Tech Design Rapid Prototyping Homework 9/17
Some things that I learned from the video about rapid prototyping is that making a prototype is not necessarily about instantly creating a perfect and complete product. When creating a prototype it doesn’t need to be flawless, like in the video when the Google team used chopsticks and hair ties to create an amazing product, your prototype doesn’t have to be seamless or perfect but it does have to give you an idea of how the product will work. Prototyping also allows us to gain insight into the product we are making. As well as showing us what works and what doesn’t in the physical aspects of our design, it also helps us ask the right questions. Some questions that should be asked when prototyping a design are, who will use this product? Will this product be easy and effortless to use? Or will it be bulky, awkward, or more of a hinderance than a help? When asking these questions we can more affectively make the design or we can discover that the design is not helpful or realistic. This relates to our tech design class because we are designing, prototyping, and creating products and we need to know whether or not they will be useful or successful.
Tech Design Homework 9/20
Problem statement – The intent of my design is to create a phone stand that is easy to use, will hold up a phone on a table or desk, but that won’t be big, clunky, and hard to maneuver. A phone stand should be strong and supportive but many consumers may feel that they are too big or difficult to move around. My objective for this product is to fabricate a stand that will satisfy the support and balance needed to hold up a phone as well as satisfying the need to be compact and convenient. I also need to keep in mind the charging port and speakers and I need to ensure that they will not be obstructed.
Possible Constraints – Some constraints that I need to keep in mind are, the materials that I will have access to, the balance of the stand, the size of the phone and the adjustability of the stand, and the desired color of the stand. I need to keep materials in mind so that I don’t make a design that will only succeed with a material that I don’t have or that is too expensive. Balance is important because if the stand is top-heavy then it may fall over, so the base needs to be heavy. Size of the stand is important so the phone can easily slide in and out but won’t fall off the stand. Color is important so I can keep the consumers happy and satisfied. If the color is ugly, no one will want it.

Fourth Industrial Revolution Video Reflection:
What I took away from the video is that the world is in a state of change. With new technology and innovations we are constantly creating and discovering new things through design. Learning the basics of design is really important so that you can move on to create bigger and better things that will solve problems and help the world.

This is my own pencil holder design. I chose the stair like structure (design 2) from the sketches above. I then drew out the 2D information in rhino before extruding and taking the boolean difference of some objects to create this design:

I am printing the main part now and will come in on reading day to print the handle.
