Week 10

It’s complete! I was able to finish the panels on Saturday and Sunday; the photos above are the final touches as I bound them together with glue.

Reflecting back upon my first design ideas, I’d say I was able to replicate most of what I wanted. I managed to make the gears spin too!

Printed out final panel: will upload image asap.

Thur, Feb 20 HW – image of completed homework

Improved design with a vector etch layer.

Tue, Feb 18 CW – image of work completed in class

In class I created the gears that I will need to finally complete this project. This consists of gears to glue on the side panels, a working gear system, and a front face.

Tue, Feb 18 HW – image of completed homework

Printed three final panels over the weekend, the project is coming together nicely.

Week 9

Fri, Feb 14 CW – Image of work completed in class

In class I had to finish some of the vectoring layers for the final panel. I also had to reconnect the lines and organize my layers again.

Fri, Feb 14 HW – Image of completed homework

Connected the lines together to the panel, the final panel is now complete, awaiting print.

Wed, Feb 12 CW – Image of work ocmpleted in class

GEAR SYSTEM: This is a test to see if the gear system would work. I copied the template off the internet and rearranged it. If successful, it will go on my panel.

This ties back to my original plan design here

Wed, Feb 12 HW – Image of completed homework

Attempting the mechanical gear spinning.

Mon, Feb 10 CW – Image of work completed in class

In class I joined together the panel’s designs to the sides of the wall.

Mon, Feb 10 HW – Image of completed homework

Vector Layer for the last panel; to be finished.

Week 8

Fri, Feb 7 CW – image of work completed in class

Here are the 3d pieces I am printing; they will be rearranged and stacked on top of one another.

Printed out one of the back pieces. I plan to glue on the top piece in this image so it will be 3d.

Fri, Feb 7 HW – image of completed homework

Starting on the 3d aspect of the original plan.

Thur, Feb 5 CW – image of work completed in class

Finished vector layer for this panel.

Wed, Feb 5 HW – image of complted homework

Finished some line work for the panel, the red part is the newly added vector layer.

Week 7

Wed, Jan 29 CW – Image of work completed in class

Finished 4th panel etch, working on vector for 1st and 4th panel, then I will begin to work on the 3d aspect of the design from last class.

Wed, Jan 29 HW – Image of completed homework

Sketched out an inspiration for the final piece.

Mon, Jan 27 CW – Image of work completed in class

I think this will be a very big project, I’m excited to see how it turns out in the end.

Mon, Jan 27 HW – Image of completed homework

Added vector layers

Week 6

Thur, Jan 23 CW – image of work completed in class

I am trying to push the laser cutter to its limits by adding extreme details. The vector etch layer alone is incredibly complex.

New Design + Vector Layer

Larry Pencil Box Final

Finished gluing together!

Tue, Jan 21 HW – image of completed homework

Vector Etch & Vectors

I corrected this for a final print while adding a vector etch for the Lawrenceville school logo.

On January 17, the dog’s ear was cut out. This was due to an incorrect line in the vector layers.

I also added some legs.

Week 5

Fri, Jan 17 CW – image of work completed in class

I finished three pieces today. The vector etching layer, which has incredible details, is attached below. I basically duplicated the etching layer and removed the fill, leaving only the stroke behind.

MY PROJECT & HOMEWORK GOT DELETED BECAUSE OF DIGIEXAM, I FORGOT TO SAVE IT.

Wed, Jan 15 CW – image of work completed in class

I decided to change my approach to this project. I was deeply inspired by abstract art, and I wanted my panel to be abstract and geometric too. I AI generated a couple images referencing a geometric painting. I also added vector lines that will be cut out so the light can shine through.

Wed, Jan 15 HW – image of completed homework

Added a cutout layer for the bottom that will make the panel look like it’s standing with legs

Mon, Jan 13 CW – image of work completed in class

In class, I revisited my luminary panel design. I wanted to do the 7 Wonders of the World with a panel having a wonder.

Mon, Jan 13 HW – image of completed homework

Today I added EXTREME fine details to the vector etching. Basically, what I did was get the individual stroke lines from the etch that created the picture and delete the fill. This left me with only the stroke lines where I deleted ones that didn’t look good and changed it to 0.0001 stroke.

Week 4

Thur, Jan 9 CW – image of work completed in class

Today, I printed the final two pieces of my design. The color is dark because I used the wrong wood; the autofocus was set to 0.125.

Thur, Jan 9 HW – image of completed homework

Today I finished up the final panel in the pencil box.

We can see the individual layers colored. The orange is going to be cut out, the red vector etched, and the rest is etched/vector.

Tue, Jan 7 CW – image of work completed in class

I was going to print out all my pieces to test print them but I had to help some people and everyone was printing, so I couldn’t get to print. For homework I will finalize all my prints and then print tomorrow.

Winter Break no HW

Week 3

Tue, Dec 17 CW – image of work completed in class

Using the design that I did for homework in today’s class, I was able to do more vector etching and tried to cut out more negative space. I did 500 resolution, 70 speed, 80 power for etching for a darker look. Here are the results:

Yeah, we’ll need some slight adjustments regarding the vector etch.

Tue, Dec 17 HW – image of completed homework

Added the designated lines from last class.

Week 2

Fri, Dec 13 CW – Image of work completed in class

For class, I was able to print out the panel completed for homework.

Settings: 500, 50, 70.

Fri, Dec 13 HW – Image of completed homework

For homework: I cleaned up the outlines and added a vector cut like the previous panel. For class tomorrow, I want to try to cut out one of the panels to see the design and what it would look like.

Wed, Dec 11 CW – Image of work completed in class

In class, I finished one of the panel’s cut-throughs. This will provide negative space for my panel, adding depth and making it more intricate.

I further organized the layers into etch and vector.

For next class, I want to finish the design so I can start using the laser cutter.

Work done 12/11

AI PROMPT

“Generate a pug dog using the reference image, make it cartoony”

Wed, Dec 11 HW – Image of completed homework

For homework, I tried to fix some of the lines. This will prevent the laser cutter from cutting overlapping lines.

Mon, Dec 9 CW – Image of work completed in class

In class, we explored utilizing AI to generate reference images that will simplify our design process. We temporarily switched our project from a panel box to a pencil case. I used Larry as a reference image to generate more dog-inspired photos, creating a lovely pattern throughout.

Mon, Dec 9 HW – Image of completed homework

Finished updating photoshop + adobe

Week 1

Thur, Dec 5 CW – image of completed homework

As of December 5th, the following is the completed work done in class.

Design In Class: December 5th
Design in Class 12/5

While continuing with my original design, I had to correct the design’s negative and positive spaces and line widths. By correcting this, the laser cutter could identify which images I wanted etched, cut, etc. In addition, I correctly identified the layers for a more organized look.

Goals for Next Class

  • Finish the P/N Spaces
  • Complete the Phoenix’s design.

Tue, Dec 3 CW – image of work completed in class

My design is heavily inspired by the upcoming Chinese New Year. Since this project is done over the new year, I wanted to make it a theme close to home. I chose several reference images and arranged them into a friendly panel.
