Orthographic Phone Drawing

Response to Tom Chi’s Google Glass:

Throughout the TED talk by Tom Chi, he describes how rapid prototyping has allowed him to create Google Glass where you see an overlay of digital things while still being connected to the world around you. Similar to building a phone stand it takes a notably short amount of time to produce a model for your design, understand the constraints, and comprehend the finished result. For these opening stages of formulation, simple materials can be used, for example, the clay Tom used in his prototype of the Google Glass and the wood we will be using for our phone stand. Comparable to how our class will be building a phone stand through related processes of rapid prototyping, Tom Chi has done the same to generate a real, useful invention.

Actionable Problem Statement:

As the client and creator, I would like to have a stand on my desk that is capable of holding my phone. Preferably it would be best if the phone could lay both horizontally and vertically on the stand. By having a stand on my desk I would hope to charge my phone while also watching videos from it as well. Depending on the position of my head on the bed, the stand would prove useful if the stand is able to rotate vertically on a y-axis, but constraints such as the materials could limit this aspect of the stand.

Industrial Revolution:

Comparable to what we are doing in Tech and Design class of creating something that can provide support in some way is what the original industrial revolution and the upcoming industrial revolutions completed as well. By formulating thoughts and producing objects and items that are capable of helping the world in some way is just like making a phone stand that will help us use our phone. Bringing together physical, digital, and biological technologies allow humans to access things that were never thought to be possible before in our societies. The designs we are generating in class are small creations that help us, however, they give us the information needed to support all people apart of the world to construct growth.

Constraints:

– materials, dimensions of wood, laser cutter

– some kind of cylinder object for rotating numbers in mechanism

– tools (Am I limited to just the laser cutter? Or can I use the 3D printer?)

Ideas:

One idea I would like to create something functional such as a box containing the date and time where I am able to adjust them threw mechanisms on the inside. Another was a design similar to a briefcase that is capable of holding an xbox on the bottom, and a small monitor on the top. As well as that, I thought of also formulating some box that would be able to show the amount of times someone in my family did a chore by rotating a poll with numbers. Lastly, I discussed with my family some things that they want and I figured out that my brother would enjoy some kind of racetrack that could be hanged up on a wall with little cars on it that had the name of the track connecting the all of the wood in cursive. Some kind of car logo would also be very interesting and enjoyable to create for my brother as well. (These last few ideas might just be for the engineering club, or a side project)

Actionable Problem Statement:

I am the client and my goal is to create a functional mechanism that is capable of displaying the date and time. When doing my homework I will not have to look somewhere on my computer for the date and time because it will be right in front of me. The client would like for the mechanism to work well and look aesthetic. The pieces of it should rotate in such a way that allows me to manually change each part of the date by spinning it. There will be cards on the inside that will be displayed after being revolved around an axel. The client would like the theme to be more modern and intricate.
