Classwork

made frame, cut to size, and glued.

Homework

started work on album cover but couldn’t finish. Chose to remake the beatles cover

Thur, Nov 14 CW – image of work completed in class

added some last paper, glued box together, and filled out classroom experience survey. I don’t think I’ll have enough time to do a last project, but I’ll probably start something for homework.

N/A

Tue, Nov 12  CW – image of work completed in class

Cut paper around dragon body–made it a bit darker there and overall made the body more defined. Currently adding paper to other areas to give depth/draw attention to certain things.

Tue, Nov 12  HW – image of completed homework

no hw–working on cutting paper to dragon shape; cant do at home

Fri, Nov 8 CW – image of work completed in class

Finished cut and assembled lightbox. Going to add paper background to dragon body so the image is clearer/seperate from background.

Fri, Nov 8 HW –  image of completed homework

None–need to finish cut in class

Wed, Nov 6 CW – image of work completed in class

had to make a few connections larger, then started cutting out of wood. Should use new cutter next class to finish b/c laser cutter didn’t cut all the way through.

Wed, Nov 6 HW – image of completed homework

Forgot to upload before but I enlarged a couple joints. Hopefully shouldn’t be an issue since wood is strong, but I also want to minimize burning.

Mon,  Nov 4    CW – image of work completed in class

cut out test print. Size is correct and overall test print works well together. Need to clean up a few areas with messy connections or weak joints, but overall went well. Also glued paper to screen, will cut next class.

Mon, Nov 4  HW – image of completed homework

slightly resized images to hopefully fit lightbox better (changes are so small they are unnoticeable). Other than that didn’t need to change anything.

Thur, Oct 31 CW – image of work completed in class

resized frame but it was slightly too large. Made slight adjustment and need to cut again, but no time (illustrator file loaded on older laser cutter). For HW will resize all frames to new size. Also need to make some lines a bit thicker so don’t break off.

Thur, Oct 31 HW – image of completed homework

Made slight changes like increasing width of dragon leg on first layer and connecting a few free standing things together. Not sure how to connect a few things, but it will hopefully be more clear after a test print. Need to find right dimensions.

Fri, Oct 25 CW – image of work completed in class

Sanded wrap around frame and glued together. One piece snapped while sanding, so had to recut.

Fri, Oct 25 HW – image of completed homework

Resized frames b/c not right size right now, but I’m not sure how big they should be. Need to finish test print to fully see where I need to work on.

Thur, Oct 24 CW – image of work completed in class

Worked on box frame and started test print

Thur, Oct 24 HW – image of completed homework

worked to connect items together so they cut as one piece. Some small things are still free standing, but I think I can figure out how to put those in place later. It should be easier to see what covers what after a test print.

Tue, Oct 22  CW – image of work completed in class

Organized each layer into its frame and smoothed edges. Each frame is on its own layer. Need to work on making sure it prints as one piece, if necessary, or cleaning up unnecessary connecting parts.

Tue, Oct 22  HW – image of completed homework

Worked on setting each layer in frame. Had to isolate color layers and make sure they lined up properly when resized, which took a long time. I’m struggling with connecting the cut into one piece. Right now I’m using darker layers to hide connecting parts, but there is probably a more creative way to connect the drawings together.

Fri, Oct 18 CW – image of work completed in class

Lines wouldn’t work with test print. needed to rework outlines and clean them up, since illustrator wasn’t cutting/joining what I wanted it to. For HW, put each layer into frame and clean up edges.

Fri, Oct 18 HW –  image of completed homework

needed test print before could work further–no hw

Wed, Oct 16 CW – image of work completed in class

Finalized color design where darker colors are going to be more in the front of the picture. Organized everything in a new doc with separate layers for each color, which will eventually be used for the final cut.

Wed, Oct 16 HW – image of completed homework

PSATs tomorrow so only spent ~20 minutes on design. Made some tiny edits and fit the image to the box design. Still a bit confused on how it will be printed/assembled. Some of the colors also don’t feel right so I’ll have to edit those, but I think I’m done with the drawing, at least mostly.

Mon,  Oct 14    CW – image of work completed in class

Worked in woodshop on mandala frames. Didn’t get picture. Learned how to use table saw & the other machine I forget the name of

Mon, Oct 14  HW – image of completed homework

Organized layers, drew pile using vectors, which I think will be needed for the laser cut. Added torch. Not sure what else to add from here. I think the gold pile’s colors might be reversed (light and dark), so I will need to swap that. Other than that, I’m not sure what to add from here. I can add some texture to the top of the cave, but I don’t want to completely fill all the white space.

Thur, Oct 10 CW – image of work completed in class

Continued work on dragon and background. Need to figure out how colors work together in light box. Darker colors will be more in the foreground, which is why I reversed the dragon’s light/dark colors. Need to figure out exactly how it will work on in the final box.

