Surrealism

Today in class, I printed out my final panel. Next class, I will finish my panels by putting the colored paper on the back of the Phillies panel. Then, I will construct my final project.

Week 8

Impressionism 

Impressionism started in France in the 1870s. It was made around Paris as artists fought against the strict rules of painting academically. Key figures such as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, and Edgar Degas, were influenced by urban life, prints, and color theory. The style is recognisable through its loose brushstrokes, high-key color, and focus on natural light. Artists painted when outdoors to capture nature effects. Impressionism was made to express the momentary “impression” of a scene, forming sensory experience over precise detail and celebrating everyday life, and the feeling of a specific moment in time.

Cubism

Cubism started in Paris between 1907 and 1914. It was started mostly by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Their work was influenced by Paul Cézanne’s work on geometric art. Also by non-Western art, such as African masks. Cubism broke from traditional perspective by fracturing forms into geometric objects and showing multiple viewpoints simultaneously. Early Cubism used muted colors and intricate structures, while later Synthetic Cubism introduced brighter colors and collage elements. The movement’s purpose was to rethink how reality is represented, therefore shifting from naturalistic depiction to a more intellectual reconstruction of form. This emphasized structure, perception, and the act of seeing.

SurrealismSurrealism started in the 1920s in France. Growing out of Dada and shaped by the ideas of André Breton, who emphasized the power of dreams and the unconscious. Major artists of the style included Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Max Ernst, and Joan Miró. Surrealist works are characterized by dream-like imagery placed in irrational settings. Lighting and detail can appear photographic even as scenes dont make sense. The movement wanted to bypass thought that was normal and express the crazy mind, combining dream and reality.

For homework, I added corner designs and the latter effect that will look very cool when printed out. I have finished my final multiple-layer pattern project, so in class I will work on printing the last two panels of my previous project so that all my assignments are completed.

Tonight for homework I finished my multiple layer pattern project. I don’t like how it came out so I am going to restart in class. Now that this will be my third one, I think I will be more than able to create a very strong project.

I have finished both of my panels. For my flyers panel I did all white coloring, and for my eagles panel, I did green for the field and white for the writing. For homework I will work on my pattern layer project.

Today in class I printed out my second panel. Im happy with both of my panels so for homework I will work on my third and fourth panel so they are ready to print.

Tonight for homework, I was not able to complete a test print because during consultation the printers were occupied. I added more negative space letters to make my design less basic. This will make my design look a lot better.

Today in class I printed my first panel. Everything was printed perfectly, but there was some burn in the top left that I sanded off. There is a great mix of positive and negative space. Next class I will print my second panel after I square it off for tonights homework.

For homework, I did a test print on my second panel so that I have two test prints done. From the two test prints, I have fixed the little imperfections that the test prints showed me. Next class I will be ready to do a full panel print on my eagles panel.

Today, it was a short class and I did my eagles test print. It looks just how I want it. For homework I will try to do another test print, or I will do work on my other panels.

Tonight for homework, I added all the negative space on the flyers panel. I designed some negative space on the logo so it has a glow effect, but is not fully cut out. I also designed all the letters that have negative space in them so that they don’t look weird when they are printed.

Today I worked on my positive and negative space throughout my first two panels. I shaded the logos and made a lot of negative space on my first eagles panel. For homework I am going to finish both the first two so that I am ready to print and edit next class

I worked on the finial etching, adjusting and simplifying all the lines that might have gave my test print trouble. I came in during consultation to complete a test print, but the printers were occupied. I am planning to do a test print at the start of class so that I can make any further needed adjustments.

Today in class I focused on having my work ready for a test print. I worked on the positive and negative space, along with finial line working. At the start of next class I will be ready for a test print, after completing the homework. I also worked on the strength of the gray scale so that the felids/courts/rinks appear behind the logos.

Tonight for homework I continued to work on my luminary lamp design. I finalized all the line work for the felid/court/rinks. I want to show the felids behind the logo of the team. I will do this by using lower power for the felids and higher power for the logos. This will highlight the logos.

Week 3

Today in class I worked on the line work on the fields/rinks of my panels. I also improved the line work on my logos. For homework I want to focus on creating all line work for the fields and rinks. Once I am done with the line work I will work on the positive and negative space, then do a test print.

Tonight for homework, I worked on the line work of the team logos. I like the way there starting to come out a lot. There is still more detail I need to add so I am going to work on that in class on the 25th. I will also work on scaling the sports balls so I can fit them into my panels.

Today in class I started working on my lamp artwork. I started by creating all my layers and duplicating the panel layout. Then AI generating the sports balls (football, hockey, baseball, and basketball). Then I worked on the sizing and font of the text that will be at the bottom and top of each panel. Then I sized and added photos of the logos that I will be working with in this project. I tried Ai generating the logos so it would save me time, but it is restricted because of copy right issues.

Tonight for homework I selected the strongest idea from my thumbnails and refined the sketch so all four panels connect, along with planing negative space so light can shine through which is written bellow my design. I went with my “City of Brotherly Love” design because I think it came out the best when I was sketching my thumbnails. I unified the piece by drawing connecting lines with sentences across the panels.

Week 2

Today I worked on drafting my luminary lamp design project. My original Idea with surfing was fine but I did not like how it came out. I switched gears to my other hobbies of playing and watching sports. My favorite draft is the bottom right one where I put the four main Philly sports teams together. I think I am going to go with this Idea because it came out the best.

For my luminary lamp design I started my brainstorm process by thinking of hobbies I enjoy doing, the first thing that came to mind was surfing. This will make the designing intriguing because of my love for surfing. I am planning to make a wave pattern around my lamp with a few surfers to incorporate my joy for surfing with my peers. I will use positive and negative space to make this design realistic. I am excited to see what I can come up with to show my mom because she loves my artwork and watching me surf.

Tonight for homework, I finalized my vector etching and thru-cut so that I am ready to print next class. I spent extra time on this homework because I had to leave early from class on the 15th. I will be ready to print on the 18th and I will take my piece from there.

I had to leave class early for my soccer game. I listened to the instructions and demo for the day but did not make any progress on my work because I only had 15 minutes in class.

Tonight, I worked on the thru-cut of my project. I made the thru-cut in the color pink so that when the other layers are turned on, you can differentiate what you are looking at. I made sure to use the least amount of anchor points as possible so that it flows and cuts the best.

Today I developed the line working of my piece. I also edited the grayscale and detail so that when I use the laser cutter, it has no problem showing the amount of detail that I want. The line work had a lot of detail, so next class I am still going to work on simplifying that.

Today, I learned how to use the AI generation fill tool in Illustrator. I created a monkey playing hockey because I enjoy playing hockey and like monkeys. I also set up my Illustrator overview so that I can easily see my layers, generated variations, colors, etc.
