and paper therefore they would be light and comfortable when wearing, in addition he applied the concept when putting force on the end of the glasses it reduced the weight of the glass therefore the glass would be especially light in weight and easy to be carried.

What is the Fourth Industrial Revolution?
The fourth Revolution is bring together the digital, physical, and biological systems. It also talks about adjusting the world that has been highly polluted. The are people who are trying to fix this broken earth. There are new technology that can supply energy through more environmental healthy ways, however what is hard is to introduce it to the human society. Work is also being brought up, people ask the question of what kind of work would be advocated in the future. The world is open to learning due to the access of internet. Digital technology enabled the connection among different society. In addition, innovations that are beneficial for human health were development through the highly developed technology.

We are planning on to make a smart mirror. We examine the video online that teaches us how to make a smart mirror. We found out that we need a raspberry pi, a monitor and a mirror because the DIY smart mirror is basically put the monitor that is connected to the raspberry pi behind the one way mirror and then display what is on the monitor on to the surface of the mirror. Following are the videos we examined

Janurary 7
After examining the videos we realize the price of the materials are way too high. The total price add up would be up to 150 and this does not incorporate the price of labor that we have put in, in order to make the smart mirror. Therefore I went up to several websites and check if there are materials that have a lower price which would substitute the material used in the project

January-9 ( Feeds backs form the class)
During class everyone shared their project and the average sale price for the project is below 20 dollars. The feed backs we get from the class were concerns relating to the price of our project. The potential danger that the smart mirror would block the fire hazard since it has a wire that connects the monitor to a power source. Also whether is it a reasonable product that everyone would like to buy. Ethan and I discussed about it and found out that the use of it is very limited. It can only be used in the bath room as a futuristic mirror which function similar as our phone. However the price which would be at least a hundred dollars with the lowest price of material and lowest price of labor.
January-13 ( we decide to give up the smart mirror project because it does not seems really realistic)
This is our first design, we think about making a smart mirror however it seems to be a little bit hard for us to make since it contains complicate programming parts also the materials needed to make a DIY smart mirror are far pass our budget. In addition our market price for the product would not be reliable for a student to buy therefore we decide to change our idea.
January-14 (New design)
We tried to look up ideas that would fit our new thinking. We went up different site to get idea that would be valid and realistic in making. Finally we were able to narrow our idea down to a wall mounted shoe holder. This is a design that would help you save a lot of space by holding the shoes on the wall. Also the holder is designed carefully so it will not damage shoes since it is holding it instead of damaging it. The picture below is a product that is available on amazon with a price of 14.99. The wall mounted shoe holder that we plan to make is going to be a innovated version of the shoe holder and it would be sold with a lower price. We would also try to develop a production method that is possible for mass production.

January 16 ( Making a 3D model)
Our wall mounted shoe holders are designed for shoes that are size 10 or 10.5 which is the average size of a normal person’s shoe. we are going to use a mounting tape or a double sided tape at the back of the holder in order to stick it to the wall. This way we will not damage the wall when talking the shoe holder off of the wall. In addition, Everyone from teenagers to adults or even people that is aged up are our potential costumer since wall mounted shoe holder would be a effective tool to save space with a small amount of money and it makes the rooms visually appealing by lining up the shoes neatly on the wall instead of letting it spread all over the ground.

January 20( Innovation on the original design)
My partner Ethan is not here due to sickness, I am working on the paper drawn design and figure out ways I could make it better. I thought about increasing the range of shoe size that could be hold by our shoe holder. If we change the original square shape that holds shoe to a circle we would be able to hold a greater range of shoes and it would be more visually appealing. All we need to do is make the width of the circle between 3 inch and 3.5 inch then the circle would be able to hold a good range of shoe. The disadvantage of this design would be that the shoes could only behold at different position of the shoes.

January 21 ( Making prototype)
We were able to make the prototype. The prototype is designed to be very visual appealing with the “packed” sides and curves on the top of it. After we 3d print the prototype we will put double side tape at the back of the prototype. Our retain price for a shoe holder would be ten dollars, we are trying to think of any other ways that we would be able to decrease the cost of the product. In addition, We tried to put shoes online into our design. Successfully we were able to do that and the size range of the shoes is very ideal.

January 23( Refined prototype)
We come up with a different idea about the current prototype, since the thick design would take a lot of time to 3D print also the price needed to produce one of the shoe holder is higher than what we expected for a normal shoe holder therefore we decide to make a “skinnier” version which will make the sides narrower and it would lower the retail price by a lot.Currently the sale price of the product would be 15 dollars which is the biggest problem that we are concerned about since no one is really going to spend that much on a shoe holder. However, if we were able to lower down the price the potential market for our product would be a lot bigger than previously thought.