Thur, Oct 10 HW – image of completed homework

Worked on dragon. Took a lot of time to make closed shapes which could be filled. Still working on adding shades of light/depth to the figure. Need to finalize colors as well, but that will be done after everything is drawn

Tue, Oct 8  CW – image of work completed in class

Developed light box sketch in illustrator. Created background cave quickly; spent most time working on sketching dragon and closing small holes so I can color it in. Need to work on colors to make sure I don’t have too many layers. Also need to work on pile of coins

Tue, Oct 8  HW – image of completed homework

Developed sketch more. Used numbers to show shades of color I’ll use in illustrator, with lower numbers being darker. Need to work on dragon design & make pile of gold look like a pile of gold coins

Fri, Oct 4 CW – image of work completed in class

glued mandala together for first half of class. Took a while to clean out excess glue and glue the pins together. Then worked on concept sketches for the light box project. Most likely I’m going to go with a smaug the dragon design, with a dragon sleeping on top of a pile of gold/treasure.

Fri, Oct 4 HW –  image of completed homework

None

Wed, Oct 2 CW – image of work completed in class

Cut out pencil box. Took time since one of the laser cutters wasn’t working properly and would only run for 2 seconds. Also learned to use the sander. Had to fix one of the middle joints since there was a slight design issue that prevented the bottom from fitting, but overall process went well.

Wed, Sept Oct 2 HW – image of completed homework

Redid pencil box design but for wood (0.125 in). Overall was pretty straightforward using offset and trim. No real issues.

Mon, Sept 30  CW – image of work completed in class

Followed rhino pencil box tutorial

Fri, Sept 27 CW – image of work completed in class

Stained design, with darker shades of wood for the lower layers. Also designed a new pin that is slightly larger and has little feet to bring the design off the table/wall.

Fri, Sept 27 HW –  image of completed homework

Finished design–No HW

Wed, Sept 25 CW – image of work completed in class

Spent class cutting out the 3 layers. Cuts didn’t go all the way through and there was some issue with my border, which meant it wasn’t cut out or perfectly square for that matter. Pins fit well and hold the design together. Overall I think it looks good. Need to stain + use bandsaw to make edges clean.

Wed, Sept 25 HW – image of completed homework

Finished design in class–No HW–stains/cutting need to be in class

Mon, Sept 23  CW – image of work completed in class

Worked on mandala design. Made stain board, cleaned up design, and worked on pin idea to add 3D element and tie design together cleanly. Next class need to laser cut the design and fine tune stains.

Mon, Sept 23  HW – image of completed homework

Continued work on mandala. Tried to clean up some of the designs while also maintaining some level of complexity. A few of the thicker lines poke out and disrupt the smoothness of the design, but I’m not sure how to remove them.

Thur, Sept 19 CW – image of work completed in class

Worked on mandala design. Decided to use a squarish symmetrical pattern. I think I may have added too much since it looks a bit chaotic. For HW, I’ll probably delete a few unnecessary things. Trying to balance filling negative space with clarity is difficult. Overall I feel I was able to accomplish a lot this period.

Thur, Sept 19 HW – image of completed homework

Finished tutorial and added some new designs to the different layers. I tried to continue the idea of making the lower layers larger so they could be seen. The blur makes the image seem 3D even in illustrator. I also got a really good understanding of the outline stroke tool and am confident with applying it to my next projects.

Tue, Sept 17  CW – image of work completed in class

Followed tutorial. Need to add last few designs, but should be good to cut as it is. I want to see how the different colors come into play when cutting it out. At about 15 min/ 23 min in video.

Cut worked with 10% speed 100% power 20% freq. Getting more used to using the various mandala tools, although working with “Outline stroke” and pathfinder is still a bit confusing

Tue,, Sept 17  HW – image of completed homework

Followed guide and created mandala. Had some trouble with the ring circle that goes behind the star, but it worked out in the end. I need to get more used to using create stroke outlines.

Sat, Sept 14 CW – image of work completed in class

Class was focused on working with laser cutter. I need to focus on balancing power and speed to make sure the machine cuts all the way through. Also somehow the little hole I created between the A and Z got deleted, so there’s a large blob right before the “w”

Thur, Sept 12  CW – image of work completed in class

Creating the shape with proper boundaries so it would cut out as one piece and fill correctly took a very long time. In the end I was mostly successful, although there is a small little hole I had originally put in to the left of the “w”, where the A and Z interesect.

Thur, Sept 12  HW – image of completed homework

Experimented for ~30 minutes with the design. Coming up with new ideas was challenging and I spent a lot of time remaking certain parts of the design so it would line up well. It was also challenging to make sure the whole sketch would cut out as one piece. I think my favorite design right now is the one to the right off the artboards.

Tues, Sept 10 CW – image of work completed in class

Started my typography design. I did the wavy banner one first, and overall it’s a pretty simple design with a waving banner and my name on each section of the banner. With the extra time, I made another design, repurposing the logo design project we did last year. The design was quite easy to create, but there are a few changes I want to experiment with.
