FINAL CLASS REFLECTION:

I ultimately had a great time taking this class. At first I was very nervous during the first two weeks of the class, because I was not really getting the hang of using Rhino. I eventually got the hang of it, and realized it was pretty fun to use. I went from not wanting to come to this class during C period, to being excited for it. Out of all of the projects we have done, I think the final has been my favorite. When I present during the final my sign will not be painted, but will be painted in the future for sure.

Thanks for a great term!

CNC ROUTER:

For my final sign design, I used a CNC Router to create it. This machine can cut into various materials and do many different things. I basically took a piece of wood and with the CNC Router set it to make an indent into the wood. This process was called making a pocket design. I also set the machine for a smaller depth and used a smaller piece to write the sayings on the bottom right hand side of the sign.

The different bits on the machine allowed me to cut into the wood at different depths and lengths. This sign is also all one single piece of wood, unlike some of our other projects this year where we had to connect pieces of our design.

Final Idea…

For my final, I have decided to create a sign for the Island School. I went to the Island School this summer and loved it. My sign is ultimately going to say Island School in large letters, but show different aspects of it too within the sign.

Final Project Ideas:

For my project, I have two initial ideas of doing a water bottle holder or a skateboard. The problem that I would be solving when making the water bottle holder, is a person will be able to carry multiple water bottles without struggling. This water holder can be used for sporting games and practices. Issues I may face is the thickness of the material not being strong enough to hold the water bottles, without the holder breaking. For my skateboard idea, the issue I would be solving is for a student to be able to get around campus faster than walking. With this design I would want to really focus and put an abstract design on the bottom of the board. Overall, these are two initial ideas I had, but will be thinking of more ideas and soon ultimately deciding on one to complete for my final project.

Concept Sketches for Luminary:

In the past, industrial revolutions have been focused around manuel labor and human work. The fourth industrial revolution is based around technology and new design. Klaus Schwab stated, β€œIt doesn’t change what we are doing, but it changes us.” This means that through design and technology we are getting work done that will change our lives. Sharan Burrows, a speaker in the video, discusses how so many people have lost jobs due to technology being advanced enough to do jobs that humans were able to do. Designing a product that is effective is quite difficult, as there are many factors into what makes a well designed product. Relating to our phone speaker design project, we had to go through multiple designs to ultimately to find one that worked. Designing new creations to help make jobs and actions easier is something very difficult, but when done right can help to change the world.

Within the Ted Talk, Tom Chi discusses the design process of google glass. The concept of google glass seems so complex, yet was designed with everyday items which is very unexpected. Tom Chi talks about the time in which it took to create the different trials and designs of google glass and the audience expected it to take much longer than it really did. Within the talk, he also discusses two kinds of learning. One kind being through books and school and the other being Expansive Learning. Expansive learning is essentially going out and trying to expand human knowledge by making something people have not seen. For our design challenge, I think we are going to want to make it fairly simple and expand on it through further testing.