January 28 ( Refine)
We were able to 3D print our product, Even though we had the skinnier design we choose to 3D print the thicker one since we got more positive feed back on the thicker product and Ethan and I believe that the thicker one is more visually appealing. We tried on using the shoe that we based the measurement out of, we were able to fit the shoe perfectly up there however when we are trying the shoes for other classmates it did not work as expected due to the fact that different shoe have different design and our product only fit nicely for Ethan’s Adidas ultra boost. Also, the shoe size problem wasn’t really solved since some shoe still pass through the holes facing straightly at the front.Even though there are a lot o flaws but still the good part about our design is that all type of shoe where able to fit facing sideways. A friend of our’s recommended us to make the bottom part of the shoe into a sand glass shape which it becomes narrower from the top to bottom.

January 30 (Final edition)
Based on the propose last class we 3D printed what was proposed. Our latest edition of the final product works out really fine. It was able to hold all shoe size no matter what type it is the reason behind that is because of the shallow part at the lower portion of the shoe holder were able to hold different shoe size but just different at positions of the shoe. Right now we are going to figure our how should we stick the shoe holder to the wall then we will be all set with our Wall Mounted Shoe Holder. Our final sale price would be 9 dollars if we are able to get investment we would be able to make a mold for the product then we could use cheaper materials to build this Wall Mounted Shoe Holder. Therefore, the 9 dollars is the maximum price it can only lower down instead of going up since 9 dollars was the price to 3D print this product and 3D print is one of the most expensive way to produce something.

February 3
We discussed about what we are going to do for the open house. We would display the video on the monitor to give the audience a better understand of how we end up with this refined product. We put in every step of how we designed the project in. In addition, we did some improvement on the blog site and we insert a background music to our video in order to make it more entertaining for the people who is checking out our design.

February 4
We are mainly focused on working on our blog site since we have almost everything done. We just need to upload a few more pictures of our design with actual shoe in it. This would definitely give the viewer a convincing message since the shoe that we put in is the golden size meaning a lot of people share the same shoe size with the shoe we put in.

February 6
Our original plan for the wall mounted shoe holder to stay on the wall is to stick it using double side tape. However we found out the problem behind using the tape. When we take the shoe holder off of the wall, it would rip the paint off of the wall. Therefore we tried to find a solution to the problem. We have two solution right now. One is to open up small holes on the shoe holder and we could hold it on the wall using hooks. Another solution would be substitute the original tape with refined tape that would not ripe off the paint off of the wall. The only problem with this solution is that the price of the wall mounted shoe holder would go up due to the refined tape.

February 13(New design project)
My new design is a table that could be sticked to wall. The first draft of the table would be made out of sticks, hot glue gun and cardboard. However, there are better ways that I can connect the sticks using a 3D connector to connect the stick and substitute better materials in for the sticks so the product can hold heavier things. It would be a perfect product designed for people to stick right above their bed since if people does not have draws next to their bed. It would be a perfect place for the customer to place their phone , their light, and alarm clark since it has three surfaces that could be used to hold things.

February 17
The design challenge would be to invent a connector that would successfully connect all of my sticks since there are only connector possible to connect three joints. However for my project it would need connector that is available to connect more than three stick.

February 18
I would still use the design above however i will design more connector that will help me better connect my sticks together. One of the connector would be available to connect four stick three at the bottom part and one at the top part. the base of a connector that can connect six sticks has been put below. I will work on making it into a 3d shape then i will do more edition on the connector

February 20
This class, Mr.Brodie and I were able to figure out the measures for the pipe that I am going to get and the width of the connector. So based our the measurement Mr.Brodie and I figured out I made a 3d Projection using lines of what I am going to make. There are a lot of lines offset from the center lines since i am trying to find the intersection of the lines. The reason why I am trying to find the intersection of the lines is because I am trying to make a connector therefore finding the intersection and the angles is really important for my project.

February 24
I have the actual 3d projection of my project that i want make all i have to do is to solidify the lines and elaborate on the intersections since I want to do a connector of the sticks. What I am trying to do is a table that is very small and visual appealing but can hold a lot of things. The reason why I want to do this is because some people does not have a draw right next to their bed therefore having a table that can hold a alarm clock, a lamp or phone would be really helpful and since it is hang on the wall it can really save a lot of places.

Feburary 25
What I am doing is just checking whether the pipes are intersection each other on the right angle which is 60 degrees. The next step I am going to do is to cut get rid of the wall like lines that is used to check intersection. Then I will cut the extra parts of the end so that the intersection part is the only part that got leave behind. I would then do more work to make it more stable. Afterwards, since there is a line going up 60 degrees, I will solidify that line and try to make it intersect with the 2d connector i have. This way I would be able to make a connector that can connect four, three, or even nine pipes since all i have to do is solidify the lines and find the intersection of the pipes and then cut it out and work on it to make it more stable.
